Thursday Night’s “Sprint Car 101” Forum To Feature Andee Beierle & McKenna Haase

Thursday night’s “Sprint Car 101” forum at the National Sprint Car Museum will feature North Dakota’s Andee Beierle and Iowa’s own McKenna Haase, who is the first female to win a sprint car feature at the legendary Knoxville Raceway. In fact, McKenna has now won two winged 305-cubic-inch sprint car features at the ‘Sprint Car Capital of the World.’ The forum, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18.

Museum executive director Bob Baker said today, “Knoxville has a rich history of women who have raced sprint cars here on a weekly basis, like Andee Beierle, Natalie Sather and Melinda Dumesny, and in special events only, like Judi Bates, Cheryl Glass, Shawna Wilskey and Erin Crocker. Obviously, Erin’s placement of her cars in the Knoxville Nationals A-Main, on two separate occasions, is a huge accomplishment. But McKenna’s two recent ‘305’ feature wins here are big news stories, too. And she is developing a fan following similar to Melinda Dumesny’s back in the day. This should be an entertaining and educational evening with two of the best female racers currently in the country.”

There will be no “Sprint Car 101” forums in July nor August. Those seeking more information on the non-profit museum’s Third Thursday series of “Sprint Car 101” forums should visit www.sprintcarhof.com.

Oskaloosa #1 For First Time in New Rankings

It’s been a long time coming, but Jay Harms is now the coach of the #1 softball team in Class 4A.

The Oskaloosa Indians headline the loaded Class 4A rankings at the top for the first time ever after coming from behind to beat Washington and knocking off two-time defending state champion Dallas Center-Grimes on the road last week.

Oskaloosa is 14-0 this year, but Coach Harms wants his team to stay locked in on what the real prize is at the end of the season: making it back to the state tournament. The Indians are followed closely by future Little Hawkeye opponent Indianola at number two. Carlisle, the team that eliminated Osky from the state tournament last year, is sitting in third. Former #1 Fort Dodge is currently fourth with six losses, all coming to good large school opponents. ADM rounds out the top five. Fairfield checks in at #14 in this week’s rankings.

Norwalk is #7 for the second straight week, one spot ahead of Dallas Center-Grimes, keeping three Little Hawkeye teams in the top eight. Those teams are not alone, however, as Pella Christian has skyrocketed up the Class 2A rankings, now all the way up to #2. PC’s only loss this year so far has come in Oskaloosa to the top-ranked Indians.

Fort Dodge-St. Edmond is still #1. Highland is right behind Pella Christian at #3. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont continues their methodical climb towards the top, now sitting at #4. Emmetsburg rounds out the top five in Class 2A.

In Class 1A, Lynnville-Sully dropped one spot to #7. The Hawks have just two losses this year, but several Class 1A schools have only one loss or are still unbeaten. AGWSR is #1, followed by Akron-Westfield, Marquette Catholic, Woodbury Central, and New London in the top five.

In Class 3A, Mid-Prairie is #8, down one spot from last week. PCM has fallen out of the rankings. Benton Community is #1, sitting at 19-1 already this year. Solon is #2, Greene County is third, Center Point-Urbana is fourth, and East Marshall is fifth in an unchanged top five.

There are no area teams in Class 5A. Johnston is #1 with an unbeaten record. West Des Moines Valley is #2, Iowa City West is third, Waukee is fourth, and Pleasant Valley is fifth.

The new rankings are due to come out this coming Friday evening.

Thatcher snatches USMTS checkers at KRA Speedway

-After leading all 40 laps of the United States Modified Touring Series feature at the KRA Speedway Wednesday evening, Craig Thatcher was standing in victory lane and breathing a sigh of relief.

The USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental made its maiden voyage to the speedplant located in Willmar, Minn., with a big crowd looking on, and despite the fact that Thatcher crossed the start-finish first every time around, the main event was anything but boring.

