Governor Reynolds opposes legalizing recreational marijuana use

Marijuana was a big topic during this year’s Iowa Legislative session.  A bill was passed that would have allowed the amount of THC—the ingredient in marijuana that gets you high—to be raised in medical marijuana.  But Governor Kim Reynolds voted the bill.  She tells the No Coast Network why.

“There’s a lot of data out there and a lot of research that shows the impact. A lot of people start just innocently with recreational marijuana and it leads to addiction and other problems and so, I just don’t think we want to rush into that.  I’m just not in favor of recreational marijuana–at all.”

Reynolds says she’s fine with looking at the state’s medical marijuana laws, but is opposed to making recreational marijuana legal.

Riley Green Ready To Feel “Different” Next Month

Rising country star Riley Green is getting ready to release his debut album “Different ‘Round Here” on September 20. He’s a singer-songwriter from Alabama who grew up on traditional country, bluegrass, and southern gospel music.

The 14-track upcoming release has already produced number one hit “There Was This Girl” and features his latest track, “I Wish Grandpa’s Never Died,” a song People magazine praised “might take him to a whole new stratosphere,” and one he shares co-writing credits posthumously alongside his two grandfathers.

“I started putting out music independently to have material to do shows around Alabama and Georgia,” he shared. “Here we are just a year or so later and I’m still that same guy from Alabama, just singing those songs on a bigger stage. Those and each of these songs are a part of my life and I’m ready to play them out on the road!”

Riley is currently on the road with Brad Paisley’s 2019 “World Tour.”

Today in 1967, Bobbie Gentry released her only hit: “Ode to Billy Joe.”

This day in 1967, Bobbie Gentry released her only hit: “Ode to Billy Joe.”

The single was a number-one hit in the US within three weeks of release and a big international seller. Billboard ranked the record as the No. 3 song of the year. The recording remained on the Billboard chart for 20 weeks and was the Number 1 song for four weeks.

It generated eight Grammy nominations, resulting in three wins for Gentry and one for arranger Jimmie Haskell. “Ode to Billie Joe” has since made Rolling Stone’s lists of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” and the “100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time” and Pitchfork’s “200 Best Songs of the 1960s”.

The song takes the form of a first-person narrative performed over sparse acoustic accompaniment, though with strings in the background. It tells of a rural Mississippi family’s reaction to the news of the suicide of Billie Joe McAllister, a local boy to whom the daughter (and narrator) is connected. Hearsay around the “Tallahatchie Bridge” forms the narrative and musical hook. The song concludes with the demise of the father and the lingering, singular effects of the two deaths on the family. According to Gentry, the song is about indifference and unshared grief.
“Ode to Billie Joe” was originally intended as the B-side of Gentry’s first single recording, a blues number called “Mississippi Delta”, on Capitol Records. The original recording, with no other musicians backing Gentry’s guitar according to some reports, had eleven verses lasting eight minutes, telling more of Billie Joe’s story. The executives realized that this song would work best as a single, so they cut the length by almost half and added background music, strings, two cellos and four violins, according to Gentry.

The only surviving draft of the seven-minute version of “Ode to Billie Joe”, which consists of two handwritten pages, is located in the archive of the University of Mississippi. Gentry donated the draft to the University’s Faulkner room in 1973. In addition to the iconic lyrics that made the final cut, the unused lyrics may showcase Bobbie Gentry’s mindset and possible answer to mystery of what was thrown from the bridge; as well as the relationship of the narrator to Billie Joe. The shorter version left more of the story to the listener’s imagination, and made the single more suitable for radio airplay. In an interview with Bob Harris broadcast by BBC Radio 2 in Bob Harris Country on April 16, 2009, singer Rachel Harrington claimed that Gentry originally wrote 11 verses, but deleted six because a record producer thought the song was too long. The song is noted for its long descending scale by the strings at the conclusion, suggesting the flowers falling after being dropped off the Tallahatchie Bridge and ending up in the river water below.

In a later interview Gentry took full credit for the success of the record. “Did you know that I took “Ode to Billie Joe” to Capitol, sold it, and produced the album myself? It wasn’t easy. It’s difficult when a woman is attractive; beauty is supposed to negate intelligence – which is ridiculous. Certainly there are no women executives and producers to speak of in the record business.”

The song’s popularity proved so enduring that in 1976, nine years after its release, Warner Bros. commissioned author Herman Raucher to expand and adapt the story as a novel and screenplay, Ode to Billy Joe. The poster’s tagline, which treats the film as being based on a true story and gives a date of death for Billy (June 3, 1953), led many to believe that the song was based on actual events. The film was released in 1976, directed and produced by Max Baer, Jr, and starring Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor. Only the first, second, and fifth verses were sung by Bobbie Gentry in the film, omitting the third and fourth verses.

