The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors wants to talk further with the County’s compensation board before voting on pay increases for elected officials. At Tuesday morning’s (1/22) meeting, the County Board discussed various proposals. Board Chairman Mark Groenendyk said he favored a three percent across the board increase for elected officials, while Supervisor Steve Parker favored a 5.3 percent increase for the County Sheriff, a four percent raise for the County Attorney and smaller raises for the remaining elected officials. The County Board voted to table the matter and ask the compensation board to meet and have a proposal ready for the County Board to consider by their next meeting on February 4. But four of the six members of the compensation board must agree to hold a meeting, so there’s no guarantee the County Board will get a new proposal.

Dead steer found, animals rescued in Monroe County

Animal rescue officials say they’ve found a dead steer and rescued seven other ailing animals from a rural Monroe County property. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says in a news release that its response team helped Monroe County officials rescue three horses, one burro, a steer and two dogs that were left in freezing weather with no food, water or shelter. One dead steer was found on the property. The group says two of the horses were underweight and the steer was suffering pain from neglected hooves and a hind injury. The burro’s halter had been on so long it had rubbed the hair away and had to be cut off. Charges are pending against the animals’ owner.
Oskaloosa basketball updates

Oskaloosa High’s boys’ and girls’ basketball games at Newton yesterday (1/24) were postponed because of the weather. The girls’ game will be made up Saturday (1/26) with the JV game at 3 and the Varsity at 4:30. The boys’ game will be made up on Tuesday, February 12 with ninth grade starting at 4:45pm, followed by junior varsity and then the Varsity game at 7:30.
Oskaloosa’s boys will be in action Saturday afternoon taking on Bishop Miege of Kansas City in the Quincy High School Shootout in Quincy, Illinois. We’ll have the game on KBOE-FM along with video on KBOEradio.com. Coverage starts at 3:45 with the tipoff at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon.
Here’s Friday’s (1/25) high school basketball schedule, weather permitting: Our Game of the Week on KMZN AM and FM has Montezuma at North Mahaska. The girls’ matchup should be a great one with Montezuma ranked third in the state in Class 1A girls and North Mahaska 12th. Montezuma’s boys are ranked second in the state in 1A boys. KMZN’s coverage starts at 5:45 with the pregame show, then the girls’ game at 6 and the boys’ game at 7:30.

State Fair officials announce music lineups, ticket sales

The Nebraska State Fair recently named the 2019 concert lineup and revealed a new ticket option for State Fair concerts. Artists will be “bundled” by genre under one ticket price which includes gate admission, allowing concert-goers to save big.
“We are bringing fans the concerts they asked for under three genres: hot country, rock and red dirt,” said Lori Cox, State Fair executive director, in a provided statement. “This new ticket format, combined with the largest all-star lineup in decades, is sure to be a State Fair experience no one will forget.”

General admission bundles are $79 and include gate admission ($12 value).That means each concert ticket is just $26, offering fans a 60 percent savings compared to past concert prices. A limited number of single tickets will be sold later this spring for $48 each and will also include gate admission. All seats are first come, first served.
Pit pass bundles are available for $129 and include gate admission. These tickets offer fans a standing-room-only experience at the front of the stage. Single ticket pit passes are not available for purchase. For all bundles, fans will receive three tickets for the concerts and three separate tickets for gate admission.
“In my career working in the fair industry, I’ve never seen something as revolutionary as this,” said Chelsey Jungck, chief of entertainment for the State Fair, in a statement. “You can split your tickets up among friends if you can’t attend all three shows. We hope people will find the magic in the bundle!”
Bundles go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at the new State Fair box office, located on the first floor of the Nebraska Building on the fairgrounds. Hours of operation will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. Tickets for all shows can also be purchased at etix.com and statefair.org. All concerts will be held indoors at the Heartland Event Center on the fairgrounds. Concerts will start at 8 p.m.
Carrie Underwood Welcomes Second Baby Boy

Very early on Monday morning (Jan. 21), Carrie Underwood welcomed baby Jacob Bryan to her growing family.
Underwood’s team posted on her behalf on Wednesday about the new addition, Jacob Bryan Fisher.
“Jacob Bryan Fisher entered the world in the wee hours of the morning on Monday…his mom, dad and big brother couldn’t be happier for God to trust them with taking care of this little miracle,” they wrote in the social media post with a trio of photos from the delivery room. In each picture, someone from the family is treasuring time with the baby boy: Underwood, her husband Mike Fisher, and their 3-year-old Isaiah.
“Our hearts are full, our eyes are tired and our lives are forever changed,” they said. “Life is good.”
General Mills recalls some flour over salmonella concerns

General Mills is voluntarily recalling some bags of its Gold Medal Unbleached Flour because of salmonella concerns. The 5-pound (2.26 kilograms) bags have a “better if used by” date of April 20, 2020 and the UPC code 000-16000-19610-0. Customers should discard the product.

The company says it discovered salmonella during sampling of the product, but it has not received “any direct consumer reports of confirmed illnesses.” General Mills says all other types of Gold Medal Flour are not affected.
Salmonella can lead to fever, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain.

Local high school baseball coaches honored

A couple of area high school baseball coaches were honored over the weekend at the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s annual banquet in Cedar Rapids. Tom Hallgren of EBF was recognized for 15 years as a head coach and Lee Crawford of Sigourney received a 20 year service award. And Ryan Hodges of Centerville was named Class 2A Coach of the Year for the state of Iowa.

Bundle up! Bitter cold winds will make things unpleasant today in the KBOE listening area. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6:00 tonight (1/24) because of blowing snow that will cause limited visibility. Then a Wind Chill Advisory goes into effect at 6:00 tonight until 9am Friday (1/25). Cold air plus wind gusts up to 40 miles an hour can create wind chills that make it feel like it’s 30 below zero. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur quickly if you’re not properly protected from the cold. Keep tuned to the No Coast Network for the latest weather updates.
Pedestrian killed by train in Ottumwa

One person is dead after being hit by a train Wednesday morning (1/23) in Ottumwa. Sgt. Cody McCoy with Ottumwa Police tells the No Coast Network what happened.
“At 11:24am, we were sent down to near the railroad crossing at the Burlington Northern tracks with Iowa Avenue regarding a train vs. pedestrian accident. And it was determined during our investigation that it was a fatality and the investigation is ongoing.”
The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Duane Daniel Heifort of Oskaloosa. McCoy says the collision did not happen at a railroad crossing.
