Kacey Musgraves Concert Raises Over $100,000 For Her Hometown

Kacey Musgraves returned to her hometown of Mineola, Texas, in September to play a benefit concert at the Mineola Nature Preserve, and now it’s been revealed that the show has raised more than $100,000 for the community. The Music And Arts Program Of Wood County Public Schools will receive $65,000 of the money raised, with nearly $40,000 going toward technology.

Kenseth Draws Two-Race Suspension

NASCAR has suspended Matt Kenseth, driver of the Number-20 Joe Gibbs Racing Sprint Cup Series Toyota, for two races after he intentionally wrecked Joey Logano late in Sunday’s Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway. In addition, Kenseth has been placed on NASCAR probation for six months that’ll carry well into the first half of next season. He was nine laps down to race leader Logano less than fifty laps from the finish when he drove into the back of the Number-22 Team Penske Ford and sent it into the wall. In a statement released Tuesday evening, Joe Gibbs Racing said Kenseth would appeal the penalty.

He wasn’t the only driver slapped with sanctions for bad behavior at Martinsville. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Danica Patrick was fined fifty thousand dollars and docked twenty-five championship points after purposely crashing into David Gilliland in the closing laps of Sunday’s race.

A Democratic Effort To Delay Privatization Of Medicaid In Iowa Has Failed In A Legislative Oversight Hearing

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Democratic effort to delay privatization of Medicaid in Iowa has failed in a legislative oversight hearing.
Democratic lawmakers on the bipartisan Health Policy Oversight Committee proposed a motion Tuesday asking Gov. Terry Branstad to hold off on implementing the privatization plan by six months. But Republicans opposed it and the proposal did not move forward.
Branstad’s plan to move Medicaid to private management is scheduled to start January 1. It has drawn scrutiny over the projected cost savings, how contracts have been awarded and how the change would impact patients.
Officials from the Department of Human Services say they are working to ensure a smooth transition to the new program. But Democratic lawmakers and health care providers questioned the speed of the transition.

Decker Named Male Athlete Of The Week

PELLA—For the second time in his Central College men’s cross country career, senior Cole Decker (Des Moines/Dowling Catholic HS) has been named the Iowa Conference male athlete of the week.

Along with Decker, linebacker Mitch Schroeder (senior, Lowden/North Cedar HS) and kicker Aaron Marcellus (junior, Hudson) took home conference players of the week for defense and special teams, respectively.

Decker wins league title—Decker won his second straight Iowa Conference title Saturday and has now finished in the top three in all four of his league championship races. Decker became the first back-to-back winner since 2009-10 and has now been all-conference four consecutive years. His time of 26:17 led the Dutch to a second-place finish, just seven points out of first. Decker also was the male athlete of the week Nov. 2, 2014.

Decker and the Dutch cross country squad will race next at the NCAA Division III Central Regional Nov. 14. Central will host the event that is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.

Schroeder seals the victory—With just eight seconds left in Saturday’s conference contest at Simpson, the Storm were on the Dutch 22-yard line, trailing 31-24. Enter Mitch Schroeder. With Simpson quarterback Caleb Frye trying to send the game to overtime, Schroeder made a leaping interception at the Dutch eight-yard line, sealing Central’s third conference win. It was Schroeder’s third pick of the year. He also added six tackles, one for loss, and a sack. Schroeder now has 67 tackles on the season.

Marcellus is perfect— Marcellus’ 32-yard fourth-quarter field goal tied the game at 24 before Central went on to win 31-24 over Simpson Saturday in Indianola. He was perfect on PATs, nailing all four of his opportunities. Marcellus is now 4-7 on field goals this season with a long of 42. He has made 28 of his 32 extra-point attempts.

The Dutch football team will play their final home game Saturday against Buena Vista. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.

WPU Falls Back To #19; Playoffs Still A Possibility

Oskaloosa–Despite losing a heartbreaker over the weekend, the Statesmen football team is still in contention for the playoffs as the eighth NAIA top-25 rating was releasedMonday.

Due to its double-overtime loss to Benedictine (Kan.) last Saturday, William Penn (6-3, 2-1 North) is now on the outside looking in at #19 with 105 points.  Heart of America Athletic Conference foes Baker (Kan.) at #3, Grand View at #4, and Benedictine at #12, are ranked ahead of the navy and gold.

A co-North Division crown is still available, but the Statesmen will likely have to come in the back door to make the playoffs and it is uncertain at this time how many teams the Statesmen will need to jump to order to grab one of the final at-large berths.  Fortunately, several teams ahead of WPU still have ranked opponents on their schedule, leaving that option a viable one.

The nation’s top five remains unchanged with Southern Oregon (334 points, 8 first-place votes), Morningside (six top votes), Baker, Grand View, and Doane (Neb.) (1 first-place vote) leading the NAIA.

WPU travels to Lamoni Saturday to face Graceland in a Heart North Division contest at 2 p.m.

In Class 3A, #1 ranked Pella takes on #10 Davenport Assumption.

In Class 2A, #2 South Tama goes on the road to face #1 Albia.

In Class A, #7 Gladbrook-Reinbeck goes to #1 BGM and Lynnville-Sully will be at #9 Mount Ayr.

The 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup has rolled out of Martinsville, Va., for the twelve-hundred-mile trek to Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth –site of Sunday’s Triple-A Texas 500. It’s the second race of the three-week Eliminator Round, during which the field of eight remaining drivers will be trimmed to four.

Chase participants have won this race in nine of the ten years it’s been run as part of NASCAR’s “post-season” format. Tony Stewart, in 2006, is the only non-Chase competitor to claim victory in the fall race at T-M-S … There are forty-five drivers on the preliminary entry list for Sunday’s race led by current Chase points leader Jeff Gordon and defending race winner Jimmie Johnson.
