Krohn conquers USMTS contest at Fairmont

The Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental rocked the Fairmont Raceway Thursday night and Jason Krohn rolled to his first victory of the season.

It was a good night for everybody named Jason as Krohn led Jason Hughes and Jason Cummins to the checkered flag. All three drivers also dominated their respective heat races.

The draw wasn’t kind to Krohn. He started in the back row of his heat but four laps into the race he was in front and won going away.

Of the eight drivers in the main event redraw, he pulled the eighth starting spot. Again he was the leader after just four laps and then controlled the final 26 laps around the fast half-mile dirt oval to record his 32nd career USMTS win.

The win was worth $3,000 to the 43-year-old farmer from nearby Slayton, Minn.

Over the final five laps of the feature, Jason Hughes closed the gap on the leader and made a bid for the lead in the final corner but the 2010 USMTS National Champion came up a bit short and settled for the runner-up paycheck behind the 2007 titlist.

Cummins finished third and came out ahead in a race-long battle with Jesse Sobbing while points leader Rodney Sanders finished fifth after taking the green flag from the 15th starting spot.

Just behind Sanders, 23rd-starting Stormy Scott grabbed the sixth spot with Brent Larson, Casey Arneson, Cory Crapser and Dereck Ramirez rounding out the top 10.

The Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., hosts the USMTS on Friday, Sept. 4, for their traditional standing-room-only stint with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and races to follow.

Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, USRA B-Mods, Pure Stocks and Hornets will also be on the racing card.

Parra Goal Not Enough In 2-1 Loss To CSM

The Statesmen women’s soccer team suffered its first setback of the fall as it lost a 2-1 non-conference matchup with Saint Mary (Neb.) Thursday.

The Statesmen (2-1) were outshot just 10-8 in the defensive battle. Camila Parra (Jr., Brisbane, Australia, Biology) accounted for two of those attempts, including the team’s lone goal.

The junior scored at the 13:51 juncture with AnnaMarie Urps (Fr., Wilton, Calif., Physical Education) assisting on the goal. Urps and Alyce Correia (Jr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) also recorded two shots Thursday.

Adriana Borjon (Jr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) made several nice saves between the pipes–five total–but could not prevent the Flames (1-0) from getting the equalizer in the 19th minute and the eventual winner in the 22nd minute.

Unfortunately, WPU could not rally in the second period as the visitors held a 7-3 edge in shots after intermission.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next weekend, hosting Morningside Friday to start the William Penn Classic. Action will begin at 5 p.m.

Business Executive Named University of Iowa President

The University of Iowa’s governing board has named a corporate management expert with little education experience as the school’s next president.

The Iowa Board of Regents announced the selection Thursday of J. Bruce Harreld, a former senior vice president at IBM and Harvard Business School lecturer.

The choice is likely to stir criticism among professors who see him as unqualified and spark debate over whether business experience is enough to lead a major university.

The regents passed over three candidates with traditional academic experience in favor of the 64-year-old Harreld.

Harreld argues that his experience transforming businesses such as IBM and Kraft Foods would help the university during a time of change in higher education.

He will replace Sally Mason, who retired last month after leading the school since 2007.

“Caring for the Caregiver” Launched In Ottumwa

Milestones, the area agency on aging for southeast Iowa, announces that a new family caregiver support group “Caring for the Caregiver” has been launched in Ottumwa. The group meets monthly and offers both a morning and evening option.

People can choose either September 8 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and again on September 10 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Ottumwa Regional Hospital, Conference Room D, 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“With one in four people taking on additional family caregiver responsibilities, there definitely is a need for information and referrals that will assist individuals caring for aging family and friends,” said Joan Nydle, Family Caregiver Specialist. “Often time people don’t realize that they are a caregiver. Roles vary as in taking their mother to doctor visits or doing grocery shopping and laundry for their father while others might provide 24 hour supervision to a spouse with Alzheimer’s.”

The group will offer conversation, education and support. The meetings are free and refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Joan at Milestones Area Agency on Aging toll free at 1-855-410-6222, ext. 416 or by email at jnydle@milestonesaaa.org.

Sobbing Secures Second USMTS Victory At Hamilton County Speedway

With his victory Wednesday night at the Hamilton County Speedway, Jesse Sobbing made it seven different winners in nine races in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental.