Soon after the song’s chart success, the Tallahatchie Bridge was visited by more individuals who wanted to jump off it. Since the bridge height was only 20 feet, death was unlikely. To curb the trend, the Leflore County Board enacted a law fining jumpers $100

Dierks Bentley Visits ‘Today’ Show, Leaves With New Puppy

Dierks Bentley visited the set of the “Today Show” yesterday and he left with an unexpected new family member. Dierks went ahead and adopted a new puppy during an on-camera segment called Dogust.

He was originally scheduled on the show to perform as part of the Today Citi Concert Series, and talked about his upcoming “Seven Peaks Music Festival,” his family and more.

During the show, he was assigned a Border Collie mix pup named Goose to hold during the segment. The whole thing was geared toward encouraging people to adopt shelter dogs during the month of August. It was love at first sight for the country star, who ended up adopting the pooch right on the spot.

“I feel a connection, I feel like it’s meant to be,” a smiling Bentley said.

This day in 2000: Charges against Tim McGraw in famous ‘Horse Incident’ dropped

This day in 2000: The felony charges filed against Tim McGraw in connection with the infamous “horse incident” in Buffalo were dropped. Since he and Kenny Chesney still faced a variety of misdemeanor charges, the case eventually went to trial and the pair was completely exonerated.

On June 3, 2000, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw were headlining a show together in Buffalo, N.Y. It was business as usual, but the two friends would wind up in jail before the day was over. An incident with a horse led to charges of assaulting a sheriff’s deputy.

According to news reports from the time, Chesney asked the daughter of a sheriff’s deputy if he could ride his horse. He then rode away, ignoring orders to stop. Two officers tried to remove him, and McGraw and his manager got involved. A minor scrum broke out and the lawmen suffered minor injuries.

Erie County Sheriff Patrick Gallivan said: “But because they had sustained the injuries, the law in New York State says assaulting a police officer is a felony, regardless of the extent of the injuries — from a minor bruise to lacerations and broken bones.”

The country music icons were arrested, arraigned and released on bail. A year later, all three men were found innocent of any wrongdoing. McGraw and his manager faced up to a year in jail, while Chesney was ultimately charged only with disorderly conduct.

McGraw and Chesney later toured together on the Brothers of the Sun tour in 2012 without incident.

US is thought to have added a solid 163,000 jobs in July

By JOSH BOAK

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers are thought to have sustained a steady pace of hiring in July, a reassuring sign for an economy that’s endured a series of ups and downs.

Economists have forecast that the government will report that 163,000 jobs were added in July, according to data provider FactSet. This would be roughly in line with the average monthly gain of 172,000 so far this year, though below the 224,000 jobs added in June.

The unemployment rate is believed to have remained at 3.7{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} for a second straight month, close to a 50-year low.

The economy’s overall growth, along with consumer spending, has been solid. But business investment has been declining, home sales have weakened and manufacturers have shown signs of struggling.

Despite the economy’s resilience, the Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut its benchmark interest rate for the first time in a decade to try to counter the impact of President Donald Trump’s trade wars, stubbornly low inflation and global weakness. One day later, Trump announced plans to tax an additional $300 billion of Chinese imports beginning in September.

In the meantime, with the decade-long economic expansion now the longest on record, some employers appear to be running out of workers to hire. The average monthly job gain has dropped by 63,000 compared with the first six months of 2018. The bulk of the decline has come from the construction, manufacturing and mining and logging sectors, according to Martha Gimbel, director of economic research at the Indeed Hiring Lab.

Though it is growing consistently, the economy appears to be sliding into a slower phase. The gross domestic product — the total output of goods and services produced in the United States — grew at a decent if unspectacular 2.1{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} annual rate in the April-June quarter, down from a 3.1{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} pace in the January-March period.

Consumer spending increased at a 4.3{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} annual rate and helped propel much of the growth. But business capital investment declined for the first time in three years, a likely sign that Trump’s aggressive use of tariffs against China and other countries has slowed corporations’ expansion plans.

Pay gains also appear to have stalled, even though lower unemployment has historically boosted worker pay. Wages and benefits have risen 2.7{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} over the past 12 months, down slightly from the 2.9{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} gain for last year, the Labor Department said.

Home sales have fallen as high prices have kept many people out despite the benefits of low mortgage rates and job gains. Sales of existing homes have tumbled 2.2{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} over the past 12 months, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Factories have also been coping with a slowdown. In part, that’s because the global economy has weakened and the president’s tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of goods — and threats to add more — have disrupted supply chains. The Fed said this month that manufacturing output has improved just 0.4{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} from a year ago after having declined over the past six months.

There are signs, though, that consumers are optimistic. The Conference Board’s index of consumer confidence last month reached its best reading since November. A higher percentage of Americans anticipate pay raises in the next six months.

