MCCB Preps For Movie By Moonlight

OSKALOOSA — Gather up the kids, scrounge up an old blanket or a couple of yard chairs and head out to Eveland Access this weekend. Moonlight movie night is back on Saturday.

The Mahaska County Conservation Board (MCCB) has held movie nights over holiday weekends for a number of years. “We show a family-friendly movie that’s free to the public, and we provide popcorn,” said MCCB Naturalist Laura DeCook.

“It’s a neat atmosphere right along the river; it’s a really neat place to see a nighttime movie outdoors.”

For many kids, summer means camp. MCCB has you covered. “We have day camps for different ages of kids and different times,” said DeCook. Sign-ups for Discovery camp have closed, but campers age 5 and younger will enjoy this year’s theme: The Hungry Caterpillar.

“It’s all about insects: where they live, how to identify them, the basic body parts. We do some  fun games and activities.”

The Junior Naturalist camp begins July 8 for ages 6-12. “We do a lot more of the hands-on outdoor skills, like teach them how to go fishing, tie their fishing knots,” said DeCook.

“We do hiking, plant identification and just a lot of engaging them in the outdoors, and we try to just introduce them to new outdoor skills.”

Lunch in the Park is ongoing throughout July and August. Bring a lunch and visit Russell Wildlife Center to enjoy the meal and learn a little. “I have different topics that I’ll present those days,” said DeCook. “Sometimes it’s a craft activity like the Cherokee leaf pounding or cooking fish. Today was all about the mammoths found in Mahaska County.”

The next Lunch in the Park will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, and DeCook will be presenting “What Lives in a Pond.”

“I’ll have an aquarium set up where they can actually see some of  these things,” she said. “It’ll be up here [at the wildlife center] because it’s a quick lunchtime and to save them from having to go down to the pond.”

The full moon in July  will be prime time for a movie (E.T.) and a night- time hike. The moon “just lights up the trails; you probably won’t even have to have a flashlight going down the trails if it’s a full moon and not cloudy,” said DeCook.

MCCB will be present at Sweet Corn Seranade and will feature another moonlight movie over Labor Day weekend. The popular Youth Outdoor Field Day will be returning in September.

Tony Stewart Survives Fierce Last-Lap Duel With Denny Hamlin To Take The Toyota/Save Mart 350

Tony Stewart survived a fierce last-lap duel with former teammate Denny Hamlin, nosing past Hamlin under braking in the next-to-last corner of the final lap at Sonoma Raceway and driving on to his forty-ninth career Cup Series victory. It ended an eighty-four-race winless streak for the three-time champion that dated back to June 2013.

Before Sunday, Stewart’s last trip to Victory Lane had come at Dover International Speedway. He took the white flag yesterday with Hamlin in hot pursuit and briefly lost the lead to his Joe Gibbs Racing rival. But Stewart calmly measured his opponent as they navigated the final turns on the Northern California road course and made his winning pass with the checkered flag in sight. The margin of victory was six-tenths of a second.

Joey Logano, pole sitter Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Junior completed the top five.

Stewart sat out the early weeks of the season while recovering from back surgery after he was injured in late January while driving dune buggies on vacation in California. Despite missing eight races, he’s eligible for the post-season Chase provided he’s among the top thirty in the standings at the end of the regular season.

With Sunday’s victory, Stewart’s nine points shy of that with 10 races left before the sixteen-driver title field is set … Stewart started tenth and led the final twenty-two laps of Sunday’s race in his Number-14 Chevrolet. Runner-up Hamlin led a race-high thirty-three laps around the two-mile natural road course …Sunday’s race included twelve lead changes among eight drivers. There were four cautions for ten laps.

(Information from: The Des Moines Register, http://www.desmoinesregister.com)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Longtime Iowa sports broadcaster Bob Brooks, whose career covering athletics of every kind spanned seven decades, has died. He was 89.

Brooks’ son, Rob Brooks, says his father died Saturday.

The Des Moines Register reports that Brooks was born in Cedar Rapids and graduated from the city’s Franklin High School in 1944. That was the same year he began his first broadcasting job at a local radio station, which he kept through his four years at the University of Iowa.

Affectionately known as “Brooksie,” he worked for a variety of Iowa radio and television stations throughout his career. For the last 15 years, he covered sports for Cedar Rapids radio station KMRY, until his recent illness.

Besides his son, Brooks is survived by his wife, Susie.

Next Stop Sonoma Raceway

Next stop Sonoma Raceway in Northern California for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, the sixteenth round of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the first of two road races on the schedule. With Joey Logano’s victory twelve days ago at Michigan International Speedway, the list of Sprint Cup winners this season grew to ten. If there are seven more drivers who reach Victory Lane over the final eleven regular-season races, then there’ll be one driver with a victory to his credit who will not get a spot on the 2016 Chase Grid –which will include only the sixteen top eligible drivers based primarily on race wins. The lone remaining driver who won last year but is still without a victory in 2016 is Dale Earnhardt Junior.