The 33-year-old from Malvern, Iowa, started on the pole but it was Grant Junghans taking control of the main event at the drop of the green flag.

Sobbing snuck past Junghans after the seventh lap with Johnny Scott, Rodney Sanders and Stormy Scott holding down the rest of the first five positions.

With 10 of the 30 laps in the books, Sanders got around Johnny Scott for third and then looked to make the pass on Junghans for second when the two made contact and Sanders wound up facing the wrong direction at the top of turn 2.

While Sanders tagged the rear of the field, Sobbing led the pack back to green. Junghans got over the treacherous cushion in the first corner as Stormy Scott, Ryan Gustin and Johnny Scott raced by on the inside.

Stormy Scott was the next driver to get bitten by the tall cushion as Gustin and three others screamed past. One lap later, Gustin began to bellow heavy smoke and when the caution waved on lap 14 he dove into the pits and out of the hunt with a punctured radiator.

Johnny Scott assumed the runner-up spot and got around Sobbing briefly on the 16th lap, but the race’s third yellow flag put Sobbing back in front for the restart while third-running Cade Dillard went to the tail after coming to a stop atop the second turn.

From that moment on, Sobbing was never challenged again as he and Johnny Scott left the rest of the field far behind and raced to a 1-2 finish with Dan Ebert claiming the third spot.

The $3,000 triumph was the second feature win this season for Sobbing, who clinched the 2015 USMTS rookie title prior to Wednesday’s program.

Sporting a new Sour Patch Kids livery, Cory Crapser was the hard charger of the race, coming from 15th on the starting grid to finish fourth ahead of Jason Hughes.

Sanders, meanwhile, averted disaster and fought his way back to sixth at the checkered flag. Dillard got back up to seventh, Dereck Ramirez passed ten cars to finish eighth, Stormy Scott held on for ninth and veteran Tommy Myer rounded out the top 10.

On Thursday, Sept. 3, the series moves to the legendary Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn., with the Holley Iron Man Series featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods back on the ticket for a second straight night. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps start at 7 and racing begins at 7:15 p.m.

General admission for ages 13 and older is $18, youth ages 6-12 are $5 and children 5 and under are free. Pit passes are $35. Fans can get coupons good for $2 off adult general admission at Casey’s General Stores locations in Fairmont, Sherburn, Trimont, Truman, Welcome, Winnebago and Armstrong in Iowa.

Joe ‘Big Daddy’ Duvall and his No. 91 AMP Energy machine will be greeting fans at 202 E. Blue Earth in Fairmont from 12-2 p.m. Listen to KFMC 106.5 FM to hear live broadcasts from the appearance.

The Fairmont Raceway is a 1/2-mile high-banked dirt oval located 1.0 mile south of I-90 (exit 99) on N. Bixby Rd. (CR 39). For more information call (507) 382-4531 or (507) 382-4531 or visit www.fairmontraceway.com online.

Statesmen Upend H-LG On The Road

The William Penn men’s soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-2 non-conference road victory over Hannibal-LaGrange Wednesday.

The Statesmen (2-1-1) were outshot 19-17 and gave up goals in the 14th and 31st minutes, but did not crumble under the pressure.

Instead, the visitors began to slowly chip away, beginning with Angus Dibley (Fr., Gymea Bay, Australia, Communications) putting away a pass from Jack Kindell-Brown (Fr., Chelmsford, England, Physical Education) at the 40:58 mark. The goal and assist are the first for both at WPU.

Randolph Tamba (Jr., Firestone, Liberia, Information Technology) then knotted the contest at 2-2 in the 68th minute with the help coming from Dibley. Tamba now has two goals this fall.

Finally, less than a minute after the Trojans’ starting goalkeeper was sent off on a red card, Angelo Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) completed the rally with an unassisted goal with only 117 seconds left on the clock. Kelly’s goal is his first; the senior had a team-high six shots.

Max Stamer (Fr., Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education) settled down after the rough start, posting seven saves in the win.

“This was a huge road win against a very strong Hannibal-LaGrange team that should have a good season,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “This was our best performance so far this season; I definitely felt we were the better team in each half.”

“We had really good efforts from Randolph Tamba, Angelo Kelly, and defender Ben Creeger, among others,” Highcock said. “This is another positive step in the right direction.”

Next Up: William Penn remains on the road Sunday traveling to Columbia, Mo. to face Columbia in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