Indeed, spending at restaurants and bars has increased 4.2{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} year-to-date, according to government reports. And while traditional store retailers have faced hardships, online stores have prospered: Non-store retailers have enjoyed a 10.6{99cd714f394079a7f0ed2eb1518dd31342ff3ceb5b6c267c3ad8acd5b5a7d66b} jump in sales.

Southern Iowa Speedway Crowns Track Champions

By: Jerry Mackey

DeJong Manufacturing of New Sharon hosted the 2019 Season Championships on Wednesday night at the Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Speedway.

The headliner of the night was the Midstate Machine Stock Car Championship feature. The green flag flew and Moberly, Missouri’s Derrick Agee set sail from his outside front row starting position and led the field into turn one with Nathan Wood running a close second. Agee rode the preferred high line to a comfortable win in the Championship event. As the laps clicked off Agee was able to stretch out his lead over Wood. Dustin Griffiths ran a strong third ahead of a great battle for fourth which ended up seeing Donovan Nunnikhoven holding off Cayden Carter at the finish line. With a second place finish Wood earned his second consecutive season point championship in the very tough Stock Car class.

The Oskaloosa Quality Sportmod class had a strong 16 car starting field on Wednesday night. Blaine Webster led in the early going before a tangle sent Webster to the rear along with Curtis Vanderwal who ended up retiring from the event with mechanical problems. Dyaln VanWyk took over the point position only to be overtaken late in the race by Brayton Carter. VanWyk crossed under the checkers in second while Webster battled back through the pack to take third. The third place run secured the track Championship for the young Webster from Ottumwa.

The Season Championship feature in the Parker Tree Service Hobby Stock main event belonged to Dustin Griffiths. The 10G of Griffiths was recorded as the leader flag to flag, Christian Huffman ran a strong second ahead of Mike Hughes, who advanced from the third row to take third in the Championship run. Griffiths earned his second consecutive Parker Tree Service Hobby Stock track title.

The Autocrafters Sport Compact Season Championship feature saw Trent Orwig finish off a stellar season with both the Track point title and the Championship feature win to his credit. Orwig used a late race pass of leader Brandon Allison to secure the Championship feature win.

Attrition hit the wingless Sprint Car division on Wednesday night as two separate multi car incidents including rollovers happened in the qualifier. Fortunately no one was injured in the incidents. The main event win for the sprinters went to Mike Mayberry who raced to the checkers first ahead of Doug Sylvester.

The Southern Iowa Speedway will host the annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge on Friday & Saturday, September 20 and 21. Details will be released soon and can be found on the Southern Iowa Speedway web page and will also be available on Facebook.

Shooting suspect wants bail reduced

A man from Agency accused of shooting his father wants his bond reduced.  36-year-old David Nordyke III was charged with attempted murder in the July 8 shooting of David Nordyke Junior.  Nordyke III has been held in the Wapello County Jail on $250,000 cash only bond, but his attorney is asking that the younger Nordyke be released on his own recognizance.  A judge will consider that request on Monday (8/5).

Gov. Reynolds meets Vermeer apprentices

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg were in Pella Thursday morning (8/1) to meet with apprentices at Vermeer Incorporated.  The Governor has long supported apprentice programs of this type.  She also touted Pella’s Career Academy, which allows students to work at Vermeer three hours a day during the school year and 40 hours a week during the summer.  There are nine schools in Iowa that have work-based learning programs and Reynolds says seeing the Vermeer/ Pella partnership will make other school districts believers.

“I bet you anybody that came here and (saw) this will seriously come back to their school district and find a way to make it happen.”

One apprentice, Carson Reynolds—no relation to the Governor—graduated from Pella High this spring. He says he was planning to enlist in the Marines after graduation, but when his enlistment was delayed, he joined the apprenticeship program at Vermeer.

“I thought about it for a while and it figured to be the best option. It actually helps out with college, too, so that helped a lot. The pay wasn’t bad. And it’s just a lot of really great opportunities for being able to go through schooling and being able to work and just everything in general about it is just appealing.”

Carson Reynolds adds he’s now more likely to stay in Pella than he would have been had he joined the military.  Governor Reynolds says keeping young people in Iowa is another benefit of the apprenticeship program.

Kelsea Ballerini Completes Work on Third Studio Album

Kelsea Ballerini has completed work on her third album.

She posted to Instagram a few days back, “I have no words left for this caption because we wrote them all these last 3 days, and the last 2 years leading up. so to put it simply, kb3 is done.”

The pictures she posted from the beach show Shane McAnally and Ross Copperman, who are two of Nashville’s top songwriters and producers, as well as ace songwriter Nicolle Galyon, all of whom helped Kelsea on her new album.

No word yet on a release date for Ballerini’s third album.
