Iowa Speedway and Knoxville Raceway Will Kick-Off The Lead Up To The Iowa Corn 300 June 22nd

IndyCar Series Drivers to Trade the Racing Capitol of the World for the Sprint Car Capital of the World. Verizon IndyCar Series’ Conor Daly, driver of the No. 18 Jonathan Byrd’s Hospitality car for Dale Coyne Racing and Verizon IndyCar Series’ Max Chilton, driver of the No. 8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing car will enter the  Iowa Corn 300 on July 10th.

Iowa Speedway and Knoxville Raceway will kick-off the lead up to the Iowa Corn 300 with media members racing wheel-to-wheel against Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small and INDYCAR’s brightest young wheelmen at Slideways Karting Center. Sprint car racing star – McKenna Haase – will also be a part of the action. She is the only female driver to win a feature race at Knoxville Raceway. Also taking to the track will be Davey Heskin, Knoxville Raceway 410 driver and 2015 “Most Popular Driver”. Several heats of racing in sprint car style go-karts will take place culminating in a championship race.

Iowa Corn is in its 10th year of partnership with “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet.” The renewed multi-year agreement continues the second longest entitlement sponsorship in INDYCAR racing.

Iowa Speedway serves as a platform to support the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and promote the benefits of renewable fuels grown in America. INDYCAR weekend at Iowa Speedway is a culmination of the nearly 40 years of hard work and dedication necessary to build the corn-based ethanol market and raises awareness about Iowa farmers’ ability to produce corn for their key trades – livestock, ethanol production and exports. The Verizon IndyCar Series is the premier open-wheel racing series in the United States. The 750 horsepower Verizon IndyCar Series cars feature a 2.2-liter, turbocharged, direct injected V-6 engine optimized to run 12,000 RPM and are powered by E85 fuel.

Daly and Chilton will visit central Iowa to promote the Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway July 10 on 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 22nd at the Slideways Karting Center in Knoxville.

The schedule for the visit goes as followed:

10:45 a.m. – Drivers to meet with fans and media (All media coverage is preferred)

11:10 a.m. – First of two 8-lap heat races

11:30 a.m. – Start of the first of two 20-lap mains

Noon – Media Luncheon

12:45 p.m. – Drivers and Small available to media not in attendance earlier

1:10 – Depart for Des Moines

  • Won the Indy Lights race at Iowa Speedway last year
  • Joins Chip Ganassi Racing for his rookie season in Verizon IndyCar Series competition after competing in Indy Lights in 2015
  • Fourth British driver in the last 25 years to move from Formula 1 full-time prior to joining the Verizon IndyCar Series in same capacity

Daly:

  • Son of former INDYCAR and Formula 1 driver Derek Daly
  • Joins Dale Coyne Racing for his first full season in Verizon IndyCar Series competition after climbing both the Mazda Road to Indy and European open-wheel ranks
  • Has tested an F1 car for Force India. Won at Barcelona in GP3 and was the inaugural MRF Challenge Series champion in India

Army Ammunition Plant Site Certified Ready For Development

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad says the state has certified a portion of Iowa Army Ammunition Plant near Burlington as a project-ready industrial development site.

A 153-acre plot of land within the 19,000-acre federally owned military installation has been certified by the Iowa Economic Development Authority through its Iowa Certified Site Program.

It’s the 12th site in Iowa to be certified as project-ready.

Branstad says certifying sites is fast growing trend in the site selection business. To get certified developers work with local officials, utility companies and consultants to ensure the site has no problems and is ready for development.

Congress passed legislation allowing leases on the land for up to 50 years.

On the ammunition plant portion of the property, workers assemble and pack tank and artillery ammunition and missile warheads.

Logano’s Michican Victory Bumps Cup Series Win List To Ten

With Joey Logano’s victory, Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, the list of Sprint Cup Series winners this season grows to ten. If there are seven more drivers who reach Victory Lane over the final eleven regular-season races, then there’ll be one driver with a victory to his credit that will not get a spot on the 2016 Chase Grid – which will include only the sixteen top eligible drivers based primarily on race wins. The lone remaining driver who won last year but is still without a victory in 2016 is Dale Earnhardt Junior.

The Sprint Cup Series is heading into its next-to- last off- weekend of 2016 and will resume competition June 26 thin Sonoma, California. There’s one more weekend off in mid-August before the series has fourteen straight weeks of racing to close NASCAR’s sixty-eighth season.

One More Booster Club Award For Seddon, Coertze

Oskaloosa–The William Penn University Athletics Booster Club has announced the recipients of May’s Player of the Month awards.

Junior men’s track and field athlete Derek Seddon (Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) claimed the Male award, while senior women’s golfer Demi Coertze (Johannesburg, South Africa, Digital Communication) took home the Female honor.  The award is the sixth for Seddon (fourth this year) and the ninth for Coertze (fifth this year).

Seddon competed in three meets (eight events entered), breaking his own school record in the discus to place second at nationals at 188-1.75.  The junior also had three other runner-up finishes and tallied five total top-10 efforts.  He competed in the shot put and hammer at nationals as well.

Over the span of two events (four rounds), Coertze owned a 76.3 stroke average (low score of 74).  She was named to the conference and national all-tournament teams, highlighting her month by finishing sixth at the NAIA Championships.  She posted three rounds in the 70s.

On this day in 1998, George Strait’s “I Just Want to Dance with You” started a three-week stay at the top of the charts. The song was released as the first single for Strait’s eighteenth studio album One Step at a Time. “I Just Want to Dance with You” was his 34th Number One single on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, and his 42nd Number One including all Major Trade charts.

Supervisors Make Primary Results Official

The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors met in special session Tuesday morning for the election result canvassing from last Tuesday’s primary election.

The Supervisors received the final totals from the results from around the county and signed the official paperwork, making last Tuesday’s results official.

The most hotly contested races were on the Republican side for Mahaska County Sheriff and Supervisor. Russ Van Renterghem secured the sheriff nomination with over 49 percent of the vote, while Mark Groenendyk won the nomination for supervisor with just over 56 percent of the vote.

The election results around the state on primary night showed that the number of ballots was lower than anticipated after a record-breaking Iowa Caucus turnout, but Mahaska County still saw a large chunk of registered voters appear at the polls.

Mahaska County saw 3,551 ballots from both sides, with 692 being absentee ballots. 35 absentee ballots were not returned. Just over 24 percent of registered voters in Mahaska County participated in the primary.

That number is well over double of the roughly ten percent of voters that participated in Polk County, where the state capital of Des Moines is located. Primary voter turnout hinges heavily on competitive local races, and Mahaska County surely benefitted in that regard with the sheriff and supervisor races drawing so much local attention.

With the results of the primaries now official and no Democratic candidates running against the Republican winners, Van Renterghem and Groenendyk will await November 8th for the general election. The results will be a formality, as both will begin their tenure on their respective posts at the beginning of 2017.

WPU Receives Numerous Heart Scholar-Athlete Honors

Oskaloosa–The Heart of America Athletic Conference announced its Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2015-2016 year.

William Penn recorded 34 award recipients over 16 conference-sponsored sports, led by four honorees from the volleyball program.

A total of 598 student-athletes from the league’s 14 schools (including provisional members Clarke and Mount Mercy), including a number of student-athletes receiving academic honors in multiple sports.

In order to be eligible for Scholar-Athlete recognition, student-athletes must have earned a 3.40 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), have accumulated a minimum of 60 semester hours (at least five semesters), and attended the nominating institution for at least two semesters prior to being nominated, as well as be a varsity participant on their respective team.
