Authorities say a 16-year-old suspected of escaping a mental health facility has also been accused of assaulting a police officer in Des Moines.

Police say the teen left the facility Wednesday and was being followed by staff when he walked up to an officer and punched him in the head.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports the officer was able to detain the teen. Nearby witnesses also assisted the officer.

The 16-year-old was later taken to a juvenile holding center. He faces an assault charge.

The officer received a cut above his eye and was treated at a hospital.
