William Penn Swept By Grand View Again

Des Moines–The Statesmen baseball team struggled in the opener and then unfortunately could not hold a late lead in the nightcap as it was swept by Grand View in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday.

WPU (19-19, 9-14 Heart) lost by scores of 14-2 and 7-6.

Johnny Valdez (Jr., San Jacinto, Calif., Business Management) provided the two big hits for the visitors in the first matchup, driving in a run on a third-inning double and bringing in another on a seventh-inning triple.

Valdez and Robert Phiakeo (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) both finished 2-for-4.

Grand View (22-10, 18-6 Heart), which outhit WPU 17-8, countered with two huge innings, including seven runs in the second and six more in the fourth.

Tyler Martinez (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Sociology) ended the game with a pair of strikeouts.

The second outing witnessed the navy and gold post a big number this time, tallying five runs in the first frame.  Steven Sattz (Sr., Pickering, Ontario, Physical Education) had an RBI single, while Valdez brought in the second run on a sacrifice fly.

It was Dominik Sawyer (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Psychology and Human Services) who had the biggest impact, though, as he produced three runs on his second home run of the season.

GVU answered right back with two runs in the bottom half, but William Penn extended its advantage to 6-2 on a J.P. Rios (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) run-scoring single in the fifth inning.

Unfortunately, the rest of the afternoon belonged to the Vikings as they tied the contest at 6-6 in the sixth and then won it in the seventh.  WPU nearly forced the nightcap into extra play with back-to-back force outs at home, but could not record the third and final out.

Sawyer and Colton Johnson (Jr., Westminster, Calif., Physical Education) both finished 3-for-4, while Javier Gonzalez (Jr., Lakeside, Calif., Physical Education) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Daniel Macias (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Physical Education) walked twice in the setback as well.

Marshall Siordia (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology and Psychology) struck out six in the loss.

“We were simply swept by a much better team today,” Head Coach Mike Laird said.  “Again, we failed to make some basic plays and frequently pitched from behind.  Daniel Macias was tremendous on defense in center field.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host Hannibal-LaGrange in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

WPU Claims Pair of One-Run Victories

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen softball team has been on the losing end of several close games this spring, but on Sunday the program reversed its fortunes with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Mount Mercy.

WPU (19-24), which won by scores of 5-4 and 4-3, is now 5-1 in its last six contests.

The Mustangs (14-20) tallied the day’s first run in the top of the third, but Chyanne Koko (So., Waianae, Hawaii, Business Management) matched that run in the bottom half with a double that plated Kodee Johnson (Jr., Stockton, Calif., General Mathematics).

The hosts then pulled out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth.  Johnson brought in Vernon on a single and Marissa Pereyra (Sr., Fullerton, Calif., Exercise Science) touched home on a single via Jarrah Jensen (Jr., Blakesburg, Iowa, Physical Education).  Johnson also came around on the play courtesy of an MMU error.

Mount Mercy was the one with the answer this time around, posting three tallies in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.

Fortunately, the navy and gold managed the final run when, after WPU packed the bases in the sixth, Kayla Browning (Jr. Spring Valley, Calif., Biology) earned her way on and sent Breann Robertson (Fr., Rainier, Wash., Human Services and Sociology) in on a hit-by-pitch.

Johnson posted a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored, while Pereyra and Taylor Vernon (So., Tracy, Calif., Biology) were each 2-for-3.  The Statesmen owned a 9-7 advantage in hits.

Elizabeth Whitaker (Jr., Azalea, Ore., Exercise Science) earned the win in relief; the junior managed three strikeouts in three frames of work.  Koko had one strikeout in the start, while permitting just one run in four innings.

William Penn scored in its initial at-bats of the nightcap when Koko doubled home Johnson in the first frame.  Mount Mercy then tallied all three of its runs in the third and stayed on top for the next two innings.

The hosts clawed back in one run at a time.  First, it was Jensen singling in Johnson in the third, then Hayley Freestone (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) scored on a single by Siarra Velasquez (Sr., Carter Lake, Iowa, Biology) in the fourth.

The rally was capped in walk-off fashion.  After loading the pads with two outs, Pereyra stepped to the plate and crushed a single to the right-center fence to plate Johnson with the winning run.

Highlighted by Johnson’s 3-for-4 effort, WPU owned an 11-10 edge in hits.  Robertson also had a multi-hit showing by going 2-for-2.

Whitaker notched her second win of the day with five strikeouts and no walks in a complete game.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Olathe, Kan. Monday to face MidAmerica Nazarene in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.

NASCAR X-Finity Series Visits Thunder Valley

The NASCAR X-Finity Series visits “Thunder Valley” this weekend for Saturday afternoon’s Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300, the opening race in the revamped “Dash for Cash” promotion. Traditional qualifying will set the forty-car field for each of the four races that will be part of the program this year: Saturday at Bristol, April 23rd at Richmond International Raceway, May 14th at Dover International Speedway and July 23rd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After qualifying, the drivers will be split into two fifty-lap heat races of twenty cars each. The top two finishers in each heat race who are eligible to collect X-FINITY Series points will then compete for a one hundred thousand-dollar bonus in the main event, which will go to the highest finisher among those four competitors. All forty original qualifiers will race in the points-paying main event, but only the top two eligible finishers in each of the heat races will be in line to collect the Dash for Cash bonus.

Next Stop Bristol Motor Speeday

Next stop Bristol Motor Speedway for Sunday’s Food City 500, eighth race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series and the second of six short-track races on the schedule. Matt Kenseth is the defending winner. Last year, Kenseth started from the pole and also went to Victory Lane – becoming the first driver to win the track’s spring race from the Number-1 starting spot since Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace in 1999 … The burning question this weekend? Can anyone cool off a red-hot Kyle Busch? The reigning Sprint Cup champion has back-to-back weekend sweeps – winning the last two Cup Series races, a Camping World Truck Series event at Martinsville Speedway and last weekend’s X-FINITY Series race in Texas. Busch has seventeen Bristol wins across NASCAR’s three national series: five Sprint Cup victories, eight in the X-FINITY Series and four Truck Series wins.

The engine will be available for response as soon as OFD can outfit it with the appropriate tools, supplies, and equipment necessary.

MidAmerican Announces $3.6 billion Wind Turbine Project

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines-based MidAmerican Energy Company says it plans to spend $3.6 billion on a wind turbine operation that will generate up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity.
Bill Fehrman, the utility’s CEO and president, announced the project Thursday at an event in Des Moines attended by Gov. Terry Branstad and other state officials. Officials say the wind farm will be the largest economic development project in the state’s history.
Fehrman says when the project is completed, the utility will generate wind energy that equals 85 percent of its annual customer sales in Iowa. MidAmerican is the state’s largest utility.
MidAmerican didn’t release where the new turbines would be erected but says the utility will finalize locations while the Iowa Utilities Board considers the project.
