CMT COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS RECAP

Last night was the 23rd Annual “CMT Music Awards,” broadcast live from Austin Texas. It was an evening that centered on live music, with a couple of awards thrown in – as well as a rocking yet emotional tribute to Toby Keith.

Here’s a complete rundown of the entire evening:

  • Kelsea Ballerini was once again the host for the awards, her fourth time doing so – and, as she revealed at the end of the broadcast, her last
  • First up, Cody Johnson got the crowd pumped with his song “That’s Texas.”
  • Jason Aldean performed “Let Your Boys Be Country”
  • Montana Jordan and Emily Osment introduced Megan Moroney for a performance of “No Caller ID”
  • Paul Walter Hauser presents “Collaborative Video Of The Year.” WINNER: Carly Pearce feat. Chris Stapleton “We Don’t Fight Anymore”
  • Amber Reilly introduces Parker McCollum and Brittany Spencer for a duet performance of Parker’s “Burn It Down”
  • Megan Moroney and Max Thieriot present the award for “Breakthrough Female Video Of The Year.” WINNER: Ashley Cooke  for “Your Place”
  • …and “Breakthrough Male Video Of The Year.” WINNER: Warren Zeiders for “Pretty Little Poison”
  • Kelsea Ballerini sings “Come To My Window,” joined by Melissa Etheridge; they then introduce Jordan Davis and NEEDTOBREATHE for a medley of “Brother” and “Next Thing You Know”
  • Jane Seymour presents the “June Carter Cash Humanitarian Award” to Trisha Yearwood
  • Jelly Roll and Kelsea Ballerini introduce Lainey Wilson performing “Country’s Cool Again”
  • Cody Allan introduced Bailey Zimmerman who performs “Where It Ends”
  • Emma Roberts introduced Keith Urban who performs “Straight Line.” Note: Keith kicked off the song by counting down “5, 3, 24!” – did he just reveal the release date for his upcoming 12th album?
  • Carly Pearce presents the “CMT Performance Of The Year” award. WINNER: Jelly Roll “Need A Favor” from the 2023 CMT Music Awards
  • Parmalee introduces Sam Hunt, who performs “Locked Up”
  • James Van Der Beek introduced Kelsea Ballerini, who performed “Love Me Like You Mean It”
  • “Duo or Group Video of the Year” award is presented. Winner: Dan + Shay “Save Me The Trouble.” Dan + Shay accept the award from under the stage as they get ready perform live in Kansas City
  • Roger Clemens introduces a Toby Keith tribute, which consisted of: Brooks & Dunn singing “Should’ve Been A Cowboy”…Sammy Hagar performing “I Love This Bar” and, then, Lukas Nelson & Riley Green introduced Lainey Wilson, who sang “How Do You Like Me Now?”
  • At the end, all the performers joined center stage to salute Toby with a Red Solo Cup toast, recognizing his family and thanking them for sharing Toby with the world
  • Cody Allan introduced Old Dominion and Megan Moroney, who performed “Can’t Break Up Now”
  • Cody Johnson and Kelsea Ballerini introduce Trisha Yearwood, who performs “Put It In A Song”
  • Mickey Guyton introduced Dasha who performs “Austin”
  • Minnie Driver presented the “Male Video of the Year.” WINNER: Jelly Roll for “Need A Favor”
  • Little Big Town and Sugarland perform their new song, a cover of Phil Collins’ “Take Me Home”
  • Gayle King presents “Female Video of The Year” WINNER: Lainey Wilson for “Watermelon Moonshine”
  • Billy Bob Thornton presents the “Video Of The Year” WINNER: Jelly Roll “Need A Favor”
  •  Jelly Roll closed out the show with a performance of “Halfway To Hell”
