June 16th: On This Day

On this day in 1981, The Oak Ridge Boys’ “Elvira” was Certified Gold by the RIAA. The song is off of the band’s album¬†Fancy Free.¬†The title of the song was inspired not by the name of a woman, but by the name of a street in East Nashville, Tennessee.

“Elvira” quickly climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it their biggest pop hit.

“Elvira” has since been Certified Platinum.
