Joni Ernst in Sigourney

Iowa US Senator Joni Ernst is back in Washington after the Easter recess.  She spent Friday afternoon (4/26) in Sigourney, touring Atwood Electric’s facility.  Ernst says the first order of business will be to pass a supplemental disaster relief package that will help those affected by flooding in western Iowa.

“I met with the President and Several other senators before I left Washington, DC to talk about the supplemental assistance and it must include the midwest funding for our flood victims.”

Ernst says the Senate will also be working on judicial nominations and presidential appointments.

Miranda Lambert Names Her Fashion Line After Her Horse

Miranda Lambert launched her very own clothing line Idyllwind last September, but you probably don’t know where she got the name for the brand. In an interview with the “New York Post,” Miranda shares that the line was named after her horse, Ellie Idyllwind.

“I had started riding horses at the age of 30. I had never ridden a horse before in my life — it was fun and a bit scary at the same time,” she shared. “When thinking about naming the brand and what this clothing line meant to me, it was all about taking risks, being brave and trying something new, and that was represented in my life on horseback at the time, so the name Idyllwind seemed perfect.”

As for the brand itself, Miranda notes, “Idyllwind is an extension of me, who I am, and my music,” adding, “It has a vintage Western vibe with an edge; it definitely reflects my personal style. It is inspired by what I enjoy doing, what I do when I am on my off time. I am usually in a T-shirt and cutoffs wearing some cute boots.”

New Sharon driver wins race in Kansas

After several near misses in the early going this season, Zack VanderBeek finally found the road to victory lane and garnered his 48th career USMTS win at the 81 Speedway on Thursday night.

The 34-year-old from New Sharon, Iowa, hasn’t employed any drastic measures to get faster, just plugging away.

“We made some little changes, but we’re just working hard and not giving up,” he said after receiving the winner’s trophy just shortly after 10:30. “It’s a heck of a lot easier when you can start in front of these guys.”

Local favorite and Wichita native Cody Schniepp snagged the Sybesma Pole Award, but VanderBeek muscled his familiar No. 33z Casey’s General Stores VanderBuilt Race Cars USMTS Modified into the top spot to lead the first lap.

About 20 minutes and 40 laps later, ‘The Z-Man’ finally had a checkered flag to take home from C. Ray Hall’s historic facility-a place where VanderBeek had piled up several near-misses over the last decade.

Two top tens for Osky at Drake Relays

Two top ten finishes for Oskaloosa Thursday (4/25) at the Drake Relays.  The Indians’ Sophia Dykstra was sixth in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 3 inches, and Faith DeRonde was ninth with a throw of 128 feet, 7 inches.  Dykstra is a sophomore and DeRonde a freshman, and they were the only two from their respective grades to reach the discus finals.

More Oskaloosa athletes will be competing Friday and Saturday  (4/26 & 27) at the Drake Relays.  Senior Casey Hill will be part of two relay teams and he’ll also compete in the discus.  Hill says being part of the Drake Relays is special.

“Any time you get to step foot on the blue oval is a special thing.  And especially when you’re in the top half of all classes in the state and being able to compete with all of them is even better.”

You can see the full list of Oskaloosa athletes that qualified for the Drake Relays at KBOEradio.com and radioKMZN.com.

Quarantines at 2 LA universities amid US measles outbreak

By CHRISTOPHER WEBER

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A quarantine at two Los Angeles universities affected more than 200 students and staff who may have been exposed to measles and either have not been vaccinated or cannot verify that they are immune.

The order issued in connection with the University of California and Cal State University comes as the number of measles cases nationwide has hit a 25-year high . The order requires that affected people stay home, avoid contact with others and notify authorities if they develop measles symptoms.

The virus is highly contagious, spread by coughing and sneezing.

“One person with a confirmed measles case can expose thousands of people to measles,” the county’s public health department director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said at a news conference Thursday.

Los Angeles County public health officials issued quarantines of 24 to 48 hours until proof of immunity is established, officials said. Some people may need to be quarantined for up to a week.

Measles in the United States has climbed to its highest level in 25 years, closing in on 700 cases this year in a resurgence largely attributed to misinformation that is turning parents against vaccines. Roughly three-quarters of this year’s illnesses have been in New York state.

A UCLA student who was diagnosed with measles possibly exposed 500 people on campus to measles in early April, according to a statement from the school.

As of Thursday afternoon, 79 of those students and faculty members had not provided medical records showing that they are immune to measles, the university said.

“Please be assured that we have the resources we need for prevention and treatment, and that we are working very closely with local public health officials on the matter,” UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement.

Meanwhile at Cal State, a person infected with measles visited a library and possibly encountered hundreds of employees, some of whom were students. One hundred fifty-six of them could not provide their immunization records as of Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from the Cal State.

Health officials determined that there is “no known current risk related to measles at the library at this time,” officials said.

A small outbreak of measles has broken out in Los Angeles County involving five confirmed cases linked to overseas travel. The state recorded 38 measles cases as of Thursday; there were 11 around the same time last year, said Dr. Karen Smith, director of the California Department of Public Health.

The state typically sees fewer than two dozen cases a year, she said.

This year, California’s cases stretch across 11 counties and affect patients from 5 months old to 55.

More than 76{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} of patients were not vaccinated or did not receive the recommended two doses of vaccine, Smith said. Fourteen of those infected had traveled overseas to countries including Philippines, Thailand, India and Ukraine.

Measles in most people causes fever, runny nose, cough and a rash all over the body. However, a small fraction of those infected can have complications such as pneumonia and a dangerous swelling of the brain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the vaccine for everyone over a year old, except for people who had the disease as children. Those who have had measles are immune.

The vaccine, which became available in the 1960s, is considered safe and effective, and because of it, measles was declared all but eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.

Taylor Swift Drops New Song & Video

Taylor Swift fans finally got the answer they’ve been waiting two weeks for. The singer dropped her new single “ME!,” featuring Panic at the Disco’s Brendon Urie.

Before the official drop, Taylor stopped by ABC’s live NFL Draft coverage, where she officially announced the song and told Robin Roberts it was “about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it.” She added, “With a pop song, we have the ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads and I just want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves.”

As for her fans, Taylor noted, “I cannot believe how dedicated they are, how thoughtful,” adding, “I can’t believe how much they care. It makes it more fun for me to create music, to create music videos, knowing that they’ll care about little Easter eggs, and you have no idea how much fun that is to make stuff for people who care about it that much. So it’s the fans.” Finally, she offers, “They’ve always been there and it’s just gotten more fun as time has passed.”

This day in 2013: George Jones passes away at 81

Today in 2013, George Jones died at the age of 81. The legendary “Possum” was as known for his turbulent marriage to Tammy Wynette and struggle with drugs and alcohol as he was for his music.

He wasn’t just an inspiration to country artists, On the day of his death, Nathan Followill of the alternative rock band Kings of Leon tweeted, “RIP, George Jones, you’ll be sorely missed. One of the all time greats.”

Jones’ story was one of redemption. After quitting booze cold turkey in 1999, his legend became based on the realism in his music and his dedication to “hardcore country music,” which remained resolute until the day he died.
