Michael McDaniels Update

On September 12th, Jasper County received a call from a family who indicated they were attempting to locate their family member Michael W. McDaniels, who appeared to be missing. At 1853 hours Jasper County met with the family members at the location of the call which was near the Metz Bridge on the South Skunk River SW of Newton, near the intersection of Neptune St. and S. 44th Ave W. During this investigation, Deputies and family located Mr. Mc Daniels fishing items on the bank of the river and the vehicle that he drives.
At that time the area was checked as well as possible. At sunrise on 9-13-2016, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office along with several other agencies conducted an extensive search of the area, including the river. Assisting agencies included Grinnell Fire, Newton Fire, Colfax Fire, Department of Natural Resources, and the Jasper County K-9 search dogs.

The Jasper County Emergency Response Unit was set up as command. Story County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, as well as the Iowa State Patrol air wing and Mercy Air Care helicopter were contacted for assistance in the search.

At noon Tuesday, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reached out to the public via social media and local press.

At approximately 1500 hours, the search was concluded for the day and family members were updated on the current status.

Wednesday, 9-14-16, command staff reconvened to discuss options in the continuing investigation of the whereabouts of Mr. McDaniels.
