Governor Reynolds assessed the tornado damage at Vermeer
Governor Kim Reynolds was in Pella Friday afternoon to see first-hand the damage caused by Thursday afternoon’s tornado at Vermeer Manufacturing. “Truly, truly just a miracle that we had no fatalities and the amount of damage that we see here. To think that we had 400 customers on site. I think that says volumes about your team and how they were able to respond very quickly to the tornado and to make sure that people were safe and getting taken care of.”
Two of Vermeer’s eight buildings were totaled by the tornado. Vermeer President and CEO Jason Andringa tells the North Coast Network how the damage will affect production. “At this point, we are quite optimistic that we may be able to get some of our production going again next week, starting early in the week. In the near term, we think we’re going to be able to ramp up even more production. Andringa says the building where parts are stored was not affected by the tornado.
In all, seven people were treated for minor injuries at Pella Regional Medical Center.
Reynolds has also been checking on tornado damage in Bondurant and Marshalltown. The National Weather Service says at least five tornadoes hit lowa on Thursday. Meteorologist Jeff Johnson says it will take days to determine the full number of tornadoes and how strong they were. The National Weather Service says the tornado was an EF-3, with sustained winds of 144 miles an hour. Several buildings at Vermeer had significant damage and the company’s waste management facility was destroyed.
Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella will be open for business today following Thursday’s tornado. Team members on all shifts in Corporate, Plant 1, Plant 2 (front office and production), Plant 3 (front office and production) and the Parts Center should report to work today beginning with first shift. Team members on all shifts in front office and production of Plants 4, 5, 6 and 7, ACS/Test, Vermeer Underground Technologies and the Global Pavilion should not report to work unless contacted by their manager.

July 20th: On this day

Zac Edington Live in-studio this morning
Zac Edington was LIVE in-studio with Steve Shettler this morning. Edington considers his style more “country rock” than anything else. Zac is a 2004 graduate of Marshall, an eastern Illinois high school, who’s trying to make it big in country music. A few years ago, those exact words could have been written about 2004 Paris graduate Brett Eldredge, who hit the national scene in 2010 and became a CMT Music Award winner in 2015. He currently lives in Nashville and hopes he can follow in those unique footsteps.
Edington admitted that he thinks about the success of Eldredge, who attended his rival school at the same time, quite often. “I’ve never met Brett,” he said, “but I actually saw him running with his dog while I was sitting there [at a Nashville restaurant] eating tacos.”
Back in high school, the 6-foot-4 Edington was more concerned about football than music. He played offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Lions, who qualified for the Illinois playoffs all four seasons he was there. But at 17, Edington’s attention shifted to the bass guitar. A school buddy, Dallas Gustafson, got him into a three-piece band called Open Road, which lasted about eight years before members parted ways. “Then the drummer from the band [Jason Nebergall], we started a dual-acoustic side project [Broken Road] that played at different places around Illinois and Indiana, still kinda the local thing,” Edington recalled. “We used to play at the Eagles in Terre Haute and we played over at what used to be the Dawg House [now Ripley’s] … just a bunch of smaller places around the area.”
Right before he turned 30, Edington moved to Dickson, Tenn., about 40 miles from Nashville. Then he decided to end the daily commutes by moving to Nashville in September 2016.
Vermeer recovering after tornado damage
Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella is closed today as company officials assess the damage from a tornado yesterday afternoon. Around 4:15pm, there was a reported tornado touchdown at Vermeer. Andringa: “This has been a momentous afternoon and we’ve had a lot of damage at Vermeer. Seven people were treated for minor injuries at Pella Regional Health Center and released. Area law enforcement has received several calls about a stabbing and sexual assault—but it never happened. The Oskaloosa Indians end their season
Oskaloosa High’s baseball season ended Wednesday night. Bondurant-Farrar beat the Indians 5-0 in the sub-state game in Alleman. Home runs by Jordan Collins and Nyanti Gehrke (a 3-run shot) supplied the offense for the Blue Jays. And Indians Coach Clint Gingerich complimented Bondurant-Farrar pitcher Quinn Waterhouse. The lefty threw a 3-hit shutout with five strikeouts.
“Waterhouse did a really nice job. I thought we had them prepared. I think we did, I think we just struggled at the plate. He hit his spots really well. I think you’ve got to tip your cap to the pitcher. It’s like game 7 out here every night in district play. It’s just one game. That’s baseball we ran into a tough pitcher and didn’t square him enough to put some runs on the board.”

“District champs again and last 16 teams in the state to be playing tonight (Wednesday). That’s a great accomplishment in Class 3A. It hurts right now, and it hurts in all of our guys and it should hurt. It hurts because we care; it hurts because of all the time we’ve invested. We start throwing in February, the kids played spring ball, they’re playing fall ball, the amount of time they’ve put into this it should hurt and it
it big picture-wise, there’s a lot of teams that aren’t playing tonight. And we were one of them that was…and that’s exciting and I’m proud of the guys and I’d take this team over any team in the state. The way that they work, the way that they care for each other, the families they come from. They’re great kids, they’re top-notch kids and I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished this season.”
This was Clint Gingerich’s final game as Oskaloosa baseball coach. He’s moving to a new job. But he leaves the Indians baseball program in great shape.
“I think it comes down to the kids and they’ve done a nice job. They’ve responded and people notice that Oskaloosa baseball is very competitive. Umpires see it, opposing teams see it, opposing fans see it and that’s exciting for our kids. When we go play teams, they throw their best at us. They want to beat us and they know it’s going to be a good game. It’s exciting and it’s been a blessing to be a part of this, to work with these individuals, these young men, watch them grow. And I’m excited to continue to watch this program grow in the right direction.”
