Hughes Hell Bent On Keeping Crown, Tops Big Field In King of America VI Qualifying

HUMBOLDT, Kan. (March 31) — Opening night of King of America VI presented by Chix Gear saw 106 competitors from seventeen states and two Canadian provinces suited up for battle at the Humboldt Speedway Thursday, and it was a familiar name atop the rankings when the final checkered flag waved.

After 18 qualifying heats and 180 laps of racing, defending King of America winner Jason Hughes stands alone at the top of the points standings heading into Friday’s second round of action.

The 41-year-old from Watts, Okla., blistered the field in his first qualifying heat race, and then followed that up by charging to a runner-up finish from tenth on the starting grid in the sixth heat during the second round of qualifying.

Hughes, a two-time and defending USMTS national champion, is the winningest driver in USMTS history at the Humboldt, Kan., speedplant with 13 career victories in 42 main events staged at ‘The Hummer.’

His last one came here less than two weeks ago during the most recent event for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental where he extended his unbeaten streak here to three straight.

Four markers behind Hughes after Thursday’s contest is Jeremy Payne, whose lone USMTS victory in Humboldt came in August 2012.

Two drivers still searching for their first win–Hunter Marriott and Kyle Strickler-sit third and fourth, respectively, while Zack VanderBeek rides in fifth in search of his third win of 2016 and first ever at Humboldt.

Tanner Mullens is sixth, Don Eischens holds down the seventh spot and Stormy Scott is currently eighth. A four-way tie exists for the ninth position between Darron Fuqua, Rodney Sanders, Jake Gallardo and Johnny Scott.

All 18 heat race winners Thursday night earned $100 with Hughes netting an extra $200 as the overall hard charger of the night.

Thursday’s action was the opening round of the Widow Wax Four-Crown Series presented by MAVTV, which will be part of the nationally televised broadcast later this spring on the popular motorsports network.

Each competitor raced in two heat races from four different starting positions on Thursday, and they’ll do the same thing again here Friday night. Combined passing points for the best three of four heats will determine the lineups forSaturday’s main events with the top 12 in overall points from Thursday and Friday locked into the first six rows ofSaturday’s finale.

Saturday will see the winner of the sixth King of America championship going home with $12,000 while every other starter in Saturday’s main event will pocket at least $1,100.

In addition to the fire-breathing machines of the USMTS, King of America VI presented by Chix Gear also features the Iron Man Challenge for Out-Pace USRA B-Mods. They will run a complete show of heat races and main events each day.

Saturday’s program will feature last-chance races and an “alphabet soup” of main events that will culminate with a stellar starting field for the 100-lap championship race that will start three-wide. Even if a driver has some tough luck during qualifying, he or she still has the chance to climb the ladder of qualifying events on Saturday to earn a spot in the finale.

Brown Takes A Thriller At Night One Frostbuster

Oskaloosa, Iowa (March 30th, 2016) – With the unpredictability of mother nature many wondered if the Southern Iowa Speedway was going to open the Frostbuster Series. Mother Nature never dropped any liquid sunshine at the race track so racing was ran and there was excitement and wild races.

The official car count was 93 cars signed in from 11 different states. States represented was Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Michigan, Arizona, North Carolina, Montana, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.

After a caution forced a restart, Tim Ward led the opening lap of the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds. Kyle Brown grabbed the top spot away from Ward and started to pull away however Kelly Shyrock worked his way from fourth place starting position around Cayden Carter and Ward, Shyrock set his sights on Brown. Brown encounter lap traffic on lap 12 but the lap traffic got so heavy that Shyrock tried to get by Brown. Brown held off Shyrock to take the win. Carter, Arizona’s RC Whitwell and Arizona’s Tim Ward rounded out the top five.

Jay Schmidt and Derrick Agee led the field to the green in the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature, Schmidt grabbed the lead on lap one but Agee worked his way to the top spot on lap two. Agee and Schmidt seemed confortable in those positons when the only race caution came out when Jeremy Swanson spun on the back stretch. This allowed Cayden Carter the opportunity to move to the second position and begin to challenge Agee for the lead. Carter grabbed the lead away from Agee coming to the white flag but Agee was not to be denied as he out dueled Carter the last lap to take the win. Damon Murty moved up nine spots to finish third, Schmidt fell back to fourth and Mike Hughes was fifth.

