Freedom Rock Finds Home at Caldwell Park

Mahaska County Freedom Rock organizers were elated July 14 when Bill and Ray’s Towing placed the rock that will be painted in its resting place at the site of the new Caldwell Park. The 11-ton rock will honor veterans of all conflicts. Caldwell Park will be the site of the new nature center and other outlets for Mahaska Conservation. The Freedom Rock rests atop the hill at the east end near Mahaska Veterinary Clinic.

The project, spearheaded by American Legion Auxiliary and a number of support organizations, will bring a rock to be painted by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II to life. Sorensen’s goal is to have a Freedom Rock in each county in Iowa. The original rock is located in Adair County one m le south of Interstate 80 at exit 86.

The rock came from near Eddyville and was donated by Ben Shinn of Eddyville.

Fundraising to cover costs of flagpoles, lighting, benches, landscaping, the painting and other expenses continue. For more information on how to participate or on the project itself, contact Kim Dixon, 2102 263rd Street, Oskaloosa or call 641-673-0220.
