50th Annual CMA Awards Scores Big Ratings

Despite going head to head with the historic World Series Game 7 on FOX, ABC’s telecast of the 50th Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday night (11/2) was still watched by more than 12 million viewers. With the telecast’s big ratings, ABC became the dominant entertainment network on Wednesday in Total Viewers (12.6 million) and Adults 18-49. In viewers and young adults, ABC also scored Wednesday season highs and its best entertainment results on the night in one year.

The CMA Responds To Accusations They Erased A Beyonce Clip

The Country Music Association has released a statement in response to accusations that they erased any mentions of Beyoncé’sCMA Awards performance with the Dixie Chicks from their website and social media accounts. CMA’s statement explained that a five-second promotional clip was removed from ABC.com and CMA’s Facebook page prior to the broadcast, but that was because the promo was unapproved. The CMA then praised Bey’s performance with the Dixie Chicks as a highlight of the evening and said they would continue to share the full-length performance clip on their official social channels.

·         In an interview with the New York Times, CMA’s chief executive, Sarah Trahern, further clarified that the promotional clip was taken down before Wednesday’s (11/2) show at Beyoncé’s request. Trahern said, “Beyoncé’s team hadn’t approved that, so we pulled it down. Fans can get kind of passionate and read other things into it.”

·         The statement comes amid some backlash to Beyoncé’s appearance on the CMA Awards, with some social media users criticizing the pop icon for her recent activism for police reform and the Black Lives Matter movement.

·         Dixie Chicks responded to the criticism on Twitter saying, “If we all turn this up really loud, together we can drown out the hate.” The tweet was accompanied by a link to the download of the song “Daddy Lessons.”

Judge Sets Bond at $10 million for Greene

UPDATE: $10M bond set for suspect in officers’ deaths

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has set the bond at $10 million for a man charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of two police officers in Iowa.

Judge William Price set the bond for 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene during Greene’s first court appearance on Friday.

Green was apprehended Wednesday, hours after Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio and Urbandale officer Justin Martin were killed. Both officers were shot in ambush-style attacks while sitting in their cars in separate locations.

If convicted, Green would receive an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole. His next hearing is set for Nov. 14.

Greene appeared in pink jail inmate clothing at the hearing, staring straight ahead without saying anything. The hearing took less than a minute in the Polk County Jail, which has a small courtroom.

Greene was released from a hospital Thursday, and he was arrested later in the day after detectives questioned him at the Des Moines police station.

November 3rd: On This Day

On this day in 1961, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, and Fred Rose became the first inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame posthumously.

Williams, who passed away in 1953, had released more than 30 singles during his career and his final one,  “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive,” was Number 1 after his death.

Fred Rose is credited with helping the careers of Williams and several others; with his many credits as a songwriter. Rose passed away one year after Williams.

Rodgers is considered by many as the Father of Country Music. His popularity soared in the 1920s and into the early ’30s, but at the peak of his popularity, Rodgers lost his battle with tuberculosis.
All three of the initial inductees are also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

No Formal Charges Filed Against Man Suspected Of Fatally Shooting Police Officers Yet

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say no formal charges have been filed yet against the man suspected of fatally shooting two police officers in Iowa, but that he remains hospitalized. Investigators say 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene turned himself into authorities Wednesday, just hours after the killings. Police said early Thursday that Greene remains hospitalized for treatment of an existing medical condition and that an update on the case would come later in the day.

The man suspected of fatally shooting two Iowa police officers had been ordered by a judge to move out of his mother’s home just hours earlier. Court documents show a judge ruled Tuesday that 46-year-old Scott Greene had committed elder abuse against his mother by “hitting and financially exploiting” her. Investigators say Greene is suspected in the ambush-style attacks early Wednesday that killed two officers.

Statesmen Drop Rival Vikings To Advance To Heart Quarters

Des Moines–The William Penn women’s soccer team will fight to see another day after claiming a 2-1 instant-classic overtime victory over #8 seed Grand View in a Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Play-In Game Tuesday.

With the win, the ninth-seeded Statesmen (7-10-1) move on to Friday’s quarterfinal round to face top-seeded and #12 Benedictine in Atchison, Kan. at 7 p.m.  In the first meeting between the two programs, BC defeated WPU 4-0 on October 15 in Oskaloosa.

On Tuesday, neither side was able to beat the opposing goalkeeper in a scoreless first half.  Shortly into the second period, however, Graciela Belmontes (Sr., Salinas, Calif., Biology) broke the tie with an unassisted goal at the 50:53 mark.

Unfortunately, the host Vikings (10-7-2) were awarded a penalty kick and managed the equalizer in the 71st minute. The final 19 minutes were again void of a tally as the programs were forced into overtime for the second time this year (they tied 1-1 on September 28).

But, just 1:14 into the extra period, Mariah Voight (So., La Mesa, Calif., Sociology/Psychology) sent the visitors off the pitch victorious with her own unassisted goal.  It capped quite a day for Voight as earlier in the afternoon she was selected as a third-team all-Heart performer.

Not only was the win huge in extending the 2016 season, it is also the squad’s first triumph over Grand View since October 28, 2006, snapping a streak of 13 games in the series without a win.

The Statesmen outshot the Vikings 11-10 with Camila Parra (Sr., Brisbane, Australia, Exercise Science) finishing with a team-high three shots.  Adriana Borjon (Sr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) stopped six shots in the win as well.

“Tonight was all about the team and playing for each other,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said.  “As a team, we made things happen for each other and that ultimately carried us past a very good Grand View side.”

“This is the first time we have beaten Grand View in a number of years, so it was great for us to do it at this stage in the season and during this season with so many seniors,” McGowan added.  “The support tonight was fantastic with family, alumni, and students from William Penn all making a lot of noise and willing us on to the result.  Thank you to everyone!”

Eastwood Notches POW Award

Oskaloosa–Walter Eastwood (Sr., Garden City, Mo., Computer Science) had a great showing last Saturday, capped off by the game-winning takeaway, and his efforts helped him be named Heart of America Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week Monday.

Eastwood, a first-time weekly recipient, posted a team-high nine tackles (four solos) and intercepted a pass in the final two minutes to lead the Statesmen in a 19-14 upset over then-#22 Benedictine.

The senior played a big part in limiting the Ravens to just 182 passing yards on 15 completions; BC entered averaging 248.9 passing yards per game.

For the year, Eastwood, who missed two games with injury, has tallied 33 tackles (14 solos, 2.5 for loss) and three interceptions.

The award is the third of the year for William Penn.
