Local Veterinary Clinic Welcomes New Groomer

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – The Animal Health Center of Oskaloosa recently announced the addition of local Brittany Bedford to the Animal Health Center team. Brittany is originally from Ottumwa and is a professional cosmetologist-turned-pet groomer that will offer full-service dog and cat grooming at our Oskaloosa clinic.

A graduate of the Iowa School of Beauty in Ottumwa, Brittany has 1.5 years of grooming experience and is excited to bring her own creative style to Animal Health Center.

Brittany joined the Animal Health Center of Oskaloosa team in early February and is currently taking appointments at the Oskaloosa office. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 641-673-5525.

“It is always gratifying to add another member to our staff, especially when it is for a service as high in demand as grooming. We always strive to offer the best services here at Animal Health Center of Oskaloosa, and now our services are complete with the addition of Shawna’s extensive grooming knowledge. MHP Provides Soup with a Side of Motivation

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – Mahaska Health Partnership is sponsoring a four-part learning series called, “Soups on Us,” which offers enlightening facts and motivational tips to encourage a healthier lifestyle.

These events are scheduled from Noon to 1 PM on their respective dates (below) at the Mahaska County YMCA conference room. They are free and open to the public. Attendees will receive a free soup lunch, provided by MHP.

According to MHP Registered Dietitian Lea Rice, most people will come to a crossroad at some point in time where they find themselves re-assessing their lifestyle choices. They begin to realize that how they eat and how much sleep they get makes a difference in our quality of life.

“The challenge is knowing what truly has an impact, how to implement changes and then how to stay on track,” Rice explains. “This series will provide simple and practical approaches to meeting our needs.”

“Portion Distortion” will be held on Thursday, March 15. Rice will discuss how large portions lead to eating excess calories. She will also offer simple tips such as eating off smaller plates, using appropriate size glasses and measuring food for portion control. She’ll compare portion sizes from 20 years ago to portion sizes today. Attendees will learn how the portion sizes have grown over the years, leading to an increase in obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

“Hypertension” will be held on Thursday, March 29. Renee Edgar, RN, will be explain how high blood pressure, or hypertension, is sometimes called the “silent killer” because it does not cause symptoms unless it is severely high. Edgar will also explain how major organ damage can occur without the person’s knowledge. Participants will also learn steps they can take to lower their blood pressure.

“Healthy Sleep” will be held on Thursday, April 12. MHP Polysomnographer and Sleep Center Coordinator Kai Schwab, RPSGT, RST, will explain why sleep is important for a healthy lifestyle and what the new recommendations are for the amount of sleep needed. You will learn about common sleep problems (insomnia, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome) as well as current treatments.

“Stop Diabetes in Its Tracks” will be held on Thursday, April 26. MHP Diabetes Educator Sharon Ferguson, RN, CDE and Rice will delve into the impact of family history, pre-diabetes and diabetes. Learn how to make simple lifestyle changes that will have a huge impact on your health.

She’s about 5 1/2 months old – and the only kitten remaining from strays that came in last season. But we don’t understand why she hasn’t found a home yet… because Maple is a sweet and curious kitten. Would you get a look at those eyes? She’s perfect!

Benefit Dinner for the Family of Deziray Harbour

On March 22, Deziray Harbour will go in for the first part of her two-part brain surgery. This benefit on March 17 is to help the parents of Deziray with expenses of traveling, possible hotel room stay, and food while she is in the hospital in Iowa City. The benefit will be held at the Iowa National Guard Armory in Oskaloosa from 5:00 – 9:00 PM. There will be homemade beef and noodles with mashed potatoes as well as desserts. There will also be a silent auction and several other ways to help out. DJ Brady Pace has volunteered his time for music.

Next ‘Eggs & Issues’ to Feature Area Directors

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – Eggs & Issues, a forum hosted by the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group, will again be held at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa this Saturday, March 10 at 8:30 AM.

The panel for this week’s Eggs & Issues will consist of Executive Director of MCDG Tom Flaherty, Main Street Director Emily Brown, and Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group Director Ann Smith. According to a news release from the OACDG, the three will share updates about what is going on in Mahaska County and Oskaloosa. After the three are done sharing their respective updates, questions from the public will be welcomed by special moderator Andy McGuire. Free coffee will be provided by MidWest One Bank.

The final Eggs & Issues for 2018 will be Saturday, March 24 at Smokey Row from 8:30 – 9:30 AM. The panel will consist of anyone who is running for an elected office in the community, county or district.

