Recent water testing at Lake Red Rock’s North Overlook Beach shows low bacteria levels, and the previous swimming advisory is no longer in effect.
The main body of the lake and Whitebreast Beach also had low bacterial counts.
Sampling at the beaches is performed weekly by the Corps of Engineers through a contract with Iowa State University. Further information on the Corps of Engineers water quality monitoring procedures may be obtained at the Red Rock Visitor Center.
On this day in 2005, Brad Paisley released his fourth album, Time Well Wasted. The album produced three #1 hits with “When I Get Where I’m Going”, “The World”, and “She’s Everything”. The CMA would name Time Well Wasted the 2006 Album of the Year.
Paisley’s album has since gone Double Platinum.
The Old Shoe Football Scrimmage will take place on August 19th with gates opening at 4:30. Admission to watch the game will be one Sports Drink.
The Freshman vs. Junior Varsity game will begin at 5:30 pm, and Varsity will warm up at 6:30 pm with scrimmage starting around 7:15 pm.

Today’s football district is Class 1A District 5 including Pella Christian and Pleasantville.
This district is much like District 4 in that there is going to be a free-for-all for the last playoff spot.
Mount Ayr is at the top, a team that is perennially in the mix in Class A. They went 10-3 last season and lost in the state semifinals. It will be interesting to see how they handle the jump up to Class 1A this year.
After that, Pella Christian and Pleasantville have the two best records returning. Pleasantville went 9-2 last year, losing in the second round, and PC went 7-4, also losing in the second round.
PC will absolutely be in the mix to grab the top spot in this district with returning QB David Kacmarynski and athlete Levi Jungling. The Eagles would be the safest bet to be at the top in this district.
Pleasantville lost a lot of their key playmakers, but still could make some noise in 2016. They’ll have to contend with some adjustments, as they, too, are moving up to Class 1A with Mount Ayr from Class A. Mount Ayr actually was responsible for the only loss that Pleasantville suffered in the regular season last year.
Outside of those teams, Interstate 35 went 5-5 with a first round loss, Des Moines Christian went 4-6 with a first round loss, and no one else made the playoffs.
Woodward-Granger went 4-5, Central Decatur went 3-6, and Woodward Academy went 1-8. All of those teams will have to make big strides if they are going to compete in this district for a playoff spot.
This district, much like District 4, will be unpredictable, but overall, there will be several opportunities for teams to steal wins and position themselves for a playoff berth.
We’ll look at another interesting district tomorrow, as we hop down to Class A and look at District 5, represented by BGM.
When Justin Moore’s new album, Kinda Don’t Care, hit streets on Friday (8/12), it immediately claimed the #1 spot on iTunes’ Top Country Albums chart. The album also found the #2 position on All-Genre iTunes Chart, and that was all before Justin hit the stage on Friday morning for Fox & Friends’ All-American Summer Concert Series in New York City.
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Fire Department is tasked with code enforcement within the city. Residents that may have violations such as scrap, or garbage cans may get a visit from the department.
Neff said that after an initial visit, residents are often given a short time to fix the situation without any penalty. If the situation isn’t remedied in the given time, the situation may be handed over to the city attorney for legal action.
When the fire department receives a complaint, personnel visit the location and document the situation through photographs, and if the occupant isn’t home, a door tag is left describing the reason for the visit.
All the information is entered into their system, and after three days, staff revisits the property, noting any changes that may have taken place.
If there are improvements, staff may continue to allow the resident or occupant to continue correcting the situation. Rental property owners are also notified of the situation.
If no progress is noted, the staff will take follow-up photos and then will prepare documentation for the city attorney.
After the city attorney has all the needed documentation, a municipal infraction is filed with the court, and a hearing date is set.
During the months of April, May, and June, a total of 155 infractions were investigated, with 85.8{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of those being resolved without the city attorney taking any action.

