Strickler Joins USMTS Winners Circle in King of America VIII Opener

HUMBOLDT, Kan. (March 15)–The USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup was back in action Thursday to kick off the King of America VIII Modified Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment at the Humboldt Speedway with 78 cars and drivers signed in for battle.

Polesitter Jason Krohn led the field to the green flag and paced the first of 40 laps, but North Carolina’s Kyle Strickler drove underneath the 2007 USMTS national champion to take control the second time around before the yellow flag waved for the first time with four laps in the books.

On the restart, Strickler pulled away from Krohn while Darron Fuqua pulled into third and began to challenge for the second spot.

With Strickler comfortably out front and lapped traffic approaching, 2012 King of America champ Stormy Scott came to a stop in turn two to bring out the race’s second caution flag.

Fuqua was able to sneak by Krohn back under green and applied pressure to the rear bumper of Strickler while Dereck Ramirez and R.C. Whitwell completed a five-car breakaway from the rest of the pack.

Kyle Strickler (8) fends off a challenge for the lead by Darron Fuqua during the 40-lap feature race.

Strickler continued to lead with Fuqua waiting for an opportunity to make a move. His chance came with four laps to go when the leaders reached the back of the field.

But Strickler quickly disposed of two lapped cars to pad his advantage, and then cruised the final lap to score his career-first USMTS feature win.

“The USMTS guys are so good, and this is one I’ve wanted for a long time,” a jubilant Strickler said in victory lane. “This ranks right up there with some of the biggest races we’ve won.

“I knew we had a really good race car. When they dropped the green flag, it was time to go. I just hope we can be there again Saturday for the big one.”

Strickler’s triumph was worth $2,500 while Fuqua matched his best USMTS finish with a runner-up paycheck. Krohn, Ramirez and Whitwell remained third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Jason Strand, Ricky Thornton Jr., 2014 King of America winner Rodney Sanders, last year’s Thursday night winner Mitch Keeter and Terry Phillips rounded out the top ten.

The King of America VIII Modified Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment continues Friday and SaturdayOn Friday, each driver will compete in three heat races from three different starting positions.

Passing points will be combined for all three heats with the top 12 in overall points locked into Saturday’s “A” Main. The next dozen drivers will be locked into Saturday’s “B” Main, the next 12 into Saturday’s “C” Main and the remainder will run in Last Chance races on Saturday.

Saturday will feature an “alphabet soup” of features and last-chance races as drivers try to claw their way into a spot for the $10,000-to-win, $1,000-to-start finale.

New for this year will be a Non-Qualifiers Race for the top 30 drivers unable to transfer out of the qualifying features. All 30 drivers will redraw for starting position. This race will pay $1,000 to win and $1,000 for second. The top two finishers will have the option to keep the money or start the King of America main event which pays $1,000 to start. The Non-Qualifiers Race will pay a minimum $300 to start with a great payout all the way through.

The Iron Man Challenge featuring Out-Pace USRA B-Mods will run a complete show both nights, racing for $1,500 to win Friday and $1,000 to win Saturday. National points in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series will also be up for grabs.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:30 on FridaySaturday’s start times are one hour earlier with the first green flag waving at 6:30. Every lap of every race all three days will be broadcast live via pay-per-view at www.RacinDirt.com.

MHP Hospital Auxiliary Donates New Monitoring Machines

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – The Mahaska Health Partnership Hospital Auxiliary recently donated an infant-fetal heart monitor and vital sign machine to MHP for use in the Birthing Center and Inpatient Services. Each monitor donated cost more than $3,000.

According to Birthing Center Director Heather Cook, the new infant-fetal heart monitor provides the Birthing Center with more accurate readings of infant and fetal heart rates. As a part of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), this equipment improves the healthcare professionals provide to newborns at the time of delivery.

In Inpatient Services, the vital sign machine will impact patient care “by allowing nurses to spend more time with patients and less time figuring out vitals,” according to Inpatient Services Director Amanda Rynearson. The new machine will also provide more accuracy in tracking vitals to ensure that proper treatment plans are developed.

The MHP Hospital Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that helps promote and advance the welfare of MHP and its mission. Members help purchase needed medical equipment and support various hospital programs that benefit the community.

Formed in 1955, the MHP Hospital Auxiliary has provided support to the hospital through money raised by operating Whispering Tree Gifts, located on the lower level of the new patient care wing at entrance #4. The volunteer organization also hosts a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including uniform, jewelry, plant and book sales.

The annual Masquerade Jewelry Sale, open to the public, is set for Wednesday, April 25 from 9 am to 4 pm in the Cedar Bluff Learning Center at MHP. This location is best accessed through entrance #3.

If you are interested in becoming an MHP Hospital Auxiliary member or would like more information regarding volunteer opportunities at MHP, please call 641.672.3342 or visit us online at mahaskahealth.org.

Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani In No Rush To Wed

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are definitely happy and in love, but sources say they have no plans to walk down the aisle anytime soon.

“There is no reason for them to rush into a marriage so they aren’t,” a source tells “Entertainment Tonight.” “Both of them are happy and content with where their relationship is right now.” The insider adds, “They are on cloud nine for each other. They are perfect for each other. They know they have found their true soulmate.”

And while Blake has been busy with his “Country Music Freaks Tour,” it isn’t an issue in his relationship, especially since Gwen’s been with him for most of the shows. The source notes, “They support each other in all that they do. They’re almost always by each other’s side.”

