Kyle Busch Takes The Go Bowling 400

Kyle Busch passed Tony Stewart for his final lead of the night thirty-seven laps from the finish and kept the Number-18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in front the rest of the way Saturday at Kansas Speedway, notching his third victory of the season. Busch started sixth, took his first lead just twenty-six laps into the race and beat runner-up Kevin Harvick to the checkered flag by one-point- one seconds. It’s Busch’s thirty- seventh career Cup Series victory but his first in seventeen starts on the Kansas City oval. Kurt Busch finished third with Matt Kenseth – one of Kyle Busch’s J-G- R teammates – grabbing fourth place.

Rookie Ryan Blaney completed the top five. Pole sitter Martin Truex Junior led a race-high 172 laps and seemed headed for his first victory of the season. But with less than sixty laps remaining, Truex was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop for a loose wheel on his Number-78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota. After returning to the track, Truex could do no better than fourteenth in the final running order.

Harvick’s second-place finish was enough to keep him atop the regular-season standings, though his lead over Busch has shrunk to four points … Through the first eleven races of the season, there have been six race winners: Busch, with a series-leading three victories … Harvick, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin … There were three drivers in the field who consider Kansas Speedway their “home track” and none cracked the top ten Saturday night. Edwards (Columbia, Missouri) finished eleventh, Clint Bowyer (Emporia, Kansas) ran nineteenth and Jamie McMurray (Joplin, Missouri) placed twenty-first.

Gist Qualifies At Heart Championships

Des Moines–The William Penn track and field teams worked around the university’s graduation ceremonies to produce plenty of solid results at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships Friday and Saturday.

The men finished sixth with 62 points, while Baker claimed the league crown with 178.5 points. The women placed 10th (29 points); Grand View was at the top at 138.

Kalob Gist (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) headlined the meet’s activities with a personal best in the shot put. The senior qualified for nationals and won the event with a ‘B’ standard of 51-1. He will join teammate Derek Seddon (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) at nationals in the men’s shot put and is the seventh Statesmen in six different events (nine total qualifiers).

Seddon could not match Gist as an event winner, but did take home a pair of silvers in the discus (169-0) and hammer (173-10).

Fellow thrower Derek Robinson (So., Jenks, Okla., Communications) produced a trio of top-10 performances, including finishing fifth in the discus at 149-3. The sophomore was also ninth in both the shot put (45-0.25) and hammer (149-3).

Another runner-up finish came from CJ Watts (Sr., Rockville, Md., Physical Education). The senior was second in the 400-meter dash in 48.60 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash in 22.36 seconds.

Earl George (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md., Biology) claimed a pair of top-10s as well, including taking fourth in the decathlon with 5,635 points (topped the field in the 100 and shot put). George also finished ninth in the javelin with a distance of 144-11.

Other top-10 showings were recorded by Payton Busch (Jr., Centerville, Iowa, Secondary Education) (fourth, 800-meter run, 1:56.80), Chris Gossett (Sr., Park Forest, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) (fifth, triple jump, 45-5), Charles Hurt (Fr., Gary, Ind., Sociology) (eighth, 400, 51.38), and Tyler Connelly (So., Trenton, Texas, Software Engineering) (10th, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 11:05.46).

The men’s 4×400-meter relay team also earned points by finishing sixth in a time of 3:25.77.

Tarah Alexander (Sr., Cedar, Iowa, Physical Education) and Meaghan Foster (Sr., Centerville, Iowa, Physical Education) were both runners-up on the women’s side. Alexander finished the 800 in 2:18.15, while Foster threw the shot put a length of 43-1.

Kristin Lastovka (Sr., Brooklyn, Iowa, Business Management) was the women’s lone multiple top-10 placer, ending up seventh in the shot put (39-6.5) and 10th in the hammer (128-6).

Vashti Nwagbaraocha (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Exercise Science), in third place (tiebreaker), and Alyssa Phillips (Jr., Gurnee, Ill., Communications), in sixth place, both cleared a mark of 5-1 in the high jump.

Taylor Richardson (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Undecided) was also sixth in the long jump at 17-4.75, while Addison Kepner (Sr., Cincinnati, Iowa, Biology) was ninth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:15.39.

Osky Grad Votroubek Signs With William Penn Basketball

Oskaloosa’s boys’ basketball team is beginning to turn a corner with the influx of talent that is quickly rising the ranks and joining the varsity team in the next couple of years.

One of those players who laid the groundwork has decided to stay close to home to watch what happens next.

On Wednesday, Wade Votroubek signed his letter of intent to play basketball at William Penn University, leaving a bubbling program for one that is on the national stage.

“It was a really easy decision after I knocked out another college,” Votroubek explained. “I see how well of a family this team is and how much success they have and how much I enjoyed watching them. I said, ‘I want to be a part of that.’ And that’s how I made the decision to come here to Penn.”

Votroubek had his signing in the Penn Gymnasium with his parents and Statesmen Head Coach John Henry. Votroubek says he’s excited to play for one of the top collegiate coaches in the region.

