1 of the few remaining survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor has died at 102

HONOLULU (AP) — Richard C. “Dick” Higgins, one of the few remaining survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, has died, a family member said Wednesday. He was 102.

Higgins died at home in Bend, Oregon, on Tuesday of natural causes, granddaughter Angela Norton said.

Higgins was a radioman assigned to a patrol squadron of seaplanes based at the Hawaii naval base when Japanese planes began dropping bombs on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941.

He recounted in a 2008 oral history interview how he was in his bunk inside a screened-in lanai, or porch, on the third floor of his barracks when the bombing began.

“I jumped out of my bunk and I ran over to the edge of the lanai and just as I got there, a plane went right over the barracks,” he said according to the interview by the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas.

He estimated the plane was about 50 feet (15 meters) to his side and 100 feet (30 meters) above his barracks. He described “big red meatballs” on the plane, in reference to the red circular emblem painted on the wings and fuselages of the Japanese aircraft.

“So, there was no doubt what was happening in my mind, because of the things that had been going on,” he said.

Norton called her grandfather a humble and kind man who would frequently visit schools to share stories about Pearl Harbor, World War II and the Great Depression. Norton said he wanted to teach people history so they wouldn’t repeat it.

“It was never about him,” Norton said. “The heroes were those that didn’t come home.”

Higgins was born on a farm near Mangum, Oklahoma, on July 24, 1921. He joined the Navy in 1939 and retired 20 years later. He then became an aeronautics engineer for Northrop Corporation, which later became Northrop Grumman, and other defense contractors. He worked on the B-2 Stealth Bomber, Norton said.

His wife, Winnie Ruth, died in 2004 at the age of 82. They had been married for 60 years.

Not long after he went into hospice last Thursday, he told his granddaughter, “I’m ready to go see Winnie Ruth.”

“I said, ‘It’s OK, go home. Be with Jesus and be with Winnie Ruth,'” Norton said. “’It’s okay to do that. Leave us. You’ve had it’s such a good and full life.'”

There are now 22 survivors of the attack still living, said Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. Farley said other survivors may still be living but not all joined the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association when it was formed in 1958 and so may not be known to her.

About 2,400 servicemen were killed in the bombing, which launched the U.S. into World War II. The USS Arizona battleship alone lost 1,177 sailors and Marines, nearly half the death toll.

About 87,000 military personnel were on Oahu on Dec. 7, according to a rough estimate compiled by military historian J. Michael Wenger.

Higgins is survived by two children, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family plans to hold a memorial service at a church in Bend on Thursday followed by a ceremony with full military honors. Afterward his body will be flown to California, where he will be buried next to his wife.

New Alzheimer’s Association Report Reveals Top Stressors for Caregivers and Lack of Care Navigation Support and Resources

DES MOINES — The Alzheimer’s Association 2024 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report reveals that both dementia caregivers and health care workers report difficulties in navigating dementia care within the U.S. healthcare system. The new report estimates that 6.9 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s dementia and over 11 million loved ones are providing care. In Iowa, over 62,000 people are living with the disease, and there are nearly 100,000 caregivers.

This year the cost of caring for people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is projected to reach $360 billion — a $15 billion increase from a year ago. This does not include unpaid care provided by family caregivers and friends. Last year in Iowa family caregivers provided 125 million hours of unpaid care valued at $2.284 billion.

An accompanying special report, “Mapping a Better Future for Dementia Care Navigation, provides a comprehensive look into dementia care navigation by surveying dementia caregivers and health care workers on their experiences, challenges, awareness and perceptions of care navigation in dementia care. Dementia care navigation provides clinical and nonclinical support to people living with dementia and their caregivers. A dementia care navigation program can include support to address barriers related to medical, legal, financial and emotional stress and questions, helping finding and accessing medical care and local resources and more.

Key findings:

