On this day in 2003, Johnny Cash made his last ever live performance when he appeared at the Carter Ranch. Before singing “Ring of Fire”, Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written shortly before taking the stage: “The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.” Cash died on Sept 12th of this year.

Thai youth soccer league found alive after being lost in a cave for 10 days

Rescuers in northern Thailand on Tuesday raced against time and an ominous monsoon season to rescue a youth soccer team trapped in a partially flooded cave in advance of heavy rains forecast later this week.

Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said at least some of the players can’t swim, further complicating the arduous task of rescue. He said the 12 kids, ages 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach might need to don scuba gear for parts of their escape.

The Thai rainy season is peaking, and long periods of persistent downpours can be expected into November. Water levels in the cave complex are expected to rise.

“The evacuation must speed up,” Anupong told the Bangkok Post. “Diving gear will be used. If the water rises, the task will be difficult. We must bring the kids out before then.”  The team would have to move through narrow parts of the cave by themselves. Massive pumps are flushing some of the water out of the cave, reducing the amount of time the dive equipment would be necessary.

“Diving is not easy. Those who have never done it will find it difficult, because there are narrow passages in the cave,” Anupong said. “They must be able to use diving gear. If the gear is lost at any moment, it can be dangerous to life.”

The team ventured into the cave after soccer practice on June 23. A team of British and Thai divers, backed by an international rescue group found the children and their coach Monday.

Video released early Tuesday showed the boys in their soccer uniforms sitting on a dry area inside the cave above the water, their faces illuminated by a spotlight. The video, along with pictures taken by rescuers, buoyed the spirits of families awaiting reunions at the cave’s main entrance.

Dan + Shay Double Up With No. 1 Self-Titled Album & No. 1 Single, “Tequila”

Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney of duo Dan + Shay doubled up with dual No. 1s this week.

The duo’s self-titled album debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with more than 200,000 equivalent units sold. In addition, the album’s lead single, “Tequila,” topped both the Billboard Country Airplay chart and the Mediabase chart.

“We felt this was the perfect project to make a self-titled record,” said Shay. “This album represents who we are and where we’re going. We’re so proud of every song and can’t wait to see where it takes us. It takes an army to have a successful release. I’m so thankful to our team for letting us make the album we wanted, and I’m thankful to my partner in crime, Dan Smyers, for making the record we needed. The biggest thank you goes to our fans—we couldn’t make music with no one to listen to it. We love you all and we hope you love this record as much as we do.”

“Years and years of work went into the making of Dan + Shay, and to see such a gigantic fan response to the release has been our most fulfilling career experience to date,” added Dan. “It’s unbelievable that ‘Tequila’ has simultaneously provided us yet another milestone. We’re so thankful for the support country radio has shown us since the beginning and, still to this day, there is no better feeling than seeing one of our songs sitting at No. 1 on the chart. Luckily, with a song title like ‘Tequila,’ the celebratory drink of choice has chosen itself!”

“Tequila” is the duo’s fourth No. 1 single, following previous chart-toppers “Nothin’ Like You,” “From the Ground Up” and “How Not To.”

Flash Flooding in Des Moines and surrounding areas

For a short while Saturday night,  Des Moines-area residents enjoyed the sudden temperature drop that provided relief to the day’s heat and humidity.  In an instant, the skies dumped on parts of Polk County with nearly 9 inches of rain in less than four hours.

The rush of water caused chaos in the area : A duplex exploded in Urbandale; flooding displaced dozens of people; businesses were flooded by water; and first-responders were out throughout the night rescuing people stranded in vehicles and flooded buildings.  The flooding resulted in the death of 66-year-old Larry Cotlar, a local sportscaster, who got out of his stalled van and was swept away by the fast-moving water.

The result was “catastrophic flooding” throughout Polk County, reported Kelsey Angle, a National Weather Service meteorologist.  Areas near Fourmile Creek and Walnut Creek sustained the most damage, said A.J. Mumm, director of Polk County Emergency Management. Both creeks set record-high crests.

In 2008, Des Moines and other parts of Iowa experienced historic flooding caused by the melting of the winter’s heavy snowfall and above average rain that fell beginning Memorial Day weekend. The weather caused flooding and levee breaches in Des Moines.
