Folds Of Honor Quik-Trip 500

Jimmie Johnson pulled away from the field on an overtime restart Sunday and was first to the white flag as a four-car accident unfolded along the backstretch – ending the race under caution and leaving Johnson with his seventy-sixth career win that ties the late Dale Earnhardt for seventh place all-time. Most of the race was caution-free with just one yellow flag in the first 323 laps. With Johnson in the lead less than two laps from completion of the scheduled distance, Ryan Newman’s spin brought out just the second caution of the day that would force overtime. Johnson pushed his Number-48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in front of Kyle Busch coming out of the final restart, and put some distance between himself and the defending series champion before the day’s final caution ended the race. Dale Earnhardt Junior finished second, giving Hendrick Motorsports a sweep of the top two spots.

Busch finished third, one position ahead of older brother Kurt – who had started from the pole. Carl Edwards completed the top five … Kevin Harvick started sixth and led a race-high 131 laps before settling for sixth place. Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin finished sixteenth in his bid to become the first driver with back-to-back season-opening victories in the Sprint Cup Series since Matt Kenseth in 2009.

Chase Elliott was the highest-finishing rookie in the forty-car field, running eighth … Sunday’s race marked the debut of NASCAR’s 2016 low-downforce rules package. It produced twenty-eight lead changes, identical to last year’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Maren Morris Talks Inspiration For Debut Single “My Church”

Maren Morris’ debut single “My Church” is nearing the top ten on the country charts and is a hit with country fans. She says, “‘My Church’ was inspired when I was on a drive. I feel like a lot of my song titles are inspired when I’m in the car. So I just wanted to write a song that didn’t feel preachy, but encapsulated that feeling of what I Feel is my version of church.

Jake Gallardo Gathers First USMTS Victory In Cajun Clash Finale

VIVIAN, La. (Feb. 27) — Jake Gallardo’s first USMTS triumph happened 875 miles from home Saturday night when he captured the feature win in the 5th Annual USMTS Cajun Clash presented by Horseshoe Bossier City.

Just five days shy of his 23rd birthday, the second-generation driver from Las Cruces, N.M., parlayed a front row start into a wire-to-wire win in the 50-lap finale at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La.

“After the weekend we’ve had so far, this is sure a good way to end it,” said Gallardo, who failed to advance to the main event on Thursday or Friday. “We’ll take this one.”

A trio of early-race cautions slowed the momentum early on, but after the 13th lap the green remained out until the yellow returned with six laps to go when fifth-running Cade Dillard slowed with a flat tire.

After another quick caution before a lap could be completed, the race resumed with fellow New Mexico racers Stormy Scott and Johnny Scott trailing Gallardo and looking for a way around but Gallardo nailed a flawless restart and rode his momentum for the last six laps to score the $4,000 winner’s share of the prize money.

“The cautions actually helped me out quite a bit,” Gallardo admitted in victory lane. “I knew Stormy was right there and when we got to lapped traffic my line was so good I was worried about changing my lane to pass them. I think something broke on that final restart. I was just hanging on at the end.”

Sure enough, closer inspection revealed a broken pull bar on Gallardo’s No. J17 machine.

Stormy Scott, who dominated Thursday’s feature race, settled for the runner-up paycheck while twin brother Johnny remained third at the finish line.

Rodney Sanders was fourth and Chris Brown finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Ryan Gustin, Chris Henigan, Zack VanderBeek, Jason Hughes and Jason Ingalls.

Southern Culture On The Skids

This week’s semi-obscure artist o’ the week is Southern Culture On The Skids, (or as their fans call them, “S.C.O.T.S.” for short.)

This North Carolina trio has been kickin’ up dust since the early 1980s. Known for their pumped-up retro-rocka-psychobilly surf-country style and quirky fashion sense, they’re also known to toss fried chicken and banana pudding out into the audience from time to time during their live shows.

“Voodoo Cadillac”, live in 2004:

“Too Much Pork For Just One Fork”:

Here’s their very first music video, “Roadside Wreck”:

With song titles such as “Nashville Toupee”,  “Biscuit Eater”, “My House Has Wheels”, and “Carve That Possum”  they’re tongue is firmly in-cheek. They’re pretty prolific too, with 15 albums and several EPs under their belt..

