Oskaloosa Police Urge Safe Driving

OSKALOOSA — The Oskaloosa Police Department participated in the special traffic enforcement phase (sTEP) which went from May 23 to June 5.

During this time period officers issued 35 seat belt citations and arrested one impaired driver. It is the goal of the Oskaloosa Police Department to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries caused by impaired drivers and occupants not wearing their seatbelts.

Additionally, the Oskaloosa Police Department is warning drivers of the dangers involved in texting and driving along with drinking and driving.

The impairments associated with drunk driving and texting while driving are very similar, according to the National Highway and Transportation Administration (NHTSA).

Both cause distraction and impaired driving that can result in following too closely, not being able to brake on time or weaving into oncoming traffic. Drivers who are texting behind the wheel have a 23{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} higher chance of causing a crash.

13 Cup Series Teams Will Test New Pavement At Kentucky Speedway

More than a dozen Sprint Cup Series drivers will take part in a two-day test next Monday and Tuesday at Kentucky Speedway, which is putting the finishing touches on a repaving project that’s added three degrees of banking to Turns-1 and 2 on the mile-and- a-half oval. Regular-season points leader Kevin Harvick, Team Penske’s Joey Logano, Wood Brothers Racing rookie Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch – who has a series-leading three wins this year – are among the drivers scheduled to participate. The test is open to the public free of charge. Cars will be on the track each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (local time) … NASCAR will return to “The Bluegrass State” next month for a tripleheader weekend featuring the Sprint Cup, X-FINITY and Camping World Truck Series.

Fatal Accident Occurs In Rural Jasper County Wednesday Morning

On June 8th, 2016 at approximately 07:38, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident involving a car and truck, located at the intersection of N 83rd Ave E and W 84th St N, Kellogg, IA. Callers reported that the truck was on fire, however the three occupants were able to exit the vehicle. Callers further reported that two subjects were trapped in the passenger car.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Kellogg Fire and EMS and Newton Fire and Paramedics responded to the scene. Life Flight Medical Helicopter and Mid West Ambulance from Grinnell were also requested to assist.

The two subjects in the passenger car were extricated and provided medical care. The three subjects in the truck were also provided medical care.

The driver of the passenger car, identified as Trenton Brady, age 16, of rural Kellogg, was later pronounced dead at the scene. The other four injured subjects were transported to local medical facilities for treatment. The names of the other subjects are currently being held pending the investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was requested to help with the accident investigation.

Osky Softball Sweeps Washington To Move to 9-1

The Oskaloosa softball team has continued their hot start to the season. The Indians swept Washington in non-conference play Tuesday by scores of 6-3 and 9-0.

In the first game, Kylee Silliman pitched well, allowing only five hits and three runs while striking out 15 and only walking one.

She got plenty of offensive support from her teammates, as Alexis Westercamp and Devan Welch would hit solo home runs. Anna Jones went 3 for 4 and Silliman helped herself out with a 2 for 4 night with 2 RBI.

In the second game, Alexis Groet continued her recent roll, as she struck out 13 batters and walked only one in a two-hit shutout.

Offensively, the Indians again came through in the 9-0 blowout. Westercamp would lead the way with three hits and 2 RBI, but Devan Welch again had the big blow. She hit another solo home run, her second of the night and third in as many games (she hit a homer against Grinnell on Monday).

Ashley Kindley, Josie Bunnell, Anna Jones, Kylee Silliman, Aubrey Miller, and Alexis Vroegh would all record a hit in the game as well.

Oskaloosa softball is now 9-1 on the season to match the baseball team, and they have a huge test at home Wednesday night. The three-time defending state champions in Class 4A Dallas Center-Grimes will be coming to town for a single varsity game. Dallas Center-Grimes not only has won the last three state titles in Class 4A, but they are also currently ranked #1 in the state according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The pregame show will be around 7:15 PM on KMZN. The JV game begins around 6 PM for the girls in what should be a fun and busy night at the Oskaloosa Baseball and Softball Complex.

Oskaloosa Baseball Trucks Mt. Pleasant, Now 9-1

The Oskaloosa baseball team was at it again Tuesday night, getting a run-rule victory in five innings over Mount Pleasant, 10-0.

 

The offense continued to rake for the Indians, as eight of the nine spots in the order recorded hits. Four runs were scored right off the bat in the first inning for Osky and six more were added in an impressive rally in the third. The defense would do the rest behind Tucker Nunnikhoven.

 

Nunnikhoven drew the start, looking to give Oskaloosa their sixth straight outstanding pitching performance in as many games on the road, and he delivered. He pitched all five innings in the game, and although he struck out only two and walked four, he allowed only one hit and no runs. He also started the game-ending 1-6-3 double play.

 

Nunnikhoven followed Seth Sarver, Nick Harrington, Bennett Spry, Rian Yates, and Joe Sterner as Indian pitchers who threw at least 5 innings and allowed less than two runs. In the current six-game winning streak, Oskaloosa has outscored their opposition 48-11.

 

The Indians are now 9-1 on the year and 3-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. They will look to improve both of those records as they have a stiff test on Wednesday night against Dallas Center-Grimes at home. DCG came into the season ranked #5 in Class 3A and one of the top contenders along with Osky and Pella in the LHC. The doubleheader begins at the Oskaloosa High School field beginning at 5:30 PM Wednesday night.

Kurt Busch Takes Pocono Raceway

Kurt Busch kept one eye on his fuel gauge and the other on a fast-closing Dale Earnhardt Junior down the stretch Monday afternoon, winning the rain-delayed event at Pocono Raceway. Busch got the jump on "Junior" on the day’s final restart and kept the Number-41 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet in front the rest of the way, stretching his fuel mileage through the final thirty-two laps to notch his first win of 2016. Busch’s margin of victory was one second over Earnhardt with pole sitter Brad Keselowski, rookie Chase Elliott and Joey Logano completing the top five. It’s Busch’s twenty-eighth career victory and third at The Tricky Triangle. The race was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon but persistent rain moved it to Monday.

Logano and Matt Kenseth showed power during the first third of the race, combining to lead forty-eight of the first sixty-five laps. Elliott took over from there and went on to lead fifty-one laps through the middle portion of the race before yielding to Earnhardt – who then fell victim to Busch on the final, pivotal restart … The race pace was slowed by ten cautions, just three shy of the track record. Busch won with an average speed of 125.490 miles per hour, some twenty miles per hour slower than Jeff Gordon’s track record set in 2011 … Speaking of Gordon, he’s the last driver to win back-to- back June races at Pocono – in 1996 and 1997. Martin Truex Junior had his sights set on matching that achievement but was involved in pit-road contact with Matt DiBenedetto early in Monday’s race and never fully recovered, finishing nineteenth … Kevin Harvick’s ninth-place finish was enough to keep him atop the regular-season point standings.

On this day in 1993, Toby Keith scored his very first #1 song with “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” The first of his twenty number one  hits, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” was the lead-off single from Keith’s self-titled debut album Toby Keith. The song would become Certified Gold and with over three million spins on country radio, is the most played country song of the 1990s.
