Statesmen men’s soccer hosts Grand View

William Penn University’s men’s soccer team hosts Grand View Wednesday afternoon (11/13) in the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament semifinals.  The Statesmen have a 6-5 overtime win over Grand View during the regular season.  One standout for the Statesmen this season is senior forward Eduardo Bonatto.  The Brazilian has set a school record for goals this season with 17.  Statesmen Coach Jayme Highcock talks about Bonatto’s season.

“He’s bought in to what we’ve been trying to do for a number of years.  He has always got better every year.  He has been a key player for us on and off the field and he’s getting everything that he deserves.  He works hard on and off the field and he’s doing fantastic.  He’s got great stats, he’s a great leader, he’s a great guy and we’re lucky to have him.”

The Statesmen take on Grand View Wednesday afternoon at 4 at Drost Field.

Hospital merger called off

Iowa’s UnityPoint Health and South Dakota-based Sanford Health have abruptly halted plans to merge.

UnityPoint owns Grinnell Regional Medical Center.  No reason was given for the decision from either side.  In June, the two regional health care systems announced they would be combining to create one of the largest nonprofit health care systems in the country, with more than $11 billion in operating revenue.

Bahena Rivera to appear in court

A hearing will be held in Poweshiek County Court Wednesday morning (11/13) to determine what evidence can be used in Cristhian Bahena Rivera’s murder trial.  He’s accused of killing 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts last summer in Brooklyn.  One of the law enforcement officers involved in the case did not fully read Rivera his Miranda rights, so Rivera’s attorneys want part of his interview with police to not be used as evidence.  State prosecutors understand Rivera will testify through a written affidavit.  They contend that since the affidavit is the same as testimony, they should have the right to cross-examine Rivera.  Rivera’s murder trial is scheduled for February in Sioux City.

This day in 1999, Garth Brooks’ rock alter ego, “Chris Gaines” appears on SNL

Today in 1999, fans confused by Garth Brooks’ rock alter ego, Chris Gaines, may have had their bewilderment compounded when “Saturday Night Live” started promoting its upcoming show as being hosted by Garth with Chris Gaines appearing as the musical guest. Actually, it was Garth’s only live performance in the guise of his alter ego.

Officer accused of killing Oklahoma police chief in Florida

By TAMARA LUSH and JAKE BLEIBERG

A small-town Oklahoma policeman was charged with killing his chief after what authorities described as an alcohol-fueled brawl in a Florida Panhandle hotel room.

The two men had been staying at the Hilton on Pensacola Beach over the weekend for a law enforcement conference, said Escambia County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Amber Southard.

At some point early Sunday evening, hotel security was called because the two men were being disruptive, Southard said. Later that evening, hotel staff called the sheriff’s department because the men were fighting.

“An actual physical altercation,” she said.

When deputies arrived, they found Chief Lucky Miller dead, she said, and there was no weapon. She added that alcohol was involved and that an autopsy is underway.

A person who answered the phone at a number associated with Miller declined to comment and asked that The Associated Press not call again.

Michael Patrick Nealey, 49, was arrested Monday morning and charged with killing Miller, according to records.

Miller was the police chief in Mannford, Oklahoma, a small town about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Tulsa. It has a population of about 3,200.

Nealey was being held without bond at the Escambia County Jail. He’s charged with homicide. A lawyer for Nealey wasn’t listed on jail records and no additional details were immediately available.

Miller, 44, had been police chief since 2007. He and his wife had three children.

“We are heartbroken by the news,” Mayor Tyler Buttram said in the statement. “Please keep both families in your prayers as we work to move forward.”

The town administrator has appointed another officer as interim police chief.

The conference was to be held Monday to Wednesday at the hotel, but it’s unclear if it is still scheduled. An email to the organization wasn’t immediately returned. One of the presenters said his session had been cancelled. A Mannford police officer told The Tulsa World that the pair was in Florida to learn about death scene investigations.

“Mike Nealey was our detective. Lucky was a hands-on guy, so he always wanted to be there to learn things like that,” Officer Jerry Ridley said.

Brett Graves, the President of Carterson Public Safety, the company that organized the event, said in a statement that he was saddened by the news.

“We would like to extend our condolences to the families and agency of those involved.”

Mayor Buttram said the two men were “the best of friends” and told The Associated Press that he can’t fathom what happened in Florida.

“That’s what makes everything so hard. We can’t even wrap our heads around this,” he said. “The city’s just stunned. The police department’s stunned. Nothing makes sense, nothing adds up.”

This story has been corrected to show that the Mannford town administrator has appointed another officer to be interim police chief, not that that the administrator has been appointed as police chief. This story has also corrected Escambia County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Amber Southard’s last name and the time of day when Miller’s body was found.

Xavier Foster’s choice: Iowa State

Oskaloosa’s Xavier Foster announced Monday (11/11) he will play college basketball at Iowa State next year.  The seven foot senior was recruited by several colleges, including Iowa, Providence, Kansas and Baylor…after averaging 14 and a half points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots a game last season as Oskaloosa won the State 3A championship.  Foster talked about his decision.

“Just because of the relationships, really.  Me and Tyrese (Cyclones guard Tyrese Haliburton) are good friends, we talk often.  I don’t know. I just feel at home there.  It was really just a gut feeling.  Watching the games and then especially the Iowa State background, the atmosphere.  It’s crazy there and it’s just something I want to be a part of.”

Foster says he expects to be a role player for the Cyclones next season.  But first he has one more piece of business—winning another state championship at Oskaloosa.  The Indians boys open their season December 3 at Fairfield.  You can hear Oskaloosa High basketball all season on KBOE-FM and the No Coast Network.

OHS celebrates Veterans Day

Veterans Day celebrations were held across America Monday (11/11).  Oskaloosa High School was one place where veterans were honored.  Oskaloosa student Aiden Scott spoke about a trip to Normandy he and several classmates took during this summer’s 75th anniversary of D-Day….and the chance they had to speak to veterans who took part in the invasion of Normandy.

“These men were humble.  They never called themselves heroes.  We were fortunate on June 7, the day after the ceremony, to talk to some of the World War II veterans. The veterans said that they weren’t the heroes….that the heroes were the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice–their lives.”

Chaplain Tim Hadley from Pekin, the guest speaker, said “Veterans Day isn’t just about veterans, but is about Americans.  It is a day to remember why they were fighting and a day for all of us to begin our journey of protecting our freedoms and the freedom of many future generations.”

Biden speaks to veterans in Oskaloosa

Former Vice President Joe Biden unveiled a plan Monday (11/11) to support veterans and their families.  Speaking at a veterans’ town hall in Oskaloosa, the Democratic Presidential candidate says he wants to keep the VA as the top outlet for veterans to get the best possible quality of care.

“The VA has more specialized knowledge about the kinds of health problems that veterans have from needing prostheses to mental and physical concerns that are, in fact, unique to having served in the military.  We have a responsibility, in my view, to insure that we’re providing veterans with world class health care…the world class health care they deserve.”

Following his appearance in Oskaloosa, Biden took part in a CNN Town Hall at Grinnell College.
