Oskaloosa Makes Quick Work Of Mount Pleasant, In Regional Finals

Tuesday was another busy night in area volleyball, as several area teams looked to punch tickets to the regional finals in Class 3A and 4A.

In a match heard on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com, the Oskaloosa Indians cruised past a short-handed Mount Pleasant squad on the road, 3-0. Osky won by scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 25-12.

Oskaloosa now moves into the Class 4A Region 6 Final where they will play #3 Marion, who dispatched Grinnell in straight sets. Marion is 33-9 on the season, and defeated Oskaloosa in their only meeting back in a tournament in Cedar Rapids on September 3rd. The scores were 25-18 and 25-12.

Oskaloosa will enter that match at 16-22, but the Indians are playing their best volleyball of the season and are looking for one more road win to move to the state tournament. That match is in Marion at 7 PM on Monday night. The game will be broadcast on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, the KMZN mobile app, and radiokmzn.com with the pregame starting around 6:45.

In other Class 4A action, top-ranked Pella was challenged and dropped the first set, but eventually roared back to eliminate Carlisle at home, 3-1. The Lady Dutch will now face conference foe Norwalk, who swept Winterset. Pella defeated Norwalk in both matches between the teams this year. That game will be in Pella Monday night at 7 PM.

Class 3A also saw a pair of area teams move into the regional finals.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont held off Centerville on the road in a five-set thriller, 3-2. The win avenges a five-set loss to Centerville earlier this season. The Rockets are now just one win away from clinching their fourth consecutive trip to state, this time as a 3A school.

Their opponent in the Region 5 Final will be #1 Union, who is now 37-4 and on a 15-match winning streak. The two teams have not played this season. That matchup will be in Montezuma on Monday at 7 PM.

Davis County was also a road winner in five sets, defeating Central Lee, 3-2. The Mustangs will face #5 Mount Vernon in Washington on Monday looking to surprise their way to state out of Class 3A Region 8.

The next night of volleyball action is Thursday, when Class 1A and 2A settle their regional semifinals.

Two area teams are looking to get one step closer to state: Pella Christian and Pekin.

PC is heading to Truro to face Central Decatur at 7 PM in the Region 5 semis, while Mediapolis will host Pekin at 7 PM in the Region 8 semis. Pella Christian has not faced Central Decatur this year, while Mediapolis swept Pekin in their lone meeting back on September 8th.

Kenny Chesney And Pink Hit #1

Kenny Chesney’s duet single with Pink, “Setting The World On Fire,” tops the Billboard Country Airplay and Mediabase Country Airplay charts this week, giving Kenny his 29th career #1 song. Celebrating another chart-topper is exciting in its own right, but having Country Radio respond to Pink the way they have makes Kenny even more proud. He says, “I think when you bring an artist into country, you need to play to their strengths, but you also want them to feel caught up in what we do.”

·       The song has already spent two weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, which combines streaming, sales and airplay, and is currently making its way up the Hot AC charts as well.

Team Penske’s Joey Logano Storms Into The Semifinal Round

Team Penske’s Joey Logano stormed into the semifinal round of the 2016 Chase on Sunday with another victory at Talladega Superspeedway.  He put the Number-22 Ford in front for good late in the race and kept it there over the final forty-five laps to notch his sixteenth career victory and second this season.  Logano also won last fall’s race on the sprawling two-point-six-six-mile Alabama oval and is just the second driver in fourteen years with back-to-back victories in this event.  Clint Bowyer is the last one to do it, in 2010 and 2011.  Richard Petty Motorsports rookie Brian Scott challenged Logano down the stretch but fell twelve one-hundredths of a second short at the checkered flag.  Denny Hamlin finished third to lead a parade of four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers into the Round of Eight.  Kurt Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Junior completed the top five.  Pole sitter Martin Truex Junior led only two laps before retiring with engine failure midway through the first half of the race.  His fortieth-place finish eliminated Truex from the post-season Chase.  He’s joined on the sidelines by Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski – who also was knocked out by engine failure on Sunday, after leading a race-high ninety laps.  Dillon finished the Round of Twelve tied with Hamlin for the eighth and final transfer spot but lost the tiebreaker, based on a driver’s best finish in the current round of the post-season.  Dillon’s was sixth last weekend at Kansas Speedway, Hamlin’s was third on Sunday … Yesterday’s race went four laps past its scheduled distance because of a late caution for Alex Bowman’s spin.

Keith Urban Explains Why He Dropped Out Of High School

With Keith Urban being the child prodigy he was, he knew that he wanted to pursue music from a very young age. At the time Urban was a teenager his path seemed so straight-forward that finishing the rest of high school didn’t seem to play into the cards. Keith would end up dropping out of school at the age of 15, and in a recent interview with The Arizona Republic, the singer says he has no regrets for doing so. In fact, when asked if ever thinks that he should’ve stayed in school, Urban says, “No. There were points where I wish I had quit sooner.”

It’s On To Talladega Speedway

On the track, it’s on to Talladega Superspeedway, as the second half of the post-season Chase kicks off with Sunday’s Hellmann’s 400.  The twelve remaining title contenders are traveling along a path that will ultimately lead to a championship for one with 1,576.08 “Miles-2-Miami” left before Ford Championship Weekend in November … and elimination for four others after Sunday’s race.  Recent wins by Chevrolet drivers Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick have moved them into the next round.  Joey Logano and Austin Dillon are presently tied for the final transfer spot into the Round of Eight that opens October 30th at Martinsville Speedway.
