Pekin Girls Advance to State, Monte & Lynnville-Sully Fall Just Short

It was a night of celebration and agony in the Mahaska Zone Network listening area in a busy night in girls’ basketball.

Regional finals occurred all over the state in Class 1A and Class 2A. A trio of area teams competed for the chance to play at Wells Fargo Arena in next week’s State Girls’ Basketball Tournament. Unfortunately, only one of the three came out victorious.

That team was Pekin, as the Panthers dominated down the stretch to get a 55-36 win over #11 Van Meter in the Class 2A Region 5 Final. Pekin has been ranked in the top five all season, and will now advance to the state tournament with a record of 24-1.

The Panthers’ state run will begin on Monday, February 29th, at 6:45 PM. Head Coach Davis Eidahl’s squad will matchup against Okoboji, who is 23-1 on the year, and ranked #5 in the state in Class 2A.

In Class 1A, both area teams fell just short of realizing their state dreams.

In Class 1A Region 3, #14 Lynnville-Sully had a fourth quarter lead, but couldn’t hold off a hard charging #5 Kee, falling in overtime, 61-58. The Hawks took a four-point lead into the final stanza, but Kee forced the extra session, and led by as many as eight, making several key free throws to ice the victory. Lynnville-Sully’s season comes to a close at 21-3.

#9 Montezuma had even a tougher task, as they took on #3 Springville. Monte wouldn’t go away, but could never get over the hump, falling 41-37 in North English in the Class 1A Region 5 Final. Montezuma had a stellar season, improving from a losing season a year ago, to getting a South Iowa Cedar League Championship and finishing at 22-2.

Pekin joins Mid-Prairie, who qualified for the Class 3A State Tournament last Saturday with a win over South Tama in Oskaloosa. The # 14 Golden Hawks (16-8) will play their first state tournament game on Tuesday, March 1, at 3:15 PM against #2 Center Point-Urbana (23-1) at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Community Invited To Learn More At “The Exchange – A New Introduction” Event

OSKALOOSA – Area entrepreneurs, sole proprietors, the self-employed, and those thinking about going into business for themselves are being invited to an event on March 8 by “The Exchange for Entrepreneurs” – a group originally formed in mid-2015 as The Exchange – Oskaloosa CoWorking.  “The Exchange – A New Introduction” will be held March 8 in the meeting room on the main level at One the Green (2214 South 11th Street, Oskaloosa) starting a 6 p.m.

 

“The group changed its name in December after determining the primary focus was evolving into one more suited to helping build an entrepreneurial community, making sure the sharing of valuable information and resources could easily occur,” said Rob Taylor, a member of The Exchange’s Steering Committee. “Co-working isn’t off the table, but our attention and efforts since adopting our new name are to aggressively address the group’s evolution and build a plan to help area entrepreneurs.”

 

Part of that plan is to make sure those in Mahaska County who are contemplating starting their own business and those who may already be self-employed, are invited to the March 8 event to learn how The Exchange may be able to help. “We are currently putting together our 2016 calendar which will provide opportunities to strengthen, grow, and empower Mahaska Community’s entrepreneurs including those who may not yet have taken the leap (into self-employment),” added Taylor.

 

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a social time, followed by a short program at 6:30 which will include a time for Q&A. Attendees will be invited to purchase beverages and food items from On The Green’s menu or enjoy appetizers and beverages available on the complimentary table hosted by The Exchange. Carrie Underwood Surprises Unsuspecting Customers

Carrie Underwood recently surprised customers shopping for her Calia by Carrie Underwood Fitness and Lifestyle brand at a Dick’s Sporting Goods location in Nashville. Wearing a dark wig, glasses, and a hat, Carrie posted as a store employee and helped unsuspecting customers in the Calia section find what they needed. Hidden cameras were placed all around the store to capture Underwood interacting with the customers, and a few of them even recognized her.

 

VanderBeek Victorious In 7th Annual Day Motor Sports Texas Spring Nationals finale

ELM MOTT, Texas (fEB. 20) — It was a tale of two halves in Saturday night’s main event at the Heart O’ Texas Speedway, but at the end of the final chapter the hero of the story was Zack VanderBeek.

