Pet of the Week: Mia

Guess who is back! It’s me, Mia. I’m here at the shelter again because my owner had to move and I couldn’t come along. I’m pretty sad about the whole situation but I’m hopeful that a new human will come along and just fall head over heels in love with me. I may be 5 years old, but I still have a lot of energy and cuddles left to give. And I’m all four paw declawed; that means you don’t have to worry about my tearing up your furniture or scratching your arms, not like I would ever do that anyway! Why don’t you come on out to the shelter and pick me up. You won’t be disappointed!

Oskaloosa Boys Perform Well At State Track Meet

The Oskaloosa boys’ track and field team was represented extremely well last week at the state meet in Des Moines with five total events.

Junior J’Von Harris medaled in both of his events, as he finished 3rd place in the high jump and 4th in the long jump.

Senior Austin Reed also performed very well, finishing in 3rd place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.57 seconds, just .15 seconds behind the state champion. That time is also a personal best and a new school record. Reed will now move on to run at Simpson College in Indianola in track and field.

Reed also was a part of the shuttle hurdle relay team with Andy Sterner, Jaden Van Roekel, and Mason Aschenbrenner. That group finished 11thafter coming into state ranked 22nd.

Carter Huyser was the final participant for the Indians, and he finished in 8th place in the 800-meter run.

Overall, it was a great season for Oskaloosa Track and Field, and the Mahaska Zone Network wishes to congratulate everyone on a great 2016 campaign.

May 23rd: On This Day

On this day in 2001, both Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney were found not guilty on all charges stemming from Kenny’s infamous unauthorized horse ride backstage during the George Strait Country Festival in Buffalo, New York.

According to reports, Chesney had asked a Sheriff’s daughter if he could ride the horse, before climbing aboard the horse and riding off, ignoring orders to stop.  Two officers tried to remove him, and McGraw and his manager got involved. A small scuffle broke out resulting in the officers suffering slight injuries.

Tips For Avoiding Car Theft

As the temperatures rise, unfortunately so do the car burglaries. Some burglar’s prefer “easy targets” such as an unlocked car with valuables inside.

Here are some tips to minimize your chances of being a victim:

– Always lock your car, no matter if it is parked in front of your residence or in your driveway.

– If you do park your car outside, park in well-lit and/or high visibility areas. You may want to add lighting, such as a motion detector light or security lights.

– If your car has a security system, use it. Your car horn honking or headlights flashing may be enough to scare off any would be burglar and draw attention to a potential problem.

– Remove all valuables from your car if possible. If you leave them inside, place them out of sight or in the trunk. Most burglars are looking for something of value and easy to take, such as a purse/wallet, computer, cell phone or GPS system. It is also not a good idea to store change/cash in your cup holder as this is something that is attractive to burglars and often taken in car burglaries.

– Never leave your keys in your car. Chances are you may be missing more than your spare change, cell phone or GPS.

– Be a good neighbor. If you see suspicious activity such as individuals looking in vehicles, walking close to vehicles or individuals out at a late hour, call and report it immediately. By working to together, we can reduce vehicle burglaries and reduce crime in neighborhoods.

Press release by the Oskaloosa Police Department

Joey Logano Takes Sprint All-Star Race

Joey Logano chased race leader Kyle Larson down in the late stages of the final segment Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, grabbing his final lead of the night just two laps from the finish and keeping the Number-22 Ford in front the rest of the way to notch his first victory in the annual non-points special event. Brad Keselowski finished second, giving Team Penske a one-two sweep in the race – which featured a new format that included mandatory pit stops within a prescribed period of time that left many competitors confused and uncertain of what was unfolding.

In a random draw before the night’s final thirteen-lap segment, it was revealed that the top eleven drivers would have to pit for four tires while the remainder of the field would remain on the track on old rubber. Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson restarted on the front row for the final segment but on worn tires, they were no match for competitors who clearly benefitted from the four-tire pit stop. Larson quickly moved into the lead and held the top spot until Logano’s late charge to victory. Larson brushed the outside wall while racing hard with Logano and slipped to sixteenth place at the finish.

Larson and Carl Edwards each won one of the two fifty-lap segments that preceded the final dash to the checkered flag, which netted Logano a one-million-dollar payday. Keselowski led a race-high thirty-nine laps en route to his runner-up finish. Dale Earnhardt Junior placed third with Edwards and Kurt Busch completing the top five.

New Youth Coordinator At YMCA

OSKALOOSA – Kim Stutting, originally from Wisconsin and a William Penn University graduate, has been hired as Mahaska County YMCA’s Youth Coordinator. Under the direction of Kathy Chamra, YMCA Child Care Director, the position has been vacant for some time but Chamra said the ideal candidate has now been hired.

“I am excited for Kim and the Y,” said Chamra. “She brings a wealth of experience working with youth and has a host of new ideas and activities which will be implemented in not only the after school program but summer camp as well.”

Stutting received her undergraduate degree from Central College and has a degree in art and sociology as well as a master’s degree in Business Leadership. She and her husband, who is also a WPU grad, moved back to Okaloosa last summer. They have two children.

Stutting said she has a passion for working with children, helping them learn and grow, and has a long history of working with children in a variety of activities including Girl Scouts, Lego League, sports teams, cheerleading, and activities through her church.

“I enjoy planning activities that artfully intertwine learning and exciting engagement,” said Stutting, “and believe in helping children learn critical and creative thinking skills. I want to provide opportunities for them to develop their talents and abilities, give them opportunities to learn proper problem-solving skills while working as a team. It helps them as kids, it helps them as they grow and mature. They find it very rewarding when they successfully conquer challenges as a team. It’s fun learning with life-long applications.”

Stutting said she will be revamping the after school program for the 2016-17 school year and is excited to continue working with the school district and the Y’s community partners. She says she will be bringing “more fun into learning.”  But for the moment, with school coming to a close, her focus is on the Y’s summer camp.

“I attended camp for 13 years and was a counselor after that,” said Stutting. “I want to make sure our campers personally experience what I experienced. I want them to create those lifelong memories while forming bonds with cabin groups with is so much a part of the camp experience.”

“Discovery” is a series of week-long camps throughout the summer beginning May 23. Each week’s theme is different. Some other community partners will be participating this year including Robotics Club and Master Gardeners. Stutting encourages any parent interested in this summer’s camps to call the Y (641.673.8411) for specific details. Summer camp information is also available on the Y’s web site (www.MahaskaYMCA.org).

On The Track, The Next Stop Is Charlotte Motor Speedway

On the track, the next stop is Charlotte Motor Speedway for the thirty-second running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night. Denny Hamlin is the defending winner and is bidding to become just the third driver with back-to- back All-Star victories. Jimmie Johnson won in 2012 and 2013 while Davey Allison was victorious in 1991 and 1992.

The race will be run in three segments, fifty laps in the first two and then a thirteen-lap dash to the finish … There are to be mandatory green-flag pit stops during each of the first two segments. Prior to the final thirteen laps, a random draw will determine whether the top nine, ten or eleven cars will enter pit road for a mandatory four-tire stop. The other drivers will remain on the track on old tires to complete the race … Winner collects one million dollars … In addition to the fifteen drivers now eligible for the All-Star Race, the three winners from each segment of tonight’s Sprint Showdown preliminary race will transfer into Saturday’s main event along with the top two drivers voted in through fan balloting – bringing the All-Star starting field up to twenty drivers.