“I can see how hard Coach Henry pushes his players to be as good as they possibly can be,” Votroubek said. “I’m looking forward to having him as a coach because he knows how to coach each and every single player.”

Henry is excited to bring the Oskaloosa native into the program, especially for his intangibles.

“First and foremost, Wade is a great kid and a great person from a great family,” said Henry. “I’ve known him for a long time and always thought that he’d be a great addition to our program. [He’s a] character building kid and a hard worker.”

In terms of basketball, Votroubek draws a comparison to another Osky grad who was a big part of recent postseason runs for the Statesmen.

“I don’t like to compare players to other players,” explained Henry. “But the comparison to Erik McGee is inevitable. It’s right there, glaring. And that’s tough for Wade, because McGee was fantastic. But we think it’s something he can live up to. There will be a lot of the same type of attributes that Wade will bring that Erik did.”

McGee was a rotation player his junior and senior seasons for William Penn, helping the Statesmen to the Elite Eight in his junior campaign in 2014. The Oskaloosa alum was notable for his tenacious rebounding and effort, despite only standing 6’4’’.

For now, Votroubek is focused on getting better before joining the team in the fall.

“I definitely need to work on my conditioning right now because I see how fast-paced the games are,” said Votroubek. “[For] weightlifting, I need to build up a little more weight. And definitely shooting, because they want me to play a stretch-4, which means I need to be able to make a jump shot here and there, or a three-pointer here and there.”

Votroubek will look to compete for playing time early in his career, but it won’t be easy, as the Statesmen will have another large group of transfers that are looking to help get Penn back to the National Tournament and even further than the Elite Eight, which is what they accomplished in their first year in NAIA Division I in 2016.

William Penn was ranked 6th in the postseason poll after an outstanding 29-7 campaign. They finished 17-5 in their first season in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, claiming a share of the regular season title, and winning the Heart Conference Tournament.

Next Stop Is Kansas Speedway

On the track, the next stop is Kansas Speedway for Saturday night’s Go Bowling 400, the eleventh race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series. It’s the season’s fourth visit to a mile-and-a-half oval and there have been three different winners so far: Kyle Busch in Texas, Brad Keselowski at Las Vegas and Jimmie Johnson in Atlanta.

Dillard Doubles Up In USMTS North Texas Nationals

GREENVILLE, Texas (May 5) — Cade Dillard captured his second straight United States Modified Touring Series winThursday night in dominating fashion during the 2nd Annual North Texas Nationals at the Superbowl Speedway.

With the event postponed last week because of weather, the 24-year old from Robeline, La., had to wait one week to nab his fourth career USMTS victory and first in the Lone Star State.

Following a first-lap, first-corner melee that collected no fewer than nine race cars, Grant Junghans Memorial USMTS Rookie of the Year contender Tyler Wolff led the opening circuit to record his first-ever lap at the leader of a USMTS event.

But Wolff’s stint was short-lived as fifth-starting Jesse Sobbing muscled his way into the lead on lap 2 with Dillard following in his tire tracks into second place.

For the next 16 laps, the duo raced virtually side by side around the semi-banked 3/8-mile dirt oval before Dillard was finally able to secure the position with 17 laps in the books.

Once out front, the 2014 rookie titlist sailed away from the pack and crossed the finish line with a full straight-away advantage at the end of 42 green flag laps

Last year’s top rookie and winner of the race prior to Dillard’s most recent triumph, Sobbing held on for a solid runner-up result while veteran Scott Drake traded in his crew chief gloves for driver gloves and earned a third-place finish in Joe Duvall’s Club 91 back-up machine.

Rodney Sanders started 13th, climbed into the top five early on, went to the back of the field midway through the race and then clawed his way around the outside to get back to fourth at the end.

Dereck Ramirez started 17th and earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award with his fifth-place effort while Jason Hughes. Max Thomas, Bobby Malchus, Wolff and rookie points leader Brock Bauman rounded out the top 10.

With his $3,000 victory, Dillard moved into second behind Hughes in the Production Jars Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports points battle. Despite missing the event, Ryan Gustin and Zack VanderBeek held on to their third- and fourth-place rankings while Sobbing remains fifth in the standings with two races remaining in the region.

Friday finds the fire-breathing USMTS fighter pilots at the Lubbock Speedway in Lubbock, Texas, for the second time in series history. The first occasion came more than six years ago when Hughes took the win during his run toward his first USMTS national championship.

Spectator tickets are $20, kids ages 6-12 are $5 and children 5 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $35. The pit gate opens at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5, hot laps begin at 7:30 and racing starts at 8.

Joining the USMTS on the card will be Southern Sports Mods, Stock Cars and Street Stocks.

The Lubbock Speedway is a high-banked 1/3-mile dirt oval located south of Lubbock on I-27 to 114th St., then 1.5 miles east. For more information, call (806) 782-5160 or check them out online at www.lubbockspeedway.com.

The swing wraps up Saturday, May 7, with the 7th Annual Amarillo Ambush at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas.