The sixth race of USMTS Winter Speedweeks and final night of the 7th Annual Day Motor Sports Texas Spring Nationals saw VanderBeek and Kyle Strickler share the front row for the start of the 50-lap nightcap, and for the first 25 laps they stayed that way.

Strickler edged ahead and nipped Vanderbeek to lead the first lap, but never shook off the 2004 USMTS Rookie of the Year.

The two raced virtually side by side with Strickler holding the advantage at the flag stand for the first dozen laps before VanderBeek led for the first time on lap 13. Strickler was recorded as the leader on laps 14 and 15, VanderBeek led 16 and 17, Strickler led 18, Vanderbeek led 19 and 20, and it was Strickler again for laps 21 through 23.

Diving in and out of lapped traffic for several laps, VanderBeek regained the top spot with 24 laps in the books. From there, he slowly pulled away from Strickler and eventually won the race by more than five seconds.

For his 30th career USMTS triumph, VanderBeek netted $4,000 to add to his $2,000 victory in Thursday’s opener while Strickler registered his career-best finish with a $2,700 runner-up paycheck.

Johnny Scott made a late charge to finish third ahead of Ben Kates and Stormy Scott. Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Ryan Gustin, Cade Dillard, Scott Drake, Jason Hughes and Bobby Malchus.

With his win, the ‘Z-Man’ assumed the top ranking in the Production Jars Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports points with a three-point cushion (542 to 539) over Hughes. Dillard (533), Gustin (522) and Jesse Sobbing (456) round out the top five.

NEXT EVENT:

The third round of USMTS Winter Speedweeks happens at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway for the 5th Annual Cajun Clash on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-27, preceded by a Wednesday evening practice from 6-9 p.m.with free admission to the grandstands and $20 pit passes.

Thursday’s racing program starts at 7 p.m. with $2,000 to win USMTS Modifieds, $500 to win Limited Mods and $300 to win Factory Stocks. Grandstand tickets are $15 with kids ages 12 and under getting in for free. Pit passes are $35.

On Friday, the green flag unfurls at 7 p.m. with USMTS Modifieds competing for $3,000 to win while Limited Mods will battle for $600 to win and Factory Stocks $400 to win. Grandstand tickets are $20 with kids ages 12 and under getting in for free. Pit passes are $35.

Saturday’s finale at Gene Boyter’s popular high-banked oval gets started at 6 p.m. USMTS Modifieds will race for $4,000 to win with Limited Mods paying $700 to win, Factory Stocks $500 to win and Pro-Mods joining the card for $400 to win.

Racing on his home track, Chris Henigan has captured both of his two career USMTS wins here. In 2014, Cade Dillard posted his career-first USMTS victory on Thursday night during the 8th Annual Winter Nationals, Rodney Sanders claimed Friday’s feature and nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock ended the season on a high note with a trip to the winner’s circle on Saturday. All three days of the ninth running of the event was rained out this past November.

Denny Hamlin Takes The Daytona 500

58th DAYTONA 500: Denny Hamlin charged from fourth to first on the final lap of Sunday’s Daytona 500, passing teammate Matt Kenseth for the lead and then surviving a dramatic side-by-side duel down the stretch with Martin Truex Junior that ended with Hamlin scratching out the victory by a mere one one-hundredths of a second.

It’s the closest finish in the fifty-eight-year history of the Daytona 500. After taking the white flag, race leader Kenseth went to the high side to block a fast-closing Hamlin and when he did, the Number-11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota darted into the middle lane and into the lead. Truex briefly got a nose in front before Hamlin then inched ahead to win by an estimated four inches.