Fight Muscular Dystrophy with Team Dalton

On Wednesday, March 7, join Dalton Showers at the Oskaloosa Fairgrounds inside of the DVA building from 11 AM – 6 PM to help end muscular dystrophy. Dalton is a 15-year-old that suffers from muscular dystrophy, specifically CMT. His goal is to raise $500 to help end muscular dystrophy and all proceeds will go to Team Dalton. There will a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle, pork sandwiches and chips. There will be signs directing towards the building.

Oskaloosa Community School District Board Meeting

The Oskaloosa Community School District will have a meeting of the Board of Directors on March 8 at 7:30 PM in the George Daily Auditorium Board Room. The main topic at hand will be to consider approval of profile and documents for the search of a Superintendent.

Scammers Again Targeting MidAmerican Energy Customers

Residential, commercial customers report flurry of imposter calls seeking immediate payment

(DES MOINES, Iowa) – Residential and commercial customers of MidAmerican Energy today report receiving calls from imposters demanding immediate payment on behalf of MidAmerican Energy.

Imposter scam callers threaten to shut off power unless the customer makes an immediate payment over the phone with a prepaid debit card.

Scammers are persistent and aggressive and can:

  • Spoof caller-ID to make the call appear as if it is coming from the utility or any number.
  • Require customers to make an immediate payment using a prepaid card (such as a Green Dot card).
  • Threaten disconnection if the customer doesn’t pay immediately over the phone.

Customers who receive a suspicious call should hang up, and report it to their local police department or sheriff’s office. MidAmerican does not call customers demanding immediate payment by phone.

Once you’ve reported the call to law enforcement, report it to MidAmerican Energy at the number on your monthly utility bill, or call 888-427-5632. Don’t call the number that appears on your caller-ID display.

To check your billing status, call MidAmerican. Or, access your billing records online through My Account on the company’s website at www.midamericanenergy.com.

Customers should follow these steps to stay safe:

  • Don’t pay immediately by phone, especially if you did not initiate the call.
  • Remember, MidAmerican Energy accepts many forms of payment, but won’t demand a specific payment method by phone.
  • Never give out personal or financial information when someone calls you. Do not share credit card, bank, prepaid money card or even gift card account numbers when you receive a call. Sergeant Bluff-Luton Poses Interesting Challenge to Osky Boys

The State Boys’ Basketball Tournament begins next week at Wells Fargo Arena and for the first time since 1996, the Oskaloosa Indians will be present.

The hype for this team all season has been State-Or-Bust, but now that they’re there, the Osky faithful would love to see them grab a win to move one step closer to a state championship.

It has been a while since the Indians have been at state, but their first opponent overcame an even longer drought last year during an improbable run.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton ended a 77-year state tourney drought in 2017 as they entered the action at Wells Fargo Arena with a record of 15-9. Their first opponent was Little Hawkeye Conference team Pella, who came into the tournament as the #3 seed.

Those facts are eerie, as SB-L comes in once again on a roll, entering The Well with a 15-9 record. They are once again playing a Little Hawkeye Conference team with over 20 wins in Oskaloosa, who happens to be the #3 seed.

Oskaloosa hopes the identical comparisons stop there, as the Warriors upset Pella in the quarterfinals last season, 66-55, ending the state title hopes for the Dutch.

Six seniors have departed from Sergeant Bluff-Luton since last year, including the two leading scorers from that magical run. SB-L eventual would lose in the state championship game to Cedar Rapids Xavier, 54-49.

The hunger to get back along with excellent play down the stretch has led to another surprising state appearance for a team that hadn’t broken through the glass ceiling for multiple generations.

Despite a fairly modest 15-9 record, analytical site BCMooreRankings.com has SB-L ranked 9th in Class 3A, sporting the 6th toughest schedule of all 3A teams. Their participation in the rugged and large Missouri River Athletic Conference certainly helped them in the postseason.

By contrast, Oskaloosa goes into the tournament ranked #4 by BCMoore with just the 31st toughest schedule in the state. The Indians have played well against new foes, however, as their only loss against a team they were playing for the first time was on the road against Dubuque Wahlert in overtime back on January 13th.

If you’re curious, the top three teams ahead of Oskaloosa in the BCMoore rankings are Cedar Rapids Xavier, Mount Pleasant, and Glenwood, all of whom are at state. Xavier and MP are the #1 and #2 seed, while Glenwood is seeded 4th.

The game is slated to begin at 4:30 PM on Tuesday, March 6th. You can hear the broadcast from Wells Fargo Arena starting around 3:30 PM on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and the KMZN mobile app. Emery Songer and Doug DeKock will be calling the action.

The winner of the battle between Osky and SB-L will move into the state semifinals Thursday afternoon against either Mount Pleasant or Waverly-Shell Rock.