They’re pure awesome-sauce with sprinkles. If they’re ever playing near your town, miss them at your peril.

Later, dudes!  – Bobbo     🙂

Indian Swimmers wrap up the 2015-2016 season

Oskaloosa Indian Boys Swim Team wrapped up their 2015-16 season.  The team this year moved up 9 spots on the power rankings in the state of Iowa and look to continue the climb next year.   The team had a lot of fun this year and were able to push themselves through some very long and grueling practices to come out better swimmers at the end of the season.

Dawson Sarver won the Most Valuable Swimmer award as he joined the swim team this year after taking a few years off and was a great addition to the program and was the only senior this year.  He was only a second away from being the first Indian swimmer to qualify for state in the 100 Breaststroke and has 3 of the Oskaloosa Records.

The Iron Man Awards went to Dawson Sarver, Jack Miller and Jarod Miller for not missing any practices this season and for making it to all of the meets during the year.

During the last 3 years of having an Oskaloosa swim team, records have been kept and this year’s team broke every one of them during the season.  Dawson Sarver ended the season holding the Indian record in the 50 Free with a time of 23.51, The 100 Free with a time of 53.34, and the 100 Breast in a time of 1:03.27.  Jack Miller now holds the records in the 100 Backstroke in a time of 1:02.41, and the 200 IM in a time of 2:19.46.  Jarod Miller holds the record in the 200 Free with a time of 2:08.05, and the 500 Free in a time of 5:48.19.  Finishing out the individual records is Carter Huyser who holds the record in the 100 Fly in a time of 1:01.36.  The Medley Relay (all 4 strokes) record and the 200 Free Relay records are held by Jack Miller, Dawson Sarver, Carter Huyser, and Nik Dykstra with a time of 1:49.88 in the Medley and a time of 1:39.85 in the Free.  The 400 Free Relay record is held is held by group of Carter Huyser, Jack Miller, Jarod Miller, and Dawson Sarver in a time of 3:47.12.

All 11 swim team members Ean Beenken, Colton Berg, Sam Carmichael, Nik Dykstra, John Hammes, Carter Huyser, Jack Miller, Jarod Miller, Dawson Sarver, Jacob Spears and Connor Swim made it into the 50 Free Sub-30 Second Club this year and Nik, Jack and Dawson advanced into the Free Sub-25 second club.  Carter Huyser and Connor Swim made it into the Sub-30 Second club in the 50 Fly.  Jack made it into the Backstroke Sub-30 second club and Dawson Sarver made it into the Breaststroke sub 30 second club.  In the Free 60 second club Ean Beenken, Nik Dykstra, Carter Huyser, Jack Miller, Jarod Miller, Dawson Sarver and Connor Swim all received their awards with Carter and Dawson also advancing into the Sub-55 second club.  The 2 managers Darian Jaquez and Ellie Snyder also received t-shirts this year as they did an awesome job of keeping all of the stats for the year and timing the swimmers during practice.

With only one senior leaving and several more incoming freshmen joining the team next year the Indians are looking forward to continue moving the bar higher.

Police In Iowa Using Social Media Tools To Connect

(Information in the following story is from: Iowa City Press-Citizen, http://www.press-citizen.com/)

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police officers in Iowa are finding ways to use social media tools to share information and connect better with the people they are trying to protect.

Iowa City police Officer Ashten Hayes tells the Iowa City Press-Citizen that when she was speaking at an elementary school recently, she took extra time to take pictures with the kids to post online.

Police in Iowa City, Coralville and at the University of Iowa all post on social media sites regularly and make use of Facebook, Twitter and Periscope.

University of Iowa police Community Outreach Officer Alton Poole says social media lets the department share serious information like pictures of suspects. But the department also uses it for light-hearted posts teasing Iowa State’s police and highlighting good deeds by officers.

Eggs and Issues 2-27-16

The fourth session of Eggs and Issues was held in a packed Smokey Row Coffee Shop in Oskaloosa Saturday morning at 8:30. This session highlighted local initiatives to discuss the Recreation and Early Childhood Development Center with Mark Willett, the community branding project with Aaron Riggs and Andrew Jensen, and the Caldwell Learning Center with Linda Fox and Dave Sedivec.

This session was handled differently, as the first half hour of discussion was dedicated to the three initiatives letting the community know what is happening with their respective projects.