Kyle Busch finished third and Carl Edwards was fifth, giving Joe Gibbs Racing three of the top five finishing positions. Kevin Harvick rode home in fourth place. After losing the lead to Hamlin on the final lap, Kenseth slipped back in the field and finished fourteenth … Pole sitter Chase Elliott suffered damage to his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in an early-race spin and lost a number of laps while repairs were made. 2016 State Wrestling Recap

It was a busy 3 days at the 2016 State Wrestling Tournament and you heard every exciting second of the action on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN as Jamie Brockman and Brett Sams brought you over 30 hours of live coverage from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  When it was all said and done 3 state champions (Bryce Leshen and Carter Isley of Albia and Briar Cochran of Moravia) were crowned and a total of 14 wrestlers earned top eight finishes for medals from the Mahaska Zone Network area, led by Albia with four medalists and Moravia with three.

In Class 2A, all four Albia wrestlers earned medals including two champions, earning Albia a third place team finish. Bryce Leshen at 145 and Carter Isley at heavyweight both earned titles to end their stellar high school careers.  For Leshen, it was his first state championship while Isley won his second after winning at 220 pounds last year.  After getting upset in the semifinals Friday night losing 6-5 to eventual champion Matthew Randone of Davenport Assumption, freshman Aden Reeves came out strong Saturday and took home a third place medal at 106 and Blake Lawless finished 6th place at 152. Also earning medals in Class 2A were Levi Duwa of Mid-Prairie (who advanced to the finals but lost by fall in overtime to Gavin Dinsdale of Webster City), Lucas Roland of PCM (finished in 7th place at 138), and Tanner Hoffstetter of Grinnell (finished 6th place at heavyweight).

Several area wrestlers earned medals in Class 1A, highlighted by Briar Cochran of Moravia who won his first state championship at 132, beating Lisbon’s Chase McLaughlin 14-11 in the finals to finish his senior season at 56-1.  Zach Axmear of English Valleys also advanced to the finals Saturday night but was defeated by Connor Schulista of Alburnett, 6-3, and finished his junior season 55-2.   Nicholas Martin of Moravia finished 6th at 126, Kaleb Reeves of Sigourney/Keota finished 7th at 182, and Quinton Casteel of Moravia finished 8th at 220 pounds.

In Class 3A, after being upset in the quarterfinals, Isaiah Cox of Ottumwa finished in 5th place at 182 and ended his senior season at 50-5. Drew Sams of Oskaloosa wrestled tough all tournament to earn a 7th place medal at 132. Sams lost in the opening round to eventual champion Grant Stotts of West Des Moines Valley 3-2, won the first round consolation 10-1, then pulled an upset  winning over #5 Keenan Cook of Fort Dodge in 2nd round consolation.  The match was scoreless through regulation and two full overtimes and came down to the ultimate tiebreaker 30-second period where Sams won by riding Cook for the full :30. Sams lost in the third round consolations 4-1, then won by medical forfeit over Cameron Sadeghi of Keokuk to earn his first medal in his third trip to the state tournament ending his junior season 38-11. Also in Class 3A Pella’s Keegan Poole finished 6th place at heavyweight.

On March 16th, the Mahaska Zone Network will unveil the All-Area Wrestling Team, consisting of the best wrestler at each weight class. The wrestlers will receive a prize pack, as will our basketball All-Area honorees. That show will be at 6 PM on March 16th on KBOE and KMZN.

I’m “Klondyke” and I’m a 1-1/2 year old Husky/Lab mix. As you can see, I am a very handsome guy and I am looking for a kind and energetic individual, with or without a family, to spend the rest of forever with. I am very happy-go-lucky, smiley and energetic. I would love to have someone to love and play with me every day. One thing you should know about me: I don’t like being left alone in the house. Bills On Body Cameras In Iowa Showcase Looming Challenges

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Measures that would address the growing use of body cameras in Iowa are not expected to impact law enforcement agencies this year, but their introduction this session showcases looming challenges for state officials.

Several lawmakers agree legislative action is needed soon as more Iowa authorities use body cameras to counter allegations of excessive force and public mistrust. In Iowa and around the country, legislators are scrutinizing existing laws and using task forces to figure out the storage, public inspection and confidentiality of body camera footage.

In Iowa, a bill that would have specified storage requirements for body camera footage did not move past a procedural deadline. The focus now turns to a separate bill that includes the creation of an interim legislative committee to investigate the issue.
