Proof Jason Aldean’s Baby is Cooler Than Us
Jason Aldean spent his first day with his new baby boy cheering his Georgia Bulldogs football team to a win, and you can pretty much guarantee little Memphis’ stud profile is only going to expand from there.
Over the past nine months Aldean has provided plenty of detail about what he’s looking forward to as a first-time boy dad. In June, he told Taste of Country he can’t wait to take Memphis hunting and fishing, acknowledging that it will be a few years. There’s no reason he can’t get him excited about University of Georgia football or his Atlanta Braves right now though, right?
A love of sports, a name derived from one of the coolest men who ever walked planet Earth, and two fearsome looking dogs will aid Aldean’s baby boy as he grows.
Memphis Aldean Williams was born on Friday (Dec. 1) at 1:29PM CT, weighing 9 lbs., 5 oz. The married couple of two-plus years let fans in on many of the details about the planning and preparation for their first child together, with his wife Brittany frequently sharing bump pics or scenes from the nursery with fans on Instagram.
In addition to Memphis, Aldean has daughters Keeley and Kendyll from a previous marriage. They seemed to be as excited about getting a brother as Aldean was that a son was on the way.

Main Awarded The Main Street Iowa Challenge Grant
An Oskaloosa project has been selected as one of only 14 across the state to receive funding through the prestigious Main Street Iowa Challenge Grant.
Jennifer Main, a local business and property owner, plans to use the grant to help fund the creation of an apartment above her Edward Jones office at 111 High Avenue East, also known as the Dixon Block, in downtown Oskaloosa. The Dixon Block is a contributing building to the Historic District and retains the beauty of the grand bay window which overlooks the town square.
Current plans for the apartment include two bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen and laundry, new furnace and water heater, living and dining areas, a rear deck, and exterior alleyway access. Construction on the project is set to begin in early 2018, and is anticipated to be completed within a two year time frame.
Creation of upper story housing has been identified as a top priority of Main Street Oskaloosa/Iowa, and the City of Oskaloosa. The Comprehensive Housing Needs Assessment completed in May of 2017, indicates a need for an additional 113 market-rate rental units, a larger demand than any other housing type.
Emily Brown, Oskaloosa Main Street Director, sees the downtown district as the perfect place for these types of apartments. “Our district has huge potential for these types of units. Between that and the wonderful incentives offered through programs like this one, it’s a no-brainer. One of our top priorities is to help facilitate as many upper story housing projects in the downtown area as we can over the next few years to fill the need. ”
Main’s project is not the first in the community to be selected to receive Main Street Iowa Challenge Grant funds. Other local projects funded by the grant include Trolley Place (2009), and the recently completed McMillen Building renovation, which includes a first floor commercial space and four second floor rental units (2015). Main’s project will receive the full $75,000 grant. In all, Oskaloosa has received over $225,000 in funds through the Challenge Grant program.
“The Main Street Iowa Challenge grants have proven to be catalysts for the revitalization of Iowa’s historic main streets,” said IEDA Director Debi Durham. “These projects demonstrate the ongoing financial commitment the people of our state – both our elected officials and private citizens – have made to the revitalization of our historic downtown districts. Rehabilitated downtown buildings create opportunities for new business and new residences in the core of our communities.”
“Each project must provide at least a dollar-for-dollar cash-match. In total, these projects will leverage three times the state’s investment into bricks and mortar rehabilitation. These projects will also have a significant economic impact within each district and have a direct impact on each community’s downtown revitalization efforts,” explained Main Street Iowa State Coordinator Michael Wagler.
The Challenge Grant program is funded through an appropriation from the Iowa Legislature. Since the first appropriation in 2002 through 2016, approximately $6.8 million in state and federal funds have leveraged over $45 million of private reinvestment. Over the life of the program, 138 projects in 49 Main Street Iowa commercial districts across the state have received funding.
“We are extremely grateful this grant program is offered. It has and continues to have a tremendous economic impact in our community” said Brown. “We are very excited to see this project come to fruition.”
The IEDA official press release featuring a complete list of grant recipients can be found at the following address: Iowa Economic Development.