(DES MOINES, Iowa) — A longtime developer of low-income housing in Iowa, Jeffrey W. VOORHEES, has been charged with creating a false pass-through company in order to artificially inflate a loan to rehabilitate a housing development located in various towns and cities in Iowa, announced United States Attorney Marc Krickbaum.

According to the indictment, VOORHEES, acting through his own consulting company and a not-for-profit entity, purchased and rehabilitated seven properties which together formed what was referred to as Candleridge VII. The properties were purchased with a United States Department of Agriculture direct loan, and were rehabilitated with a private bank loan that was guaranteed by USDA in the event of default. Brian L. PITTMAN, the general contractor on the development, is also charged in the scheme with VOORHEES. Together, PITTMAN and VOORHEES are alleged to have artificially inflated construction costs and created a pass-through company, Rural Construction Services, in order to obtain approximately $359,000 in artificially inflated loan proceeds. VOORHEES is also alleged to have artificially inflated other costs in the loan to obtain an additional approximately $318,000 in loan proceeds. The loan proceeds were to be repaid using USDA-subsidized tenant rents.

The purpose of these USDA loan programs is to support the development of rental units for low- and moderate-income individuals and families in rural areas and towns. USDA regulates how the loan proceeds can be spent, and also imposes requirements on the borrowers to disclose any identity of interest relationships. The indictment alleges that VOORHEES knew these regulations but did not follow them in order to unlawfully profit from the USDA loan programs.

VOORHEES and PITTMAN are together charged with five counts of wire fraud affecting a financial institution. Each of those counts is punishable by up to 30 years in prison. The indictment also charges VOORHEES with three felony counts relating to allegedly moving the profits of RCS into bank accounts in his wife’s name, each count of which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. If convicted, the Court must impose a reasonable sentence under federal statutes and the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This investigation was conducted by the USDA-Office of Inspector General, and the case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

One Man Dead After Police Standoff in Pella

(PELLA, Iowa) – A standoff between an Illinois man and Iowa law enforcement ended late Wednesday afternoon with the death of the man.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at approximately 6:30 pm the Pella Police Department received a report from a local citizen concerning the welfare of a man staying in the Pella area. The man, later identified as Jonathan W. Martin, 62, of Galena, IL, was located in an apartment on W. 16th Street in Pella. Upon further investigation Pella officers learned that Martin was a fugitive from the State of Illinois, wanted on felony charges with nationwide extradition authorized. Officers attempted to establish contact with Martin, but multiple efforts were rejected.

Pella officers concluded that an additional person, a female, was in the apartment with Martin. Officers were eventually able to speak with the female, but efforts to have Martin exit the unit failed.

At the request of the Pella Police Department, on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, mid-morning, negotiators from the Iowa State Patrol assumed the lead in negotiating with the occupants of the apartment. The female occupant in the apartment agreed to exit prior to noon, and was found to be uninjured. As the event played out it was clearly established that additional assets were required to successfully resolve the incident. The ISP State Tactical Unit responded to the scene and upon entering the apartment determined that Mr. Martin was deceased of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The scene and incident was turned over to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Pella Police Department Criminal Investigations for evaluation and further investigation. Martin was transferred to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, Ankeny, Iowa, where he will undergo a forensic examination.

Council Bluffs Man Sentenced for Firearm Charges

(COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa) – United States Attorney Marc Krickbaum announced that on March 13, 2018, Jesus Everardo Medina, 33, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was sentenced to 37 months in prison, and ordered to serve three years of Supervised Release at the conclusion of his imprisonment, by Senior District Court Judge Robert Pratt for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

The investigation began with law enforcement with the Council Bluffs Police Department responding to a gunshot being heard in the 1400 block of Avenue B shortly after midnight on June 5, 2017. Upon arriving in the area, officers located nine millimeter shell casings and were told by a witness that the party responsible, Jesus Medina, had left the area in a gold colored two door car. This vehicle was located by law enforcement a short distance from the 1400 block of Avenue B, with Medina in the back seat. A nine millimeter Jennings semi-automatic handgun was found in the seat pocket in front of Medina. Medina was convicted of a felony offense in 2009 making it unlawful for him to possess a firearm.

The investigation was conducted by the Council Bluffs Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Students Invited to Submit Artwork for ‘From the Farm to You’ Calendar

(DES MOINES, Iowa) – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today encouraged students from Iowa to submit artwork to be considered for inclusion in the “From the Farm to You” calendar. The calendars are distributed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at the Iowa State Fair and include artwork that emphasizes the connection between the production of Iowa’s farmers and the products used by people every day.

“These calendars do a great job of showcasing Iowa agriculture to the visitors at our booths during the Iowa State Fair. The creativity and artistic ability of these students help educate fairgoers about where their food comes from,” Naig said.

Students of all ages are invited to submit artwork. Pictures should be drawn using only black lines on plain white paper, 8 ½ by 11 inches. The pictures should not be colored. They can be submitted to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Calendar Kids, 502 E. 9th St., Des Moines, IA 50319.

Drawings must be received by May 1, 2018 to be considered.

Students whose artwork is selected to be in the calendar will be recognized during the Iowa State Fair. An electronic version of the current calendar can be seen at http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/press/pdfs/2017/FarmToYouCalendar2017.pdf.
