June 16th: On This Day

On this day in 1981, The Oak Ridge Boys’ “Elvira” was Certified Gold by the RIAA. The song is off of the band’s album Fancy Free. The title of the song was inspired not by the name of a woman, but by the name of a street in East Nashville, Tennessee.

“Elvira” quickly climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it their biggest pop hit.

“Elvira” has since been Certified Platinum.
