Man accused of killing ISU student has an extensive criminal record
Court documents from 15 court cases involving Collin Richards, the man accused of killing Iowa State University student Celia Barquin Arozamena, dating back to 2014 have been reviewed, many of them connected to violent crimes. Over the years some of the crimes Richards has been convicted of includes harassment, theft, and domestic abuse. The harassment case stems from an incident in January 2015 where he threatened to shoot up a gas station in Guthrie County after clerks there claim they caught him trying to steal energy drinks. His sentence for the crime was 90 days in jail.
It was just a month later Richards found himself in front of judge again for stealing a car. The end result was a two year prison sentence suspended, so no time in jail. Richards would be back in jail again in September 2016 after being convicted of stealing tobacco and beer from the same gas station he had previously threatened to shoot up. That again got him a suspended prison sentence and time served for 31 days in jail. Richards most recent conviction is from July for public intoxication. He was ordered to pay a fine. Richards was also on probation for several of these offenses but never was convicted of a probation violation.
Site in Oskaloosa approved for a new hotel
The Oskaloosa City Council has approved a site plan for a new hotel. Monday night, the Council approved plans for a Fairfield Inn and Suites to be built at the southwest corner of Highway 92 and Gateway Drive. Oskaloosa City Manager Michael Schrock says the new hotel is “a tremendous investment in our community.”
“We’re excited. It’s going to be a tremendous improvement for our community and provide a nice hospitality option in town that doesn’t necessarily exist today.”
The Fairfield Inn and Suites would include 76 rooms plus a meeting room that could hold up to 80 people. Schrock said he didn’t know how many new jobs the hotel would create. The group building the hotel hopes to break ground by the end of the year, with the goal of being open one year from now.
Kim Jong Un agrees to dismantle main nuke site if US agrees to takes steps also
U.S. President Donald Trump says “we’re making tremendous progress” with North Korea, after an inter-Korean summit offered some apparent concessions from the North on its weapons program. Trump told reporters Wednesday that “we had very good news” out of the summit, where leader Kim Jong Un promised to dismantle a rocket launch site and also agreed to dismantle its main nuclear site if the U.S. takes unspecified corresponding measures. Trump didn’t indicate in his brief remarks whether the U.S. would be willing to take further steps to encourage North Korean action on denuclearization. However, he claimed credit for quelling the tensions that had escalated sharply during the first year of his presidency before his own summit with Kim in June.
North Korea has conducted no nuclear and missile tests since late last year. The leaders of North and South Korea announced a wide range of agreements Wednesday which they said were a major step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula. But the premier pledge on denuclearization contained a big condition, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stating he’d permanently dismantle his main nuclear complex only if the United States takes unspecified corresponding measures. Wednesday that “we had very good news” out of the summit, where leader Kim Jong Un promised to dismantle a rocket launch site and also agreed to dismantle its main nuclear site if the U.S. takes unspecified corresponding measures.
