The RVTV event in Ottumwa Friday night was a huge success

RVTV, along with KBOE’s own Steve Shettler, Jill Dursky and Sheri Walker, was at Bridge View Center in Ottumwa Friday night from 4-11pm.  This pre-game party, the day before the Iowa vs. Iowa State football game, featured sportscasters from WHO Channel 13 including Keith Murphy, John Sears, Michael Admire and Chief Meteorologist Ed Wilson.  The statewide tour by the sportscasters helps amp up excitement about one of Iowa’s most contentious football matchups, Iowa versus Iowa State.  DJ Hans Wilz was there pumping out party jams and then live music was provided by Marshall County Hangmen from 8-10:30 pm.  Food and drinks were available as well as free pork chops on a stick by JBS Pork of Ottumwa. There was also a variety of live competitions between Iowa and Iowa State fans all night including The Fight Song battle, tug-of-war on the bridge and a football toss contest.

Oskaloosa Library wants to expand their reading garden

The Oskaloosa Public Library wants to use land recently donated to the City to expand its reading garden. Library Director Marion Gaughan talks about the project.

“We would like to expand the reading garden that is currently there, but we would like a more green space reading garden…so that we have the ability to host programs there.  We don’t really have a green space, so we’d like to have a green space.”

The new reading garden would include a large oval lawn.  It would be built on the southeast corner of the block where the Oskaloosa Public Library now stands.  The project is expected to cost around $243,000. Gaughan says the money would be raised through private fund-raising.

Four dead after gunman opens fire in downtown Cincinnati

Four people were killed Thursday when a gunman opened fire at an office building downtown. Police said that officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter, but it was not immediately clear if they shot him or he killed himself. City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld tweeted that five people had been shot, including the gunman, and that police had secured the scene. Sittenfeld said the situation remained fluid.   No motive for the carnage had immediately been determined.  “Terrible shooting incident in the heart of our city this morning,” Sittenfeld tweeted. “Multiple shot, and tragically there are fatalities. Details still emerging. Pray for our city.”  A phalanx of police officers and ambulances rushed to the scene at the Fifth Third Center, a 30-story building in the heart of downtown, during the morning rush. Four victims were transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, hospital officials said.

A witness said he heard up to 15 shots fired. Leonard Cain was going back inside the bank when someone alerted him to the shooting. He said a woman was also walking into the bank and people tried to get her attention, but she had headphones on. “She walked in the door and he shot her,” Cain said.  The building is located in Fountain Square, a hub for entertainment and dining in the city.
