Gonzalez, Boma Collect Weekly Accolades

Oskaloosa–Jamal Boma (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management and Physical Education) and Guadalupe Gonzalez (Jr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) posted two of the best finishes in their respective program’s histories and they were rewarded for those exceptional outings by being named Heart of America Athletic Conference Cross Country Runners of the Week Monday.

Boma, now a two-time winner (back-to-back weeks), finished fourth out of 292 competitors at the Brissman/Lundeen Invitational last Friday.  His time is the eight-fastest 8K in school history and the fastest since 2003.

Gonzalez also earned her second career honor (won once last year) by placing 23rd out of 226 women on the 6K course at 25:17.1.  Her time is the seventh-best ever at WPU (since 2001).

WPU has now claimed three weekly awards this fall (two men, one women)

E.B.F.H.S Marching Band Wins At Pella

The Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Marching Band had a great day in Pella Saturday as they outscored a total of 10 other bands at the Marching Dutch Invitational.  The band placed 1st in class 2A with a score of 66.4 seven points ahead of the closest 2A band.  EBF also won the Outstanding Color Guard Award.

PCM won the Outstanding Drumline Award in class 2A.  Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont outscored the bands from Belle Plaine, PCM, Carlisle, South Tama, North Polk, Knoxville, Williamsburg, Humboldt, Bondurant-Farrar, and Ottumwa.

The E.B.F.H.S. Marching Band has 73 members this year.  The soloists for this year’s show are Teri Jo Lane, Claire Jager, Katie Fisher, Maggie Voyles, Delanee Van Zante, Adlynn Eveland, and Briana Ver Steegh.  The Drum Majors are Claire Jager and Grace Manternach.  The band is directed by Joe Overton, Dezirae Fairchild, and Color Guard instructor Paige Ver Steegh.

This Saturday, the band travels to Urbandale for the Urbandale Marching Invitational Contest.  They perform at 5:30 in class 2A competition.  The band competes at Valleyfest in West Des Moines on October 8th.  On October 15th the band competes at State Marching Band Contest in Pella and then at the Mid-Iowa Band Championships in Ankeny that evening.  As always, friends and supporters of the band are encouraged to attend and lend your vocal support.

Harvick Takes The Bad Boy Off Road 300

Kevin Harvick was masterful on the day’s final restart Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, roaring past race leader Matt Kenseth to claim victory and advance to the next round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.  Harvick started nineteenth and led just eight laps all afternoon.  But after dispatching Kenseth on the decisive restart, he kept his Number-4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet in front over the final six circuits to notch his third victory of the season and at the same time, deny Kenseth his third straight win on “The Magic Mile.”  Harvick, the Number-4 seed, now joins Martin Truex Junior in the Round of Twelve that opens October 8th in Concord, North Carolina.  Kenseth took second place on Sunday, a half-second behind Harvick.  Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch completed the top five.  Chase drivers filled the top eight spots in the final running order with Kasey Kahne the highest-finishing non-title contender, in ninth place … Carl Edwards started from the pole, led the first thirty laps and finished sixth.  Truex dominated the first half of the race, leading 141 of the first 178 laps en route to a seventh-place finish … Keselowski’s fourth-place finish was enough to lift him into the post-season points lead, by one over Truex and two over Kyle Busch … Toyota drivers dominated the day by leading all but twenty of the laps run on the one-mile oval … Sunday’s race included fourteen lead changes among eight drivers.

On this day in 1978, Waylon Jennings’ album I’ve Always Been Crazy was Certified Gold. The album featured a medley of Buddy Holly hits, including “Well All Right” “It’s So Easy” “Maybe Baby” & “Peggy sue”, as well as a cover of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line.

The album was Jennings’ way to sum up his negative feelings towards the music industry, and how he felt about people who criticized his “Outlaw” lifestyle.

 

William Penn Breaks Scoreless Streak, Takes Down Avila In 2OT

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s soccer team knocked a big monkey off its shoulder as it slipped past Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Avila 1-0 in double overtime Saturday.

After playing scoreless with the Eagles (2-5-1, 0-2 Heart) for 107 minutes, Camila Parra (Jr., Brisbane, Australia, Exercise Science) and the navy and gold finally broke through.  Bre Johnson (Jr., Arvada, Colo., Information Technology) sent a ball into the box and Alyce Correia (Sr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) had a touch on it before Parra put it in the back of the net for her first goal of the season at the 107:58 mark.