Riggs and Jensen presented first, with Riggs stating one of the reasons as to why the Brand Leadership Team, or BLT, believes new branding would help Oskaloosa.

“Rather than people living here, earning a wage here, and then taking that money and spending it in a community outside of Oskaloosa, wouldn’t it be great if there were enough reasons and things to do in and around our town, that people could spend that money here locally and keep it here and grow our local economy as a result,” Riggs said.

Willett then spoke on the Recreation and Early Childhood Development Center. He said that losing the YMCA in the community would be devastating. He stated there are around 320 children in childcare between the YMCA, Webster, and Kids’ Corner in University Park.

Willett also described part of the plans for the new Recreation and Early Childhood Development Center. He said that it’s a nightmare to hold a swimming meet at the current YMCA because there are only four lanes. He said the new facility will have eight lanes in the competition pool, as well as areas to sit down and watch the meet. Willett went on to say that there will be a recreational pool in addition to the competition pool, so the competition pool can have cooler water and people can swim laps, and the recreation pool can have warmer water for those doing water workouts.

Fox and Sedivec spoke next on the Caldwell Learning Center. Fox said that kids learn the best by being able to experience, feel, and touch what’s around them. She then told the crowd what an Environmental Learning Center, or ELC, is.

“It’s a place where you can take nature, and you can make it work. You can show kids how to do things, and what things are in nature. They can have hands-on experience. They can go out in the field and come back into a mudroom, and experience what is going on,” said Fox.

Sedivec said that Mahaska County is a victim of its own success.

“We average over 12,000 program participants a year here in Mahaska County with one Naturalist and other staff helping out. To put that in perspective, that’s the same number of program participants that Linn County has with five Naturalists in the Cedar Rapids area,” said Sedivec.

Fox and Sedivec also said that the ELC is going to be larger than was first planned due to the mammoth bones that will be on display.

When it came time for the public to ask questions, there were some in the audience that were against the new branding of Oskaloosa.

Members of the community said that music has stood the test of time, and that Oskaloosa already has a brand and slogan. Jensen responded by saying that he believes Oskaloosa is more than just music.

“We absolutely celebrate our musical history, but Oskaloosa is much more than just music. In the time that I’ve been here, there are so many awesome things going on in Oskaloosa, and the question is how do we tie those things together,” stated Jensen.

Another member of the community broke the tension in the room.

“Granted I may have lived under a rock for the 27 years I’ve lived here, but I did not know this was known as the City of Music. Just saying,” said the community member.

One community member asked about the location of the ELC. Sedivec answered by saying it will be just to the east of Oskaloosa. He also said the ELC is in a great location, and he believes the location will help the local economy.

“You have the Lacey Sports Complex with all the kids and tournaments out there. In between games if people want to see the nature center and the mammoth bones, they have to go through town and they have to go past every restaurant, they have to go by gas stations and everything, so I think that’ll also help with the economic impact for the community,” Sedivec said.

There was also a question asked about whether or not the pool at Edmundson Park will be closed when the new Recreation and Early Childhood Development Center opened. Willett replied by saying it is all speculation, and also that there are no plans for an outdoor pool at the new facility.

The next session of Eggs and Issues will be with state officials, and it will be held on March 12th at 8:30 am at Smokey Row Coffee Shop in Oskaloosa.

Next Stop Atlanta Motor Speedway

Next stop Atlanta Motor Speedway  for Sunday’s Folds of Honor Quik-Trip 500, second race of the 2016 Sprint Cup Series. NASCAR is debuting its low-downforce rules package. The so-called “low-drag” aerodynamic specifications were tested twice last year, at Kentucky Speedway and Darlington Raceway.

Those races were won by Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards, respectively. Jimmie Johnson is the defending winner of Sunday’s race and has four career victories on the mile-and-a-half Georgia oval. He’s the last driver with back-to-back Cup Series wins there, sweeping both races in 2007 en route to the second of his record five straight championships. Bobby Labonte leads all active drivers with six wins at A-M-S, the last of those coming in 2003.

Chevrolet and Toyota have combined to win the last six Cup Series races in Atlanta. Ford hasn’t gone to Victory Lane there since 2008 … Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin is bidding to become the first Cup Series driver to open a season with back-to-back victories since Matt Kenseth in 2009.
