Ottumwa Police Introducing Automated Speed Enforcement

The Ottumwa Police Department is introducing automated speed enforcement to the streets of Ottumwa.   Ottumwa is using the new technology as a tool to enforce posted speed limits with the goal of reducing the amount of speeding violations and increasing the safety of the community.
The City of Ottumwa has partnered with RedSpeed™ USA Corp. of Lombard,  Illinois to equip the Police Department with a mobile enforcement vehicle equipped with speed monitoring cameras.   The vehicle uses radar to measure the speed of every vehicle that passes the camera within the enforcement zone.  If a passing vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the equipment photographs and documents the violation.   After the violation is reviewed and approved by an Ottumwa Police Officer, a citation, including the violation photos and the vehicle’s speed, will be sent to the registered owner.
Ottumwa Police Chief Tom McAndrew said, “Speeding is one of the issues we hear about often.  I believe this equipment will help deter dangerous driving behavior.   RedSpeed provides the vehicle and equipment at no cost to the local taxpayers.”
The Ottumwa Police Department will be training with the equipment and testing the system for the next 30 days.  During this time, the vehicle will be parked at various locations around town monitoring traffic speed. No citations will be issued during this time, only warnings.
The locations for enforcement and additional information about the program will be posted on the City of Ottumwa website at cityofottumwa.com.

PCM Splits With Gilbert

The PCM Girls picked up a big road win last night beating Gilbert 56-47, the boys however, not so lucky as they fell to the Tigers 58-46.  The game was heard live on our Area Game of the Week coverage on KBOE.  The Mustang girls trailed 9-6 after one quarter but came storming back in the 2nd quarter to gain a 22-20 halftime lead.  It was still anybody’s game after three quarters as PCM clung to a 1 point lead, but a big fourth quarter allowed the Mustangs to get the win.  Jayci Vos was hot in the first half with 10 points, but held to only two in the second half,  however Kayla Jennings had a huge second half scoring 22 of her game leading 26 points to lead PCM to victory.  PCM improved to 11-5 in the heart of Iowa Conference while Gilbert slipped to 12-4.

The boys’ game was tight after one quarter as P-C-M led 10-9, but it was all Gilbert from there as they outscored P-C-M 20-7 in the second quarter and the Mustangs never climbed back in.  P-C-M’S leading scorer Logan Gilman, who averages 21 points per game, was held scoreless in the first half, although he finished with 11 points, but Luke Greiner picked up the slack scoring 18 points to lead the Mustangs.  With the win Gilbert locked up the Heart of Iowa Conference title improving to 14-4 overall and 12-3 in HOIC play while PCM slipped to 13-7 and 10-5 falling to 3rd place in conference play

Oskaloosa Girls Get Huge Upset Win Over Norwalk

The Oskaloosa Indians faced off against Norwalk in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader, and a couple of classic games were the result.

In a big surprise, the Oskaloosa girls battled through foul trouble and a slow second half to get their first conference win of the season, 53-51 over Norwalk. Oskaloosa had their best half of the season in the first half, outscoring the Warriors 31-19. Norwalk really amped up the full court pressure in the second half and forced Oskaloosa into several mistakes, but could never take the lead despite tying the game on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter.

Alexis Westercamp led the Indians with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Lindsey Holmberg got her first varsity start in place of Paige Howard, who was battling an illness. Holmberg did not disappoint, scoring 8 points, with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a game-high four steals. Fellow freshman Marleigh DenBerger had a big game off the bench for Osky, scoring 9 points and grabbing a game-high 8 rebounds.

Norwalk was without leading scorer Tori VanVelzen, who was out with a leg injury. Oskaloosa held second-leading scorer Miranda Hughes to just 11 points and 6 rebounds. Osky’s girls are now 3-17. Norwalk is 8-10.

In the boys’ game, Oskaloosa didn’t get the offense clicking until they were down by 21 points in the third quarter as Norwalk looked like a well-oiled machine in a 66-58 victory over the Indians.