Parra’s goal snaps a four-game scoreless stretch for William Penn (3-5, 1-2 Heart).  The Statesmen dominated much of Saturday’s action with a 17-4 edge in shots, including four each from Parra and AnnaMarie Urps (So., Wilton, Calif., Physical Education).

Adriana Borjon (Sr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) came up with three saves for her first shutout of the fall.

“We got tonight’s result because we did not give up on each other and finally made the pressure count,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said.  “I am really happy for the team.  We have been in that position a few times this year and came out on the losing end, but tonight they kept believing in themselves and it worked.”

“We have shown a few times this year how good we can be and how far we have come as a program in the last few years,” McGowan added.  “We just have not hit the back of the net enough this season and hopefully this result can spur us on a bit and give us the confidence to take the chances when they arrive.”

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa Wednesday to host Grand View in Heart action at 5 p.m.

The Greatest Gift Of All – Rascal Flatts

Rascal Flatts have announced the release of their first-ever holiday album, The Greatest Gift of All, out October 21. The 10-track album  features several holiday standards, including a  special rendition of “Silent Night” with vocals from all three band members’ children.  The album also includes a version of the Stevie Wonder classic “Someday At Christmas” as well as “A Strange Way To Save The World,” which was originally recorded by the Christian group 4Him.

 

·       Jay DeMarcus says it may seem crazy that they’ve waited this long to release a Christmas record, but he says they just wanted to do it right. DeMarcus says of the album, “There are certain songs I think most everyone wants to hear during Christmas, and we wanted to put our own special spin on those songs, while adding in a couple of our personal favorites.”

Jason Aldean Surprises Single Mother With A New Car

Jason Aldean continued his streak of fan surprises on Friday (9/23) when he showed up at the Cleveland home of his fan Taylore Wingard and presented the single mother of three with a brand new car. After some initial confusion about where the house actually was, Jason pulled into Taylore’s driveway and surprised her with a host of gifts, including a brand new 2016 Kia Soul courtesy of the Northern Ohio Kia Dealers. A video of Jason’s surprise visit can be seen here.

 

·       Wingard also received tickets and VIP passes to Friday night’s (9/23) “Six String Cirus Tour” date in Cleveland, a copy of Jason’s new album, They Don’t Know, a pair of Justin Boots and Aldean’s signature Resistol hat.

The Post-Season Chase Continues At The Bad Boy Off Road 300

Next Stop New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the second round of the post-season Chase, Sunday’s Bad Boy Off Road 300.  The Sixteen Challengers are traveling along a path that will ultimately lead to a championship for one with 3,194.98 “Miles-2-Miami” left before Ford Championship Weekend.  A couple high-octane names are running on fumes near the bottom of the Chase standings with just two weeks left before the first four drivers are eliminated.  Three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart is twelfth and 2014 champ Kevin Harvick is tied for thirteenth with Kyle Larson after sub-par showings in the post-season opener last weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.  The good news?  Both Stewart and Harvick are former winners on the one-mile Loudon oval.

X-FINITY Post-Season Begins at Kentucky Speedway

The X-FINITY Series heads off to Kentucky Speedway, where twelve title hopefuls begin their post-season journey in Saturday night’s Visit Myrtle Beach-dot com 300. There’s also a rookie holding the top seed in the X-FINITY Series Chase … Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones, who paced the regular season with four wins. He’s joined in the “playoffs” by Elliott Sadler, Daniel Suarez, Ty Dillon, Justin Allgaier, Darrell Wallace Junior, Brendan Gaughan, Ryan Sieg (Seeg), Ryan Reed, Blake Koch, and rookies Brennan Poole and Brandon Jones. The twelve-man title field will be trimmed to eight following the October 7th race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

On this day in 1952, Country Great and Hall of Famer Hank Williams made his last recording, “Your Cheatin’ Heart”. The song was released in January 1953 after his death and became an instant hit, topping the Billboard’s Country & Western Chart for six weeks.

The song is considered Hank Williams “signature song” and has been called the “one of the greatest country standards of all time”.
