OTTUMWA MAN CHARGED WITH STRING OF BURGLARIES

Ottumwa man charged with string of burglaries

17 counts of burglary and 16 counts of theft.  That’s what an Ottumwa man is facing after an investigation into several recent burglaries in Agency and Ottumwa.  The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office says there was a high number of calls in the early morning hours of February 12 from Agency residents about burglaries.  All of them involved items stolen from vehicles.  Investigators determined the vehicle used in the thefts had been stolen and that vehicle was recovered.  Then this past Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office handled several calls of thefts from the Bladensburg Road area of Ottumwa.  There were reports of items stolen from vehicles, garages and outbuildings, as well as a stolen 2006 GMC Envoy SUV.  The vehicle used in committing the burglaries was a different one, but it had been reported stolen at 2am on Tuesday (2/18).  That vehicle was found at 11:45am Tuesday behind an unoccupied residence on Bladensburg Road.  Then around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, the stolen SUV was spotted travelling on Cliffland Road southeast of Ottumwa.  Sheriff’s Deputies tried to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle took off and later, the driver tried to flee on foot.  The driver, 22-year-old Darian Heath Gideon of Ottumwa, was caught and arrested.  During an interview with law enforcement, Gideon admitted to the thefts from Agency and those from the Bladensburg Road area.  He’s being held without bond in the Wapello County Jail on a total of 33 charges of burglary and theft at various levels, as well as eluding, not having a valid driver’s license and a burglary warrant from Davis County and a probation violation.
