Cam Signs Open Letter To Congress In An Effort To Stop Gun Violence

Cam is among the nearly 200 artists and music industry executives who have signed Billboard’s open letter to Congress asking for more to be done to stop gun violence. Written in the wake of the recent tragedies in Orlando, the letter calls on Congress to pass legislation that will require a background check for every gun sale and block suspected terrorists from buying guns. The letter also includes signatures from the Dixie Chicks and Rosanne Cash, as well as Big Machine Label Group President Scott Borchetta and Warner Music Nashville CEO John Esposito. Some of the other artists who’ve signed the letter are Paul McCartney, Katy Perry, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Britney Spears and many more.

Osky Softball Stays Hot With Extra Inning Win Over Pella

The Oskaloosa softball team has been on a roll lately, and that roll continued with a hard fought win against archrival Pella on Thursday night.

The Indians have had a long week, as the game with the Lady Dutch was their fourth straight night playing a conference game. After a grueling pitchers’ duel, Osky also got their fourth straight win, 1-0 in 8 innings.

The first seven innings were dominated by both teams’ pitching and defense.

Oskaloosa’s Alexis Groet continued her string of dominant outings by allowing only two hits in the first seven innings of play and walked only two. The big surprise was Pella senior Alexa Dingeman, who matched Groet out-for- out.

Dingeman would strike out Kylee Silliman and Alexis Westercamp twice each on the night. That is notable because Silliman and Westercamp both came in with two strikeouts each on the season.

After seven innings of three-hit ball, however, Pella opted to lift their senior and bring in sophomore Sabrina Tallman. Dingeman pitched eight innings in a victory against Pella Christian on Wednesday night, and with sophomore ace Kinzi Van Wyk on the shelf with an injury, Pella Head Coach Robin Llewellyn decided to pull Dingeman to keep her fresh for the next couple of days.

Oskaloosa would pounce immediately on Tallman, as Anna Jones led off the 8 th with an infield hit, and Aubrey Miller would follow with an RBI double to score Jones from first.

Osky couldn’t add a second run, but that’s all that Alexis Groet and the defense would need.

The biggest defensive play of the game for the Indians came in the bottom of the 8 th as All-State leadoff hitter Sara Tallman came to the plate with one out for the Lady Dutch. On a 3-2 pitch, Tallman roped a ball off the wall in left-center field. As she rounded second and headed for third, left fielder Josie Bunnell got to the ball quickly and fired a strike to Kylee Silliman, who then relayed the ball to third where Devan Welch made the tag for the second out. Groet would induce a groundout on the next batter to end the game.

Oskaloosa moved to 19-3 with the victory and sit in good shape at 8-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Pella fell to 13-11 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

Osky is back in action Friday in Solon against two 5A opponents: Des Moines Lincoln and Iowa City High. After getting the weekend off, Oskaloosa returns to conference action to face #13 Newton on the road before facing Eddyville-Blakesburg- Fremont next Tuesday at home. The Indians wrap up conference play next Wednesday with a home game against Norwalk.

Hot, Dry Conditions Beginning To Stress Iowa, Nebraska Crops

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Crops across Iowa and Nebraska are off to a good start this year but stress is beginning to show in some parts of the region from very hot and mostly dry conditions over the past week.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Monday the leaves are beginning to curl on corn plants across the lower two-thirds of Iowa. The state saw half of the normal rain for the week during its seventh consecutive week of below normal precipitation and the fourth consecutive week with warmer than normal temperatures.

Nebraska also was hotter than normal but some rain helped much of the state except for south-central Nebraska.

Nearly 80 percent of the corn crop in both states is rated good or excellent and soybean emergence also is ahead of schedule.

Randy Travis Honored With Career Achievement Award

Randy Travis was in Nashville on Wednesday (6/22) to accept a special award during the Country Radio Hall of Fame dinner and awards ceremony. During the ceremony, Travis was presented with Country Radio Seminar’s (CRS) 2016 Artist Career Achievement Award, which is given to an artist who has made a significant contribution to the development and promotion of country music and country radio. Josh Turner was also on hand at the event to perform a musical tribute to 2016 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, which included a medley of his biggest hits.

Camping World Truck Series Staging Its First “Stand-Alone” Race Of The Year

The Camping World Truck Series will stage its first “stand-alone” race of the year, Saturday night’s Drivin’ for Linemen 200 at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois. The race kicks off the second half of the regular season. It’s the first year for the elimination-style Chase format to be used in the Truck Series.

There are presently thirteen drivers in the mix for eight berths in the seven-race title series that opens September 24th in Loudon, New Hampshire. Rookie William Byron, two-time series champion Matt Crafton, John Hunter Nemechek and Johnny Sauter have won races this season. Ben Kennedy leads Spencer Gallagher by a mere three points in the battle for the final “playoff” spot with eight races left in the regular season. Prospects are good for those two to take that battle to the track come Saturday night since last year – with Gallagher finishing second and Kennedy seventh.

Deadline Approaches

DES MOINES — July 1 is the deadline to enter the Iowa State Fair Parade and many of the Fair’s competitive events.

The Iowa State Fair invites all community and youth groups, special interest clubs and businesses to join the fun and see how “Nothing Compares to My State Fair” by entering the State Fair parade, Iowa’s largest parade and the kick-off to the 2016 Fair. Applications are available at http://www.iowastatefair.org/participate/parade/ or by contacting Tonya Cook at 515-262-3111 ext. 215 or tcook@iowastatefair.org. No entries will be accepted after July 15.