Justin Marks got the best of his thirty-nine X-FINITY Series rivals on Saturday by mastering a soggy circuit and driving to victory at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Marks, widely known as a road racing specialist but making just his twenty-fifth career series start, led a race-high forty-three laps in his Number-42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet – including the final ten, beating pole sitter Sam Hornish Junior to the checkered flag by more than three-and-a-half seconds. Ryan Blaney took third place with Ty Dillon and Justin Allgaier completing the top five. It was a banner day for Chevrolet as the manufacturer grabbed four of the five top finishing positions. Marks started sixteenth in the forty-car field but charged forward at the drop of the green flag. He took his first lead just eleven laps into the race as rain soaked the two-point-two-mile natural road course. It did subside and the track began to dry at the mid-point of the race. But the skies opened up again in the second half, which opened the door for Marks to claim his first career win. Darrell Wallace Junior had the lead on the day’s final restart fourteen laps from the finish but went off the course in the wet conditions, surrendering the top spot to Dillon with Marks in hot pursuit. Dillon slid off the track himself a short time later, giving Marks the opening he needed to reclaim the lead and drive on to victory … Series leader Elliott Sadler started fourth and finished ninth, which was enough for him to stretch his advantage to twenty-five points over second-place Daniel Suarez, who labored to a twenty-third-place finish … Erik Jones was the highest-finishing rookie, coming home in sixth place.
On this day in 2015, Sam Hunt spent the first of six weeks at #1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart with “House Party”. The song was the third single from his debut studio album, Montevallo. “House Party” has since been Certified Platinum by the RIAA.
Jason Aldean will be honored with the Academy of Country Music’s prestigious Triple Crown award during the 10th Annual ACM Honors Ceremony on August 30th. The Triple Crown award is given to artists who have won for New Male/Female Vocalist of the Year, Male/Female Vocalist of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year.
We continue our looks at each of our area football districts at the high school level with a peek at Class 1A District 4.
Sigourney/Keota is the lone area team in this district, and the Savage Cobras have to feel good about their group.
S/K knows the one team they’ll have a hard time beating is a perennial powerhouse, and that’s Iowa City Regina. The Regals went 13-1 last year and again claimed the Class 1A State Championship, their sixth in a row.
With a team like that in the district, the Cobras know it won’t be easy to get to the top. But that second playoff spot is up for grabs, and S/K has the best 2015 record of any of the other teams in the district.
Sigourney/Keota went 6-3 in the regular season before losing at home in the first round of the playoffs to Hudson in a thriller. They do lose big-time players in Peyton Crawford and Blaine Gretter, but could be in a good spot to claim that #2 position in the standings.
They’ll be battling with Highland, who went 4-5 last season and missed the playoffs. S/K knows the Huskies well, having played them the last couple of years in district play. Wilton, a 5-4 team who lost in the first round, is a similar team on paper to Highland, and could pose a threat to S/K’s chance to get that second spot.
The only other team that made the playoffs in this district in 2015 is Columbus Community, and they went 3-6 in the regular season and backed their way into a berth before losing in the first round. Sigourney/Keota has also handled Columbus in district play in previous years.
Louisa-Muscatine and Wapello are new teams for Sigourney/Keota, and both went 3-6 last year, missing the playoffs. L-M played in Class 2A last year and handed Central Lee their only regular season loss in district play. They could be easily forgotten, but they might have the biggest advantage to stake a claim to a playoff spot.
Wapello is cut out of a similar cloth of L-M, just without the signature win from a year ago.
Van Buren rounds out the district, and the Warriors went just 1-8 last year in Class A, and in all likelihood, they will not be a factor in the district race.
There are plenty of variables in this district from top to bottom, but the one known fact is that Regina will be the team to beat. Of the teams chasing them, it will be as unpredictable as any district in our area with who will emerge as the top threat.
We’ll keep in Class 1A for our district tomorrow, which is District 5 involving two successful teams from 2015: Pella Christian and Pleasantville.
