SEPTEMBER 6TH: ON THIS DAY

September 6th: On this day

On this day in 1975, Glen Campbell started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’, his first #1 after 13 Top 40 hits. It made #4 in the UK. Written by Larry Weiss, Campbell first heard the song on the radio and, during a tour of Australia decided to learn the song. Soon after his return to the United States, Campbell went to Al Coury’s office at Capitol Records, where he was approached about “a great new song” — “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