Osky did a great job taking care of the ball, committing only 8 turnovers, but could not get into an offensive rhythm shooting the ball. Jarad Kruse led the Indians with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Jack Moore added 12.

Norwalk had 21 points in the first six minutes of the second half and rode that big run to the finish line as Osky battled back with a 22 point fourth quarter. The Warriors were led by sophomore stud Luke Vaske, who had 15 points and 6 assists. Michael Geistler had 16 points to lead the scoring attack for Norwalk. Cade Moritz and Matt Guessford each had 10.

Oskaloosa falls to 6-13 on the season, while Norwalk is now 13-5.

Oskaloosa is next in action on Friday night at home against archrival Pella. The coverage begins with the Brown’s Shoe Fit Basketball Countdown on 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN, as well as radiokmzn.com at 5:30 PM. The girls’ game kicks off the doubleheader around 6:15.

Newton Jury Finds Man Guilty Of Aiding In Wife’s Murder

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — A Newton jury has convicted a man of helping his mother stab his wife to death in 2013.

Jurors handed over the verdict finding 40-year-old Dustin Jefferson guilty of aiding and abetting first-degree murder in the death of his wife.

His mother, Ginger Jefferson, is serving life in prison for first-degree murder in the September 2013 attack of 32-year-old Kerry O’Clair Jefferson.

The trial is the state’s third attempt to convict Dustin Jefferson. His first two trials were both in Tama County. The first ended during jury selection and jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict in the second trial.

The trial moved to Newton after a judge granted a change of venue.

NASCAR Implements Team Owner Charter Agreement For NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 9, 2016) – During a historic event held today in Charlotte, N.C., NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France joined with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team owners to announce a landmark long-term agreement that provides teams with increased business certainty and the ability to work more closely with NASCAR to produce best-in-class racing.

In effect as the 2016 NASCAR season prepares to kick off this weekend, the new Charter system addresses three key areas – participation, governance and economics – to promote a more predictable, sustainable and valuable team business model. The agreement grants NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Charters to 36 teams, establishes a Team Owner Council that will have formal input into decisions, and provides Charter teams with new revenue opportunities including a greater interest in digital operations.

“Today represents a landmark change to the business model of team ownership in NASCAR,” France said. “The Charter agreements provide nine years of stability for NASCAR and the teams to focus on growth initiatives together with our track partners, auto manufacturers, drivers and sponsors. The Charters also are transferable, which will aid in the development of long-term enterprise value for Charter members.”

The system affords Charter teams that remain in good standing more predictable revenue over the nine years of the agreement. Along with improved financial certainty, the new framework is designed to increase the long-term market value of teams and provide the ability to plan farther ahead with existing, new and prospective partners.

Similar to the five-year sanctioning agreements that NASCAR begins with tracks in 2016, team owner Charter agreements allow for longer planning cycles around competition, innovation, digital marketing, governance and research and development.

“The new Charter program strengthens each of our businesses individually and the team model as a whole, which is good for NASCAR, our fans, drivers, sponsors and the thousands of people who we employ,” said Rob Kauffman, co-owner of Chip Ganassi Racing. “This will give us more stability and predictability, and it will allow us to take a more progressive, long-term approach to issues.

“NASCAR and the teams share a desire to preserve, promote and grow the sport and ultimately produce great racing for our fans and partners. These common goals served as the foundation for discussions and helped bring us to this unprecedented agreement. This is a great step forward for the entire sport made possible by Brian France setting a new course for the NASCAR industry and the owners coming together on shared issues. Everyone involved then compromised a bit to be able to come up with something that worked for all.”

Each Charter team owner has a guaranteed entry into the field of every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points race. To maintain the historical openness of NASCAR racing, the balance of the field will be open for team owners who do not hold Charters. These Open team owners will compete for the remaining starting spots and positions in the race, as each event in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ starting lineup shifts in 2016 to a 40-car field.

“The new team owner agreements will offer a more appealing environment for both current and prospective team owners at the NASCAR premier series level,” France said. “I’ve always stressed that if we can do things to improve the business of our stakeholders, we will pursue it. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished today with this agreement.”
