On this day in 1974, John Denver recorded his famous “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” before a crowd in Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheatre. The song was originally recorded on Back Home Again, but this live version became a number one hit and was released on his 1975 album An Evening with John Denver.

On this day in 1988, John Denver caused a stir by offering the Soviet Union ten million dollars to let him travel into space on their shuttle. Previously in 1985, Denver had passed NASA’s rigorous physical exam and was in line for a space flight, being a finalist for the first citizen’s trip in space in 1986, but he was not chosen.
