KELSEA BALLERINI INVITED TO JOIN GRAND OLE OPRY

Taste of Country – http://tasteofcountry.com/kelsea-ballerini-grand-ole-opry/

The newest member of the Grand Ole Opry will be Kelsea Ballerini, who was bestowed with the honorable invitation on Tuesday night (March 5).

Ballerini was invited into the institution by Little Big Town during her appearance that evening on the legendary stage, when she joined the group for a rendition of “Girl Crush.” At the end, the group’s Karen Fairchild surprised the singer by belting out, “Kelsea Ballerini, will you join the Opry?”

Judging from the video posted to the Opry’s Instagram, Ballerini was totally surprised — as well as overcome — tearing up on stage. Unsurprisingly, “She said yes!” proudly declared the note on the Opry’s Instagram Stories.

OSKY WINS IN FIRST ROUND STATE TOURNEY NAIL-BITER AGAINST MARION

Rian Yates’ three-pointer with 3:09 to play gave Oskaloosa a 51-49 victory over Marion in the Class 3A Boys’ State High School Basketball Tournament in Des Moines Tuesday (3/5).  That three-pointer turned out to be the final basket of the game….as Oskaloosa’s defense fought to keep Marion off the board, forcing two turnovers and then Cole Henry blocked a three-point attempt with four seconds to play to end the contest.  Oskaloosa trailed by ten points at halftime, but rallied as Cole Henry scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half.  Henry talked about the win.

“They did a great job, they’re a well-coached team.  They had a great game plan, they doubled down on us–me and Xavier (Foster)–in the post and that allowed for us to kick out to the (outside) shooters.  In the first half, we weren’t making very many.  But in the second half, it shows that when we  make them, we’re deadly.  When we started making them, that opened up some lanes for me to get some buckets and it worked to our advantage.”

Rian Yates led Oskaloosa with 15 points.  The Indians improve to 17-5 on the season.  They’ll play Winterset Thursday afternoon (3/7) in the 3A semifinals.  Tip-off from the Wells Fargo Arena is scheduled for 3:45; KBOE-FM’s live coverage will start at 3:15.

MONTEZUMA SHOOTS ITS WAY INTO BOY’S STATE BASKETBALL SEMI-FINALS

Montezuma has punched its ticket to the Class 1A Boys State Basketball Tournament semifinals, thanks to a 78-65 victory Monday (3/4) over Bishop Garrigan of Algona.  The Braves got 25 points and 6 assists from Sophomore Trey Shearer…and Braves Coach Derrick Dengler says the Braves also got plenty of hard defensive work from several players.

“I thought our guys really, really battled in there. We had some guys play with some really, really good energy that way.  Some guys who don’t score a ton of points for us–Eddie Burgess, Nolan Havran, Nolan Reynolds, Brayden Arendt.  Those guys just go out and play great defensive energy and they play their roles well, and they’re unselfish and they just battle, battle, do those little things.”
Montezuma improves to 22-1 on the season.  Next up for the Braves: two-time defending State 1A Champion Grand View Christian, who defeated St. Albert of Council Bluffs 58-51 on Monday.  The Montezuma/Grand View matchup tips off at 2pm Wednesday (3/6). KBOE-FM’s live coverage will start at 1:45pm.

BAHENA RIVERA CLAIMS LAW ENFORCEMENT FAILED TO INFORM HIM OF MIRANDA RIGHTS

Cristhian Bahena Rivera, the undocumented immigrant accused of killing University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts is claiming that his constitutional right against self-incrimination was violated by law enforcement officials.

According to Bahena Rivera’s attorneys, he was not informed of his right to an attorney or his right to decline to cooperate before being subjected to the 12-hour interview during which the 24 year old farm worker purportedly confessed to abducting Tibbetts while she was on a run July 18.  If this were true, the Court could rule that the confession was  involuntary and inadmissible as evidence against him.

Bahena Rivera, was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Molly Tibbets after he led investigators to her body in a rural Poweshiek County cornfield.

REMEMBERING LUKE PERRY AT 1994 ACM AWARDS

Actor Luke Perry put on a black cowboy hat and stood alongside country music royalty when he presented a prestigious award to Alan Jackson at the 1994 ACM Awards.

The actor joined Naomi Judd to hand out the Single Record of the Year award. Jackson was nominated for “Chattahoochee” and his win in this category was one of two on the night. However, today an award for this iconic country song takes a back seat to the man presenting.

Perry died on Monday (March 4) at the age of 52 after being hospitalized following a stroke last Thursday (Feb. 28). The actor is best know as Dylan McKay in the ’90s television series Beverly Hills 90210.

MARCH 5: ON THIS DAY

Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copus and Hawkshaw Hawkins were all killed when the plane they were travelling in flew into severe weather and crashed in a forest near Camden, Tennessee, 90 miles from the destination. The Country artists had left for Nashville in a Piper Comanche piloted by Copas’ son-in-law (and Cline’s manager), Randy Hughes. The three had perfromed at a benefit concert at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas for the family of disc jockey Cactus Jack Call, who had died the previous December in an automobile accident.

Thomas Rhett hosted Saturday Night Live

Thomas Rhett’s performance was proverbial fire during his Saturday Night Live debut.  Rhett lit up NBC’s historic Studio 8H as the musical guest of the March 2 episode with the television debut of his newest songs, “Look What God Gave Her” and the super-funky “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time.” Rhett accompanied his vocal lead with a rhythmic acoustic guitar on “Look What God Gave Her,” a song co-written with his father, Rhett Akins.

Later during the John Mulaney-hosted show, a three-piece horn section backed Rhett’s band on the party anthem “Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time.” The studio version of the track features Little Big Town, and both songs are the latest releases from Rhett’s upcoming album, Center Point Road (out May 31).

Rhett joins a long line of country artists who have performed on SNL, including Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, Blake Shelton, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban.