The IMCA SportMods feature was slowed by a pile up on the front stretch forcing a restart. Kyle Prauner from Nebraska grabbed the top spot and never looked back taking the easy victory ahead Carter VanDenBerg, Brandon Spanjer, Jake McBirnie and Lucas Lamberies.

Nick Ulin took the lead on lap one of the IMCA Hobby Stocks feature however shortly after several cars got together in turn three including Eric Stanton, who took a wild ride, Stanton was able to walk away. Ulin checked out and took the easy win ahead of John Watson, Bobby Greene, Nathan Ballard and Benji Irvine.

The Frostbuster Series moves to the Home of IMCA and the Benton County Speedway for Night two. Hot Laps at 6:45pm and Racing at 7:15pm. Marshalltown Speedway hostsFriday’s and Boone Speedway has Saturday’s.

Next Up for the Southern Iowa Speedway is the Season Opener for Track Points with all five weekly classes, Modifieds, Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts all taking to the monster half mile. Hot Laps at 7pm, Racing at 7:30pm.

Dierks Bentley Reveals Details Surrounding His New Album

Dierks Bentley has revealed details surrounding the release of his forthcoming eighth studio album, Black. The 13-track album will drop on May 27th and will feature collaborations with Maren Morris, Elle King and Trombone Shorty. The album title is a tribute to his wife Cassie whose maiden name is Black.

Under The Radar Music: Junior Brown

This guy looks and sounds like a throwback to the 50s, and is also a guitar monster. Jamieson “Junior” Brown was born in 1952 and began his music career in the 1960s.

In 1985, Brown invented a double-neck guitar. Brown called it the “guit-steel”. When performing, Brown plays the guitar by standing behind it, while it rests on a small music stand. The top neck on the guit-steel is a traditional six-string guitar, while the lower neck is a full-size lap steel guitar for slide playing. Brown has two guit-steels for recording and live work. The original instrument, dubbed “Old Yeller”, has as its standard six-string guitar portion the neck and pickups from Brown’s previous stage guitar, a Fender Bullet.

Next Stop Martinsville Speedway

Next stop Martinsville Speedway  for Sunday’s S-T-P 500, sixth race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series and the first of the season on a short track. Martinsville was the venue for one of the most dramatic moments of 2015 as Matt Kenseth put the brakes on Joey Logano’s three-race post-season winning streak.

Kenseth drove into the back of race leader Logano less than fifty laps from the finish of the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 on November 1st – sending Logano into the wall and to the garage for repairs as the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup began. Kenseth’s car was crippled from earlier contact with Brad Keselowski and he was running many laps down to Logano when they made contact, a retaliatory move on Kenseth’s part after the two had also gotten together two weeks earlier at Kansas Speedway.

Logano started from the pole and led 207 of the 454 laps that were run before Kenseth sent him into the wall and to the bottom of the Chase standings. Kenseth drew a two-race suspension for his actions. Logano had been one of the hottest drivers in the post-season but never recovered, failing to qualify for The Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and finishing sixth in the final standings.

Three Arrests Occurred Over The Past Week In Ottumwa

On Wednesday, Justin A Castro, Age 21 of Ottumwa, IA was cited at 1110 N. Quincy Ave., in Ottumwa for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Wayne Ellsworth, age 42 of Leighton was arrested at teh Wapello County Law Center, on outstanding warrants for theft in the 3rd degree & possession of drug paraphernalia.
And on Tuesday, Tyler Michael Jordan, age 22 of Ottumwa was arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury.
This reminder a criminal charge is merely an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty

Charlie Daniels And Randy Travis To Be Inducted Into The Country Music Hall of Fame

Charlie Daniels, Randy Travis and producer and label owner Fred Foster will become the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016. Daniels, Travis and Foster each hail from North Carolina, which marks the first time since 1985 that all of the inductees come from the same state.
