Oskaloosa’s Girls Shock Washington in First Round Upset

Even as a heavy underdog, the Oskaloosa Indians girls’ basketball team would not be deterred as they came on out on top in a hard fought battle, 36-34.

Lead by their aggressive defense and patient offense, Osky never fell behind by more than five in the first half. Three point shooting kept the Indians afloat in the slowly paced first two quarters as they only were down by one entering the break, 17-16. Osky’s star junior Alexis Westercamp was held to only five points, but Katelyn Smith added six and Paige Howard kicked in five as well.

Suffocating defense led to Oskaloosa outscoring Washington 12-4 in the third quarter, as they took a seven-point advantage into the fourth and final stanza. Westercamp initiated the offense on the interior and Smith added two more huge threes in the second half. The Indians were up as many as nine in the fourth quarter. The Demons would not go quietly on their home court, however, as they forced several key Oskaloosa turnovers to chip away at the Indian lead. With roughly two minutes remaining, Washington’s aggressive offense forced Westercamp to foul out and miss the remainder of the contest. Short thereafter, the Demons would tie the game with two quick buckets in a matter of five seconds.

As 90 seconds ticked away, Oskaloosa and Washington traded empty possessions. Oskaloosa Head Coach Steve Kaisand called a wise timeout to allow to his girls to regroup. With 40 seconds on the clock, Westercamp’s replacement, freshman Marleigh Denburger, received a pass at the top of the key. The defense was draped all over her, but the freshmen showed poise to sink a contested 12-footer to give the Indian girls a two-point lead with 35 seconds remaining in the game.

Washington worked themselves open for two good looks but came up empty and the Indians held on for a 36-34 upset victory.

Westercamp led the Indians with 16 points and 9 boards. Katelyn Smith added 12 with four big makes from behind the arc. Paige Howard grabbed seven rebounds in addition to her five points. Denburger’s game-winner was her only bucket of the game.

Senior Addie Pacha led the Demons with 14 points.

The Oskaloosa Indians will move on for another tough road test against 12th ranked Fairfield on Saturday night. The Trojans are 15-6 on the year. Fairfield walloped Oskaloosa, 103-43, at home on November 30th in the only matchup between the teams this year. The season was in its infancy as it was only Osky’s second game the year.

Daytona Rising ‘Open House’ Today

Daytona International Speedway will hold an “Open House” for the general public today from 3 to 7 p.m. (ET), giving fans the opportunity to explore the amenities featured in the new motor sports stadium. D-I-S will offer self-guided tours to showcase the wider, more comfortable seats and 11 spacious social areas – or “neighborhoods” – along the stadium concourse, part of the four hundred million-dollar renovation of the track’s frontstretch. The “Open House” is free of charge. Attendees can watch two Sprint Cup Series practice sessions. At 3:30 p.m., 2010 Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray will make a special appearance on the main concourse.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Girls’ Control Game In Tourney Win Over Van Buren

The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont girls’ basketball team took care of their home-court advantage Tuesday night, defeating Van Buren, 48-38, in the Class 2A Region 7 Quarterfinals.

The Rockets got out to a hot start and coasted to the finish line without any real threat coming from the visiting Warriors.
EBF was led by senior Karlie Taylor. She finished with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, and 4 blocks. Torie Alexander chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds in the win.
The Rockets will now face #8 Central Decatur, who is the top seed in the Class 2A Region 7 Semis. CD is now 21-1 and are coming off a win over Martensdale-St. Marys Tuesday, 53-28. Their lone loss of the year came to Interstate 35 back on December 8th.
Coincidentally, the other Region 7 Semifinal pits I-35 against Panorama. Both of the semifinal games will be on Friday night at 7 PM.

City Council 2-16-16

The Oskaloosa City Council met Tuesday night, instead of Monday night due to President’s Day on Monday.

Before the meeting, a study session was held at 5 pm to go over the fire station plans, and the council also discussed the Local Option Sales and Services Tax, or LOST. The Council was told that if county residents vote no during the election and city residents vote yes, the city can still collect funds from the county inside the city if the Council wishes to do so.

As 6 pm drew closer, the Council Chambers became packed with citizens ready to speak in the public hearing to be held later that night.

During the Public Comments portion of the meeting, representatives from Mahaska Community Development Group, and One Mahaska both urged the Council to vote yes on the ballot language for LOST.

The major topic of the night was the rezoning of areas around Mahaska Health Partnership. Multiple citizens spoke up during the public hearing stating that they are against MHP being allowed to rezone 416 North 11th Street, 1201 C Avenue East, and 1265 C Avenue East. Residents of the neighborhood said they don’t want to see a parking lot outside their bedroom windows, and they don’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night by the beeping noise of snow plows backing up.

The biggest concerns of the residents were the fact that MHP doesn’t have a plan laid out as to what it wants to do with the properties, and property value going down once the hospital goes through with its plans.

4th Ward Council Member Steve Burnett countered the claims of property value going down. He said he researched property values of the area around MHP for the years between 2011 and 2015, and found the properties in the area actually went up in value.

When it came time to vote on the issue, Mayor David Krutzfeldt stated that a super-majority vote needed to happen in order to pass the issue. The locations of 416 North 11th Street and 1201 C Avenue East both were not passed due to the vote not being super-majority. 1265 C Avenue East was unanimously voted no.

The next scheduled meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council will be held on March 7th, in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

Sigourney Girls’ Hold Off Cedar Valley Christian To Advance To Semis

The Sigourney girls earned a trip to the Class 1A Region 5 Semifinals via a 64-59 win over Cedar Valley Christian in Marengo last night, as heard on 99.5 FM and 740 AM KMZN.  Both teams came out firing in the opening quarter as they traded baskets back and forth, but Sigourney was hot from long range which ended up being the difference.  The Savages never trailed in the game, however Cedar Valley Christian did pull within 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Huskies had two straight possessions midway through the fourth quarter where they could tie or take the lead but came up empty eventually resulting in a Sierra Davis three pointer which was the game changer for Sigourney.  Davis had another huge game for Sigourney scoring 29 points, Autumn Barthelman added 12 and Brooke Waechter contributed 11 as Sigourney improved to 14-9 and will now face a very tough Springville team at Springville in the semi finals at 7pm Friday night.

Man Pleads Guilty To Theft In Council Bluffs Death Case

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — One of three men initially charged in the death of a Council Bluffs man has pleaded guilty to lesser charges as a part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

Twenty-two-year-old Sarael Duncan, of Omaha, Nebraska, pleaded guilty Tuesday to theft. He was originally charged with murder in connection with the August death of 20-year-old Jacob Combs but that charge has been dropped.

Caine Peterson, of Council Bluffs, and Christopher King of Lincoln, Nebraska, also were charged with murder but have agreed to plead guilty to amended charges.

They are accused of robbing Combs of marijuana. Officials say Combs jumped onto Petersen’s vehicle as the three men fled but then fell or was thrown, suffering head injuries. Combs died in a hospital on Aug. 15.

Jeb Burton Joing RPM For 2016 XFinity Series

Richard Petty Motorsports has signed Jeb Burton to drive its Number-43 Ford full-time in the 2016 NASCAR X-FINITY Series. Burton, the son of 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton, competed in the Camping World Truck Series in 2013 and 2014. Last year, he made 28 starts for B-K Racing in the Sprint Cup Series, where Burton posted a best finish of twenty-seventh in the fall race at Martinsville Speedway. Veteran crew chief Drew Blickensderfer will lead Burton’s team, which finished thirteenth in the final 2015 point standings with Dakoda Armstrong behind the wheel. He has since moved over to J-G-L Racing for the 2016 campaign.
