WPU Narrowly Misses Silver At Season Opener

A pair of solid rounds landed the Statesmen men’s golf team in bronze position as it opened the fall by hosting the Midwest Collegiate Open Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn placed third out of seven teams with a two-day tally of 604 (300-304) at The Preserve GC–a par-72 layout. Iowa Western CC took the team crown at 580 (283-297), while Des Moines Area CC held off the navy and gold by one shot at 603 (294-309).

Despite being a handful of strokes behind the winner, Spencer Skipper (Sr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) carded two great efforts with a 71-73–144 to tie for second.

Frederik Lundsgaard (So., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) was just outside the top 10, tying for 11th at 150 (74-76), and John Baumunk (Jr., Sherrard, Ill., Business Management) made his Statesmen debut in a tie for 17th at 155 (75-80).

Justin Bothma (Sr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management) shot a pair of 80’s (160 total) to tie for 27th. Brandon Dizon (Jr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) was only able to post one round, tallying a 75 on Tuesday.

Two more WPU teams were in action at The Preserve as well as the ‘C’ team edged the ‘B’ group. The C team was fifth at 627 (313-314), while the B team was sixth at 638 (319-319).

Joshua Snyman (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa) headed the entire crew in a tie for 11th at 150 (77-73), while Zach Swink (Jr., Burlington, Iowa) also snuck into the top 20 (19th) at 156 (79-77).

Ben Roberts (Sr., Albia, Iowa, Industrial Technology) was 21st at 157 (75-82), while Ethan Powers (Sr., Tipton, Iowa, Business Management), at 80-79–159, and Kyle Hashimoto (Jr., Acampo, Calif., Undecided), at 76-83–159, shared 25th place.

Peter Frederiksen (So., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering) placed 29th at 162 (80-82), Rory Schafer (So., Solwezi, Zambia) was 30th at 163 (84-79), Bradley Hamilton (Fr., Earlham, Iowa) concluded in a tie for 31st at 166 (81-85), Charlie Hayes (Jr., Whitesboro, Texas, History/Government) finished tied for 33rd at 167 (86-81), and Cade Hartman (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) tied for 35th at 168 (88-80).

Next Up: William Penn is off nearly two weeks, returning to action on September 12-13 at the Clarke Classic in Peosta. Play will be contested at Thunder Hills Country Club.

Grassley Seeks Update Into Iowa Man’s Missouri Drowning

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says he wants an update on the investigation into a 2014 drowning of a handcuffed Iowa man who fell from a patrol boat in the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Iowa senator says in a letter Wednesday to a special prosecutor in Missouri that he wants the current status of the investigation into Brandon Ellingson’s May 2014 death. Grassley says he wants to know a timetable for determining whether any criminal charges will be filed.

The 20-year-old Ellingson, of suburban Des Moines, was handcuffed and in the custody of a state trooper when he fell from the boat and drowned.

Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, forwarded the letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch. He says he wants an update on his inquiry by October.

Statesmen Drop Home Opener 3-1

Driven by a raucous home-opening crowd, the William Penn volleyball competed throughout, but came up short in a 3-1 setback to Waldorf in non-conference action Tuesday.

WPU (1-6) lost by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 19-25 and was outhit .191-.158. Behind 13 kills and a .355 hitting clip by Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology), the home squad battled in each and every set.

The first set witnessed six ties and the navy and gold leading 22-20, but the Statesmen permitted five unanswered to fall behind 1-0.

A total of 13 ties were recorded in the see-saw second set, but this time around William Penn held off the Warriors (2-5). An early 7-3 advantage in the third round gave way to another tense battle that Waldorf eventually captured.

The Statesmen were again in control in the fourth as they attempted to knot up the contest. Unfortunately, their 15-11 edge went by the wayside and WC finished off the victory.

Erika Getz (Sr., Parsons, Kan., Physical Education) managed seven kills and Justine Arguelles (Fr., Ventura, Calif., Biology) added six winners to complement Hartman, while Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) (22 assists) and Haley Smith (Fr., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education) (11) were a solid 1-2 punch at setter. Danielle Breeher (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) served up two of her team’s four aces.

Defensively, Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) finished with 15 digs and Arguelles came up five block assists.

“The good thing is we were in each set, but we just continue to struggle in finishing off our opponents,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said. “We will keep working on late-game situations and hopefully we will start being on the other end of these tight ones.”

Next Up: William Penn is off the rest of the week, returning to action next Wednesday by traveling to Fayette, Mo. to face Central Methodist in its Heart of America Athletic Conference opener at 7 p.m.
