Do You Know How Jelly Roll Got His Name?

If there’s one artist everyone keeps hearing about, it’s Jelly Roll.  But how did he get such a unique name?  It turns out that Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, has been called that ever since he was a kid.

In a great interview last year by radio superstar Bobby Bones on the “Bobby Bones Show”, Jelly Roll admitted that his mom has been calling him that since he was little.  And then he joked that physically speaking he’s been gradually growing into that “role” ever since.

But it wasn’t just his Mom who called him Jelly Roll growing up.  Apparently, completely un-related, a childhood friend named One Arm Clay (Yes, you read that right) also decided to name him Jelly Roll.

Jelly said, “One Arm Clay was like, ‘We should call you Jelly Roll’ . . .  “I was like, ‘My mama calls me Jelly Roll.'”   And thus ended the greatest artist-naming of all time.

In an old Facebook post he talks more about it and defends himself, “You’ll find out my name represents my size and demeanor in life at times but not my music and what I stand for.”

Chris Stapleton on Sobriety: “It’s a Disservice to Sober People to Call Me Sober”

Chris Stapleton just teamed up with Buffalo Trace to create his own signature whiskey called, “Traveller Whiskey”.  But some people are confused, because recently he said in a “GQ” article that he was “all but sober”.

Well, Chris would like to clarify a few things.  As he likes to tell people that, “he got in a drinking contest with himself in his 20s and lost.”  But now that he has kids a lot has changed, including his drinking habits.

He went on to say, “It’s a disservice to sober people to call me sober.  I’m a 45-year-old man who has a lot more responsibilities and a lot less time for leisure than I used to have.  But I do enjoy it.  The first room you walk in at my house, there’s probably 200 bottles of bourbon there.”

So, while he’s definitely not sober, he’s gotten older and wiser.  But it has got to be a test of will to see 200 bottles of booze as soon as you walk in your house.

KENNY CHESNEY DROPS NEW ALBUM NEWS

Kenny Chesney has been telling fans new music was on the way, and while “Take Her Home” is climbing the country charts, what fans really wanted to know was “when is the new album coming out?” It’s been almost four years since his last album “Here And Now” was released. Yesterday, Kenny was a little more forthcoming on the details.

The new album now has a name, cover art and a release date. The album will be called “Born,” about which Chesney says, “As for the title, well, we’re still not quite done deciding what’s going on here, but one thing’s for sure: ‘Born’ is absolutely the title track. It’s got a lot of heart, a lot of soul – and it speaks the truth about living, life and what we’re all doing here. Banjo out front, a great big pocket that rocks back and forth, it feels great. But more importantly, it’s a lyric that throws out all the options, never tells you what to do and throws out the one existential truth no matter what you choose: ‘one thing’s for certain, we’ve all been living since the day we were born.'”

As for the cover art, you can see it below. Of the picture, Kenny says, “I’d already decided on the cover because it was something clean and simple and true. It’s the kind of picture that says everything but leaves plenty of room for everything else. My friend Allister shot it, and it’s just me looking straight into No Shoes Nation. When I saw it, it was really the only choice for this record.” And the release date has been revealed as well: March 29, just three days after the country legend turns 56.

GARTH BROOKS CHANGED CHICAGO CUBS MANAGER CRAIG COUNSELL’S ENTIRE CAREER

Garth Brooks was a standout college athlete, but as any standout college athlete will tell you, that doesn’t necessarily translate to success at the professional level. Garth will tell you that too.

Garth’s level of fame gave him an opportunity few earn: two invitations to Major League Baseball  Spring Training, for the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets. Garth was never a threat to make the roster of either team, going a combined 1-for-39 at the plate. But it was his presence in the field that made one major leaguer totally rethink the way he batted.

Craig Counsell, former major leaguer (and now manager of the Chicago Cubs) tells the story of how he himself was in a very “Garth-like” slump at the plate in spring training, going an abysmal 0-for-44 at the plate. In the 44th plate appearance, Counsell hit a sharp line drive down the left field line. “I hit a line drive in spring training, and I was like ‘yes, first base hit.’ I put my head down and started running to first. The crowd in Port St. Lucie goes crazy. They go absolutely crazy. I look up and Garth Brooks had made a diving catch in left field to extend my ‘o’fer’ streak. I was released the next day. I had a talk with myself and said ‘why can’t you get any hits?’ And that led to me putting my hands way up in the air (for my batting stance). So I like to blame Garth Brooks for a horrible batting stance.”
