This day in in 1983, Alabama hits #1 with “The Closer You Get”

This day in in 1983, Alabama hit #1 with “The Closer You Get.”

“The Closer You Get” was written in 1980 by J.P. Pennington and Mark Gray, members of Exile. However, the song was not immediately recorded by Alabama. Two earlier versions were released as singles – the first by Exile (which failed to gain much attention) and singer Don King, whose version reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in October 1981. In addition, Rita Coolidge recorded the song for her 1981 album, Heartbreak Radio, and released her version as a single.

Alabama’s version differed substantially from King’s acoustic version. According to country music writer Tom Roland, the song featured “distorted guitars, a more elaborate arrangement and an altered vocal sound.”

The end result was Alabama’s 10th No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. In addition, “The Closer You Get” registered enough airplay on Top 40 radio stations to peak at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100.

A music video was filmed for the song, and has aired on CMT and Great American Country.

As hard as the loss of their son River has been on Granger Smith and his wife Amber, Amber reveals in a new Instagram post that some good has come out of it. Following the three-year-old’s accidental drowning death the couple donated River’s organs, which went on to help save the lives of two people.

Amber writes that she always wanted to be an organ donor, but, “never in a million years did I think I would be making that decision for my baby.” She explains that when doctors told her there was no chance River would recover, “I thought, how can we bury our sweet baby and not try to help others?” noting, “His body is perfect, his organs are perfect, we had to do something. There are so many people waiting for an organ to save their lives.”

It took a while before the couple found out if River’s organs helped anyone, but Amber shares, “We got the letter that our tiny, red-headed hero gave life to 2 adults. A 49-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man. I cried when we opened it. Cried out of sadness & cried out of love.”