  • A majority of caregivers (70%) report that coordination of care is stressful.
  • More than half of the caregivers surveyed (53%) said that navigating health care was difficult.
  • 2 in 3 caregivers (66%) also have difficulty finding resources and support for their needs.
  • The top five stressors for caregivers are:
    • Cost (reported by 42% of caregivers)
    • Coordinating with multiple doctors (36%)
    • Securing appointments (35%)
    • Getting help taking a break (35%)
    • Finding appropriate doctors (32%)
  •  Despite coordinating care and scheduling being top stressors for caregivers, only half of the caregivers surveyed (51%) have ever talked with a healthcare professional about challenges finding their way through the healthcare system or asked for help with dementia care.
  • Black and Hispanic caregivers report managing care on a daily basis (43% and 45%, respectively) compared to White caregivers (31%).
  • The vast majority of dementia caregivers (97%) say that they would find navigation services helpful. Services cited most often by caregivers include:
    • A 24/7 helpline (36%)
    • Help with coordinating care and communication between different specialists (34%)
    • Getting help in understanding their care recipient’s condition (34%)
  • 60% of healthcare workers surveyed believe that the U.S. healthcare system is not effectively helping patients and their families navigate dementia care. Nearly half (46%) say that their organizations do not have a clearly defined process for care coordination and clinical pathways for patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Association is involved in efforts across the nation to implement and improve dementia care navigation programs so families facing this devastating disease aren’t burdened with additional stress from being unable to easily navigate care. In Iowa, the Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter is advocating state lawmakers for funding for a Dementia Service Specialist program which would help families with many of the dementia care navigation needs including finding doctors and local resources and support.

Mega Millions jackpot reaches $977 million after no one wins Tuesday’s drawing

DES MOINES (AP) — The Mega Millions jackpot has reached $977 million for Friday night’s drawing after no tickets matched all six numbers drawn on Tuesday night.

The winning numbers drawn on Tuesday were 24, 46, 49, 62, 66 and the gold Mega Ball was 7. The estimated jackpot was $893 million with a cash prize of $421.4 million. The cash prize for Friday’s drawing is $461 million.

Four people won $1 million each in California, Texas, Virginia and Florida.

It’s just the sixth time in the game’s nearly 22-year history that the jackpot has reached this level; only five jackpots exceeding $1 billion have been higher.

Mega Millions is the only lottery game that has awarded five jackpots exceeding $1 billion, all in different states. South Carolina was the first in 2018, followed by Michigan in 2021, Illinois in 2022, Maine in early 2023 and Florida last August.

The odds of winning any lottery jackpot are very slim. Mega Millions players have a 1 in 302.6 million chance of taking home the top prize.

Mega Millions tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Another Iowa House bill to address eminent domain concerns

By O. Kay Henderson (Radio Iowa)

A House committee has approved a bill that outlines a new legal avenue for landowners who don’t want a carbon pipeline to run through their property.

Representative Bobby Kaufmann of Wilton said it’s the fifth time the House has introduced a bill to address the ability of developers to gain eminent domain authority to seize ground from unwilling property owners.\

“To the landowners that are here today, I will not stop fighting for you. House
Republicans will not stop fighting for you and I think you’ll see House Democrats will not stop fighting for you,” Kaufmann said. “This is a bipartisan issue….and this is now a live round for the rest of the session.”

The bill would give the Polk County District Court authority to review claims from landowners or developers about whether eminent domain authority may be used for any project — including the proposed Summit Carbon Solutions Pipeline.

Representative Chuck Isenhart of Dubuque said he’s not sure the Iowa Utilities Board will make a “clear determination” on whether Summit’s pipeline is “a public necessity” and, therefore, may use eminent domain. “I think the courts are ultimately are going to be the place where that happens,” Isenhart said, “so why don’t we get about that sooner rather than later?”

The bill cleared the House Ways and Means Committee on a 24-0 vote. It’s now eligible for House debate. Earlier this year the House passed a different bill about carbon pipelines, but it never came up in the senate before last week’s deadline for action on the bill.

Northern Mahaska Specialty Care receives accessible van

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (March 19, 2024) — As part of Care Initiatives’ commitment to improving the health and quality of life for Iowans, the state’s largest non-profit operator of skilled nursing facilities has invested more than $200,000 to support the transportation needs of residents.

Northern Mahaska Specialty Care, which is owned by the non-profit Care Initiatives, received a new wheelchair-accessible van that will provide greater access to care, improve community engagement, and provide peace of mind for resident families. Oskaloosa is one of three Care Initiatives locations that received a van.

“The vans will fill a gap for residents who have appointments with specialists and other health care providers outside of our buildings and provide peace of mind for family or friends who otherwise would have made those travel arrangements,” said Jessica McDyer, Care Initiatives Vice President of Skilled Nursing Operations. “Plus, we’ll be able to arrange more engaging activities for our residents within their community and have a way to ensure they are safely transported.”

The Chrysler Voyager vans are equipped with a ramp for access by individuals who use a wheelchair or other walking device and provide necessary safety restraints for all passengers.

The three Care Initiatives locations receiving a new transport van include:
•       Panora Specialty Care
•       Northern Mahaska Specialty Care (Oskaloosa)
•       NorthCrest Specialty Care (Waterloo)
