Winter Heating Moratorium Ends April 1

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – Iowa’s annual winter home heating moratorium ends April 1. The Iowa Utilities Board reminds energy assistance customers currently protected from service disconnection and struggling to pay their utility bills, to contact their local utility company immediately to discuss payment options and avoid disconnection beginning April 2.

Under Iowa’s winter moratorium law, qualified customers for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) or Weatherization Assistance Program are protected from the annual shutoff of natural gas or electric service from November 1 to April 1.

Iowa customers seeking LIHEAP financial assistance for utility bills should contact their local Community Action Agency before April 30 to discuss eligibility guidelines. The LIHEAP program pays only a portion of utility bills to qualified low-income customers.

All utility customers, including those not qualifying for energy assistance, may be eligible to enter into a reasonable payment agreement with their utilities to pay accumulated debt over time and to maintain utility service.

IUB rules regarding natural gas or electric service disconnections and payment agreements can be found in chapters 19 and 20, Utilities Division [199] of the Iowa Administrative Code.

IUB Customer Service staff is available to assist customers with questions about utility service disconnection or other issues that are not resolved directly with their utility company and can be contacted toll-free at 1-877-565-4450, or by email at customer@iub.iowa.gov.

For more information about low-income energy assistance, visit the Board’s website LIHEAP informational page.

Maren Morris Weds Ryan Hurd

Maren Morris is officially a married lady. Maren tied the knot with fellow singer Ryan Hurd in Nashville over the weekend.

Maren shared a picture of their first kiss as man and wife with the caption, “my last turn home,” a reference to a Tim McGraw song she and Ryan wrote together in 2013, which was the first time they met.

The bride wore a custom gown by Nashville designer Cavanagh Baker, which was short in the front, with a detachable long train in the back. The front featured lace and crystal details, along with a very low cut out.

  • ONE MORE THING! One day prior to the nuptials, Ryan released a new single “Diamonds or Twine,” which has sentimental value to the couple. “I wrote this song for you, played it for you in Michigan the night I asked you to marry me,” Ryan shared on Instagram. “Diamonds or Twine, no matter what, I’ll be wrapped around your finger. I love you, MM. Here’s to forever.”

Loyola Becomes Fourth #11 To Reach Final Four

While a pair of Number 1 seeds advanced to the Final Four yesterday, beating a #2 and #3, there were some far more crooked numbers that advanced on Saturday.

And the most crooked of them all was Saturday’s opening Elite Eight game between Number 11 Loyola Chicago Ramblers and the Number 9 K-State Wildcats.

With those numbers, this was certainly the game that guaranteed a Cinderella.

And when the clock struck midnight it was the Number 11 Ramblers who were still dancing, with a decisive 78-62 win.

Ben Richardson scored a career-high 23 points making the 11th-seeded bracket busting Ramblers (32-5) tied for the lowest-seeded team ever to reach the Final Four.

And while that may not be a first, they can still be because the other three teams—LSU in 1986, George Mason in 2006, and VCU in 2011—all lost in the following round.

Next up for Loyola will be the Michigan Wolverines who stand in the way of Loyola becoming the lowest-seeded team ever to win a national championship, a distinction held by No. 8 seed Villanova since 1985.

The navy and gold finished fourth out of 20 teams with 5,132 pins (213.8 average), while Webber International (Fla.) and Robert Morris (Ill.) tied for the most pins with 5,457 (227.4 average). Webber international won the tiebreaker to claim the top seed.

By finishing in the top 12, the Statesmen bowlers received a bye in the double-elimination format and took on #20 seed Lindsey Wilson in the second round. The program won its first match 3-1 by scores of 216-196, 193-215, 215-174, 191-187.

Unfortunately, in a foreshadowing of the future, WPU was dropped to the consolation bracket with a 3-0 loss to #5 seed St. Ambrose (160-213, 163-223, 202-247).

However, William Penn rebounded after the setback by winning three consecutive matches to get to the consolation quarterfinals. WPU claimed its biggest win as it eliminated #2 seed Robert Morris in five games (234-227, 136-243, 199-202, 257-231, 222-215), but the road to the biggest trophy ended in the next round as St. Ambrose slipped past the Statesmen 3-1 (203-209, 237-221, 233-280, 171-246). WPU finished the tournament with a 4-2 record, tying SAU and Lawrence Tech for the second-best record in the field.

The Fighting Bees eventually reached the final and actually forced an ‘if necessary’ match, but Webber International held its seed for the crown.