The track was slick and smooth with a cushion on the high side being the preferred path around the semi-banked 3/8-mile yellow clay oval. Thatcher used his outside front row starting slot to grab the advantage from polesitter Casey Arneson.

Just one lap into the race, a blown engine puked oil onto the track and several cars were involved in an early-race melee including Brent Larson, Travis Saurer, Brady Gerdes, Eric Pember, Troy Girolamo and two-time defending USMTS National Champion Rodney Sanders.

Sanders, who came into the event as the points leader in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region presented by Day Motor Sports, saw his night end early along with Saurer, Gerdes, Pember and Girolamo while Larson continued from the back of the pack.

From that point forward, Arneson shadowed Thatcher at the front of the field with Jesse Glenz, Dan Ebert and Zack VanderBeek in tow.

As the top side of the speedway began to wear thin, things got even racier throughout the field. With four laps to go, Arneson dove underneath Thatcher and nosed ahead of him as the pair entered turn 3, but Arneson’s momentum carried him around into a spin and the race’s final caution flag waved as the USMTS Rookie of the Year contender’s victory celebration plans were dashed.

Back under green, Thatcher cruised the final four laps to capture his third career USMTS trophy with a three-car-length cushion, and a $3,000 paycheck for the Knapp, Wis., veteran.

Ebert used the final restart to move by Glenz for second and 14th-starting Tim Johnson went by both VanderBeek and Glenz to secure the third spot. Glenz and VanderBeek held on for fourth and fifth.

Lucas Schott garnered the sixth spot while Jesse Sobbing advanced 14 positions during the race to finish seventh. Eighth was Joey Jensen, Danny Bayer was ninth and Don Eischens rounded out the top 10.

Although he completed just two laps and finished 23rd on the final score sheet, Sanders maintained his lead in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region points battle while Ebert narrowed the gap to 35 points (439 to 404) with his third top-5 finish in his first five USMTS starts. Larson is third in the rankings with 379 markers, followed by Vanderbeek (374) and Glenz (368).

#2 Osky Softball Takes Out #3 DCG, Baseball Falls in Extras

In a game you heard on the Mahaska Zone Network, the Oskaloosa softball squad took their 13-0 record to the field against the two-time defending state champion Dallas Center-Grimes Fillies looking to get the win and put themselves in good position in the conference. In the top of the first, Oskaloosa plated the first run of the game off starter Allie Boender with an RBI single by Aubrey Miller to score Kylee Silliman. Dallas Center-Grimes would grab their first run of the game in the bottom of the second after a couple of hard hit balls into centerfield. Oskaloosa’s defense would come through, however, throwing out another potential runner at the plate to keep the game tied.

The teams would go back and forth into the top of the seventh inning where the bottom third of the Indian order was due up. Number seven hitter Alexis Groet reached on a fielding error, which brought up number eight hitter Alexis Vroegh with a runner on and no outs. On an 0-1 count after a failed bunt attempt Vroegh made contact and drove the ball over the left-center field fence to give Oskaloosa a 3-1 lead. It’s Vroegh’s first home run of the year. She now has 10 RBI. She entered the contest as Oskaloosa’s leading hitter. Oskaloosa would hold off DCG in the bottom of the seventh, stranding two runners on after right handed pitcher Alexis Groet induced a groundout to record the final out.

The win puts Oskaloosa at 14-0 this season and 3-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Dallas Center-Grimes fell to 9-4 and 2-2 in the conference. The Indians are #2 in the Iowa High School Girls’ Athletic Union rankings this week in Class 4A, and with #1 Fort Dodge having lost four games in the early going and a big win over #3 Dallas Center-Grimes, Head Coach Jay Harms and his team have a legitimate claim to their first #1 ranking in team history. The girls are next in action in a single varsity game against Newton on Friday.

The Oskaloosa baseball team also played in a thriller last night, but fell for the first time this year. The final score was 3-2 with DCG on top, but the game took 12 innings to complete. The Indians are now 7-1 so far this year, and face Newton on the road Friday.
