Mahaska County EMA/911 Board met last Thursday night

The Mahaska County EMA/911 Board met for almost three hours Thursday night with much discussion and no action taken on a new radio communications system.  At a special meeting earlier this week, the County Board of Supervisors invited Raycom of Marshalltown to make a bid for the system.  Supervisors say they did this because they only had one bid.  That led to back and forth discussion between EMA/911 board members and County Board Member Mark Groenendyk about the County Board taking the lead on the project.  During the meeting, there was also a performance review of EMA/911 Administrator Jamey Robinson in open session.  During this week’s County Board meeting, Groenendyk suggested Robinson withheld information from Motorola, specifically a letter from Motorola saying they weren’t planning to bid on the radio system.  Robinson was strongly defended Thursday by Mahaska County Sheriff Russell Van Renterghem, New Sharon Mayor Dustin Hite and a dispatcher who spoke during public comments. The EMA/911 Board voted to approve Robinson’s performance….with Groenendyk abstaining.

Oskaloosa with the big win over Knoxville Friday night

Oskaloosa’s Cole Henry is making massive re-writes to the football team’s record book.  In Friday night’s 42-7 win at Knoxville, the senior quarterback completed 19 of 24 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns.  The 338 yards is the second most in a game in school history, behind Ethan Arnold’s 402 against Fairfield in 2016.  For the season, Henry has now completed 131 passes, which breaks Jon Eveland’s mark of 121 from 2008.  Henry is also on the verge of breaking Oskaloosa records for yardage in a season (Arnold, 1969 in 2016) and touchdown passes in a season (Arnold, 21 in 2016).  He has a chance to set new records Friday night when the Indians play at South Tama County.  We’ll have that game on KMZN and the No Coast Network.

US, Russian astronauts safe after emergency landing

International Space Station commander Alexander Gerst says he is grateful two astronauts are doing well after an exceedingly rare and harrowing launch abort ended their journey toward the orbiting laboratory.  Gerst, a European Space Agency astronaut from Germany, tweeted from orbit after the failed launch: “Spaceflight is hard. And we must keep trying for the benefit of humankind.”  He thanked the rescue force that arrived quickly to retrieve American Nick Hague and Russian Alexei Ovchinin from their capsule after an emergency landing. The capsule was jettisoned from a three-stage booster rocket that failed two minutes after liftoff.  Hague and Ovchinin were supposed to spend the next half year aboard the International Space Station.  Gerst wrote that the mishap shows “what an amazing vehicle the Soyuz is, to be able to save the crew from such a failure.”

A booster rocket failed less than two minutes after launching an American and a Russian toward the International Space Station on Thursday, forcing their emergency — but safe — landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.  It was the latest in a recent series of failures for the troubled Russian space program, which is used by the U.S. to carry its astronauts to the station.

Phone call scam alert

Imagine getting a phone call from the Iowa State Police telling you they’ve seized a vehicle with drugs inside and that vehicle is registered to you.  Apparently, that’s been happening recently—and it’s a scam. The Iowa Department of Public Safety (and that’s the official name, not “Iowa State Police”) says they’ve had several reports of those calls coming from the 712 area code.  If you get a call like that, call your local police.  The Department of Public Safety also reminds you to not give out personal information or financial information to anyone who calls.
