GARTH BROOKS CHANGED CHICAGO CUBS MANAGER CRAIG COUNSELL’S ENTIRE CAREER

Garth Brooks was a standout college athlete, but as any standout college athlete will tell you, that doesn’t necessarily translate to success at the professional level. Garth will tell you that too.

Garth’s level of fame gave him an opportunity few earn: two invitations to Major League Baseball  Spring Training, for the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets. Garth was never a threat to make the roster of either team, going a combined 1-for-39 at the plate. But it was his presence in the field that made one major leaguer totally rethink the way he batted.

Craig Counsell, former major leaguer (and now manager of the Chicago Cubs) tells the story of how he himself was in a very “Garth-like” slump at the plate in spring training, going an abysmal 0-for-44 at the plate. In the 44th plate appearance, Counsell hit a sharp line drive down the left field line. “I hit a line drive in spring training, and I was like ‘yes, first base hit.’ I put my head down and started running to first. The crowd in Port St. Lucie goes crazy. They go absolutely crazy. I look up and Garth Brooks had made a diving catch in left field to extend my ‘o’fer’ streak. I was released the next day. I had a talk with myself and said ‘why can’t you get any hits?’ And that led to me putting my hands way up in the air (for my batting stance). So I like to blame Garth Brooks for a horrible batting stance.”

The Internet can be a wonderful thing, especially for music fans. Music at your fingertips, for example, and artists seeing the benefits of keeping their fans engaged by communicating with them directly, and in some cases, dropping some new unreleased music on them. While fans are still wading through Morgan’s epic “One Thing At A Time” album, he’s working on the next thing. He dropped an audio clip on Instagram of a new demo version of a song he’s been working on for fans over the weekend, “I Guess.” While fans were digging having something new from Morgan, peers were quick with praise as well. Parker McCollum commented under the clip,

No joke: Feds are banning humorous electronic messages on highways

PHOENIX (AP) — It’s no joke. Humorous and quirky messages on electronic signs will soon disappear from highways and freeways across the country.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has given states two years to implement all the changes outlined in its new 1,100-page manual released last month, including rules that spells out how signs and other traffic control devices are regulated.

Administration officials said overhead electronic signs with obscure meanings, references to pop culture or those intended to be funny will be banned in 2026 because they can be misunderstood or distracting to drivers.

The agency, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, said signs should be “simple, direct, brief, legible and clear” and only be used for important information such as warning drivers of crashes ahead, adverse weather conditions and traffic delays. Seatbelt reminders and warnings about the dangers of speeding or driving impaired are also allowed.

Among those that will be disappearing are messages such as “Use Yah Blinkah” in Massachusetts; “Visiting in-laws? Slow down, get there late,” from Ohio; “Don’t drive Star Spangled Hammered,” from Pennsylvania; “Hocus pocus, drive with focus” from New Jersey; and “Hands on the wheel, not your meal” from Arizona.

Arizona has more than 300 electronic signs above its highways. For the last seven years, the state Department of Transportation has held a contest to find the funniest and most creative messages.

Anyone could submit ideas, drawing more than 3,700 entries last year. The winners were “Seatbelts always pass a vibe check” and “I’m just a sign asking drivers to use turn signals.”

“The humor part of it, we kind of like,” said state Rep. David Cook, a Republican from Globe, told Phoenix TV station CBS 5. “I think in Arizona the majority of us do, if not all of us.”

He said he didn’t understand the fuss.

“Why are you trying to have the federal government come in and tell us what we can do in our own state? Prime example that the federal government is not focusing on what they need to be.”

Survey: Iowa business leaders have ‘robust optimism’ for state economy, future

By Matt Kelley (Radio Iowa)

The latest survey of the state’s top business leaders finds a majority of them remain positive about Iowa’s overall economy. Joe Murphy, president of the Iowa Business Council, says the fourth quarter survey also finds the chief decision makers of the major Iowa employers are confident in their outlook for the first six months of the new year.

“We’re really pleased to see robust optimism across all sectors of our survey as we enter 2024 in all three categories,” Murphy says. “Capital spending, sales expectations, and employment expectations are all above 50 index points, which is the key threshold to project a positive level of confidence for the next six months.”

In particular, Murphy says capital spending expectations were up by six points in the survey, well above positive threshold, which he says is crucial.

“That indicates even more expectation that companies will put additional resources into their Iowa expansion efforts, into their Iowa operations,” Murphy says. “That’s really important as we think about how this state will continue to grow, how the business climate will continue to be competitive nationally or internationally.”

One downside expressed in the survey is the continued difficulty in finding qualified workers to fill positions. Murphy says it’s a persistent challenge for every Iowa business, from small shops to large multinational firms.

“That’s just the issue that we have with our population constraints,” he says. “We have more jobs available in this state than people on unemployment. We have about 57,000 job openings across all sectors of Iowa’s economy and only about 35,000 people on unemployment. So we really need to be focusing on how we can recruit new Iowans into our state.”

Murphy suggests the state look to luring people from both high-cost areas around the Midwest and the coasts, but he also calls on Iowa’s federal delegation to pass comprehensive immigration reforms to allow legal immigration to continue to flow.

The 22-member Iowa Business Council represents more than 150,000 working Iowans.