Oskaloosa Main Street’s mission is to enhance downtown Oskaloosa as an attractive, unified and
economically sound commercial district by preserving the architectural heritage and communicating a
positive image.
Reopened Cold Case Leads to Arrest
The recent reopening of a cold case in southeast Iowa has resulted in an arrest. Iowa DCI agent Ryan Kedley says 52-year-old Michael Syperda is now accused of killing Elizabeth Syperda, who was 22-years-old when she vanished in July of 2000 in Mount Pleasant.
“The case was picked up in the last year or two by an agent with the DCI in conjunction with the Henry County Sheriff’s office and the Mount Pleasant Police Department,” Kedley said.
Michael and Elizabeth Syperda were married, but estranged, at the time of her disappearance over 17 years ago. A Henry County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Michael Syperda on a charge of first-degree murder. He was arrested Thursday in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
“Once the arrest warrant for Mr. Syperda was active, there was not much of an issue taking him into custody,” Kedley said. “Once located, he was taken into custody without incident.”
Michael Syperda was never ruled out as a suspect in the case but until now, investigators maintained they had no solid evidence to arrest him. Kedley would not state what led them to file charges now.
“Once he actually has the opportunity to go to trial…the information discussed [before the grand jury] will be addressed during the trial, so at that time, more details of the investigation will be made public,” Kedley said.
One month before Elizabeth Syperda vanished, Michael was arrested for assaulting both his wife and her roommate. He eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery and domestic abuse assault stemming from that incident. He received a suspended prison sentence and was placed on probation for five years. Syperda later moved to Colorado.
Black Bear Killed on I-80 Likely Same From Mahaska and Poweshiek Counties
Photo previously taken on July 12, 2017.
The same black bear that was seen in Mahaska and Poweshiek Counties within the last few months is suspected to be dead.
Officials say that the black bear spotted several times in both Mahaska and Powesheik County was likely the same bear struck and killed by a car on Interstate 80 near Victor Thursday night.
Authorities say a 27-year-old Texas man was driving west on Interstate 80 shortly before 9:30 Thursday night when his minivan hit the bear.
The driver of the minivan wasn’t hurt and neither was his passenger, but the 250-pound bear died instantly. The van wound up in a ditch and had to be towed away.

Musco Illuminates Iowa State Capitol
Iowa’s Golden Dome has a different kind of glow after sundown. The high-pressure sodium lights that cast an orange tint on the state capitol at night are gone. A new L-E-D system is in place, courtesy of Oskaloosa-based Musco Sports Lighting. Jim Berns, Musco’s international engineering manager, was at the capitol Thursday night.
“It was April of 2016 when we first did the demonstration on the west side here,” Berns says. “It’s been a long process, but we’ve finally made it to the night to turn them all on.” Berns and his team made some final adjustments last night. Musco installed similar lighting systems at the White House in 2008 and for the Statue of Liberty in 2015.
“Nice to finally bring it to Iowa and show what can be done on the Capitol Building,” Berns says. L-E-D lighting is cheaper and Berns says it will cut the electric costs for “light-scaping” the capitol “by about two-thirds.”
“It’s also more efficient at getting light to what you want it,” Berns says. “The other huge advantage with LED is maintenance costs. The light source in past lighting fixtures was the weakest link of the system. Now, the light source with LEDs will last hundreds of thousands of hours if you control how they’re operated and monitor the heat and get that away from the fixture. They can last a tremendously long time.”
In 1988, A-B-C Television crews used lights to illuminate the exterior of the capitol building for the network’s Caucus Night reports. State leaders, including then-Governor Terry Branstad, liked the look so much they decided to make nighttime lighting permanent. Berns says Iowa’s statehouse is the only one in the country that has one of Musco’s new L-E-D systems.
“I think the biggest reaction is just being able to see the colors that the capitol really is rather than orange at night and just the truer color that you see on the dome,” Berns said.
Berns just returned to Iowa from the United Arab Emirates where he met with Musco teams working on lighting sports stadiums in the Middle East as well as Europe. Musco is also working on new lighting at Kaufmann Stadium, the home field for the Kansas City Royals, and two other Major League Baseball stadiums.