In 2001, the album became three-time Certified Platinum.

Oskaloosa Among Teams With Friendly Draws In Softball Regional Pairings

The softball season is starting to wind down in Iowa, and the regional brackets for all five classes have been released.

In Class 1A, Region 4 has Montezuma hosting BGM in an area matchup with the winner drawing #3 Alburnett in the quarterfinals on the road. That matchup is on Tuesday, July 5th at 7 PM. In the same half of the Region 4 bracket, English Valleys will be on the road to face Don Bosco in Gilbertville on July 5th at 7 PM.

In Class 1A Region 5, Moravia gets a couple of home games in their section of the bracket. They’ll first face Twin Cedars at home on July 5th at 7 PM. The winner of that game will face either Cardinal or Moulton-Udell, who play in Eldon on the 5th at 7 PM. Second round games are the next night, July 6th.

In the bottom of that Region 5 bracket, Sigourney also gets a chance to host two games. The Savages will play Keota in a Keokuk County battle on July 5th at 7 PM with the winner playing either Lone Tree or Tri-County. That matchup is in Lone Tree on the 5th at 7 PM.

There are two area teams in the bottom half of the Class 1A Region 6 bracket. Lynnville-Sully is hosting Southeast Warren on July 5th at 7 PM with the winner to play either Colfax-Mingo or Melcher-Dallas. Melcher-Dallas has to go on the road for that one, and that is in Colfax on July 5th at 7 PM.

In Class 2A, Region 3 has Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with a couple of home games. The Rockets will first face North Mahaska in Eddyville on July 6th at 7 PM. Pleasantville is in that same part of the bracket, as they face Des Moines Christian at home at 7 PM on the 6th. The winners of those two games will play in Eddyville on July 8th at 7 PM in the regional semifinals. Van Meter is the top seed in the bracket despite EBF ranked one spot higher in the most recent rankings.

In Class 2A Region 5, Pella Christian got a tough draw. The 10th ranked Eagles will face Madrid at home on July 6th at 7 PM, then should they win, they would host any of three non-area teams. If they win that game, they would be in the regional final, but that would be against #1 ranked Iowa City Regina on July 11th.

Pekin is the lone school in our area in Class 2A Region 6. The Panthers host Van Buren on July 5th at 7 PM for the right to play Highland on the road on July 6th. Highland recently fell out of the rankings.

Class 3A is very interesting, and Region 4 is the headline bracket in our area. Four area teams are in the same half of the eight team bracket. Centerville will host Davis County and Albia will host Mid-Prairie. Both of those games are at 7 PM on July 6th. The winner of those two games will play in Centerville on July 8th. 2nd ranked Davenport Assumption is the top team in the bracket.

PCM is in Region 7 in Class 3A, and they have to face #12 CMB in the first round in Collins on July 6th at 7 PM. #13 Clarke is actually the top seed in what is a wide open bracket.

In Class 4A, Newton has had a great season, and the 13th ranked Cardinals get a first round bye in Region 2. They’ll face either Boone or Webster City at home on July 9th at 7 PM. #4 Waverly-Shell Rock is the other top team in the region.

In Region 4 in Class 4A, Fairfield gets the bye, as the Trojans will face either Fort Madison or Davenport North at home on July 9th at 7 PM. Southeast Conference foe Keokuk is the other top team in the bracket, which could set up a classic matchup. Keokuk is currently ranked 7th with Fairfield 8th. Fairfield has lost both games against Keokuk this year so far. They do have two more meetings later this year.

In Class 4A Region 5, Oskaloosa was rewarded for a great season by getting the top seed. They will host either Clear Creek-Amana or Marion in a favorable matchup on July 9th at 7 PM. Should the fifth ranked Indians win, they would host the regional final on July 12th at 7 PM. Their toughest competition will come in the form of 11th ranked Mount Pleasant, who is currently 18-6.

The Region 6 bracket in Class 4A has a pair of teams from the area. Grinnell received a home game and they will host Ballard on July 7th at 7 PM. If the Tigers win, they’ll face #2 ranked Carlisle on the road on July 9th. July 9th will also be the first game for Pella, who got a first round bye. The 14th ranked Lady Dutch will host either Vinton-Shellsburg or Cedar Rapids Xavier at 7 PM. Barring an upset, Pella would then have to go on the road to face Carlisle for a trip to state.

The last area team in Class 4A is Knoxville, and they are on the road from the get-go against Des Moines Hoover on July 7th. Should they pull that upset, the Panthers would have to face three-time defending state champion Dallas Center-Grimes, who is the top seed in the region.

Finally, Class 5A’s lone area team is Ottumwa and they are in Region 2. The #15 Bulldogs will host Southeast Polk in the regional semifinals on July 9th at 7 PM. The unfortunate part of the draw for Ottumwa is that #1 Johnston looms in that region, and would likely host Ottumwa for a trip to state on July 12th.

We will have full coverage of all area teams and their postseason brackets on radiokmzn.com and during our sports segments on 104.9 FM KBOE and 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN.
