STORMS HAMMER OTTUMWA

Storms hammer Ottumwa

A powerful storm blew through southern Iowa on Thursday, damaging trees and drenching the area.

Severe thunderstorm warning marched across the Ottumwa area as the storm moved east. It had formed early Thursday in Nebraska, and held together as it made its way across Iowa. At least one tree in Ottumwa was uprooted by the storm and authorities responded to reports of downed power lines as well.

Information from Alliant Energy indicates thousands were without power after the storm.  Areas south of the Des Moines River in Ottumwa turned into a warren of closed and blocked streets. Limbs blocked roads and took down some power lines. Several areas were without power, and the fire department responded to a fire on South Davis Street at the same time. It was not immediately clear whether that fire was related to the storm.

Officially, 0.42 inches of rain was measured in Ottumwa, but radar estimates suggested an inch may have fallen on some areas. Temperatures plummeted, dropping as much as 13 degrees as the rain-cooled air moved through.

Sirens sounded as the storm reached Ottumwa. There was no tornado, but the city also uses the sirens to warn of strong winds.