Entrants in competitive events may enter online or submit their entry by mail. Premium books and entry forms can be accessed at http://www.iowastatefair.org/participate/competition/how-to-enter/.

While most entries are due July 1, deadlines do vary by department. Many departments will accept late entries through July 8 with additional fees.

Daytona To Recognize Medal Of Honor Recipients

Daytona International Speedway will once again salute three recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor during this year’s Coke Zero 400 Weekend Powered by Coca-Cola. One of the honorees served in the Vietnam War and the two others in Afghanistan.

They are: Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell, U.S. Army, Staff Sergeant Ty Carter, U.S. Army,and Captain Florent Groberg, also U.S. Army. This is the eighth consecutive year the Speedway has honored Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.

They’ll be recognized during a special luncheon, will attend drivers meetings, and participate in pre-race ceremonies for both the Subway Firecracker 250 X-FINITY Series race on Friday, July 1st, and the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola Sprint Cup race on Saturday, July 2nd. They’ll also take part in an autograph session in the Sprint FAN ZONE on Saturday before that night’s Cup Series event.

On this day in 1995, Garth Brooks’ The Hits was Certified 6X Platinum for shipments of 6 million copies. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, and Top Country Albums, making it a crossover success.

This was technically Garth’s second best of album,as The Garth Brooks Collection, was released three months earlier exclusively at McDonald’s  to raise money for the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities.

The album is now out of print, as it was a limited time offer. The Hits well over ten million copies before production on the album stopped.

 

Brayton Carter Wins Dave Lowry Memorial At Osky

Oskaloosa, Iowa (June 22nd, 2016) – Wednesday night was the annual Dave Lowry Memorial race sponsored by Monte Motor Parts and Nutz Graphics & Signs. Community 1st Credit Union also sponsored the night as they were handing out many items to drivers and fans in attendance. Even the youngters got to have some fun as they took a couple of laps around the monster half mile with Kids Rides.

Brayton Carter wins the IMCA SportMods for the first time at Osky in 2016 meanwhile Brother Cayden Carter wins again in the IMCA Stock Cars. Zack Vanderbeek (IMCA Modifieds), Dustin Griffiths (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Cody Van Dusen (IMCA Sport Compacts) also take feature wins. The Mississippi Valley Vintage Racing Association was in attendance running an expedition heat race and feature for the Vintage Sprint Cars.

Brad Havel led the first laps of the ten lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature event but Cody VanDusen took the top spot away on lap two. VanDusen saw Brad Havel and Shane Evans on his back bumper after a caution on lap eight for Ryan Havel in turn one. VanDusen was not going to be denied the win as he held off the brigade the final two laps. Evans claimed second, Brad Havel was third, John Gill ran fourth and Ryan Havel was fifth

August Bach and Nick Ulin led the field to the green in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature but by the end of lap one, it was Dustin Griffiths grabbing the top spot. Griffiths saw a familiar racer, Danny Thrasher on his back bumper most of the way but it was Griffiths holding off Thrasher to take his fifth win at Osky in 2016. Thrasher took second, Nick Ulin was third, Scott Shull was fourth and Steve Allen was fifth.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event, it was Zack Vanderbeek, driving one of Nathan Wood’s hot rods, grabbing the early lead. Vanderbeek led until Mike Hughes worked his way up to take the lead away on lap eight. Hughes led until lap 11 when the Orange Crush car of Cayden Carter took the lead away. Carter saw Damon Murty follow to second place and those two went into a very intense battle for the lead meanwhile Zanderbeek and Hughes exited pit side late in the race. Carter held off Murty to win his eighth feature win in a row. Derrick Agee, Louis Lynch and Donnie Pearson rounded out the top five.

Trent Brink led the first lap of the 16 lap KBOE Radio IMCA SportMods feature event but shortly after the caution came out when last week’s winner Austin Paul got caught up with an implement tire in turn two. Matthew Van Gelder took the top spot away on the restart but that was short lived as “Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter grabbed the top spot on lap three. Carter cruised on to take his first at Osky ahead of Brett Lowry, Van Gelder, Curtis VanDerWal and Eric Flander.

Final feature of the night was the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature. Andrew Schroeder wrestled the lead away on lap one from Scott Dickey, Dickey lost second to Zack Vanderbeek on lap three and on lap five the caution came out for Jason Murray taking advesive action heading off turn three. Schroeder had Vanderbeek and Colt Mather on his back bumper on the restart, Mather grabbed secodn before taking the lead away on lap eight. Mather’s time out front was short lived as Vanderbeek took the lead away just before a caution came out on lap 11 for JD Gresham in turn two. Vanderbeek and the field saw the caution come out again on lap 13 for Todd Cooney coming to a stop in turn three. Vanderbeek was not going to be denied as he head on to take his first win at Osky. Cayden Carter got by Colt Mather on the final lap to take second. Dickey came home fourth and Schroeder was fifth.

Next Wednesday Night will be Kelli Steil State Farm Insurance Night at the Southern Iowa Speedway. All five IMCA Classes are on the card with Hot Laps at7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

The following week will be the 21st Annual IMCA Budweiser Stock Car Shootout on Tuesday and Wednesday July 5th and 6th. On Tuesday, Qualifying night for Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts and on Wednesday night last chance qualifying and main events for Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. Modifieds will run a complete show on July 6th. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm both nights of the Shootout.

Little Big Town Will Perform During Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

Little Big Town will perform during the CBS’ broadcast of the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th. LBT joins previously announced performers Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato at the annual show, which will be broadcast live from the Charles River Esplanade in Boston at 8:00 pm on CBS.
