Harvick’s Consistency Paving His Way Through Title Defense

Kevin Harvick’s remarkably consistent year continues as the 2014 Sprint Cup Series champion rolls on in defense of his crown, entering the final three months of the season. With his tenth runner-up finish of the year, last weekend at Bristol, Harvick became the first driver with double-digit second-place finishes in a single season since Bobby Allison in 1972 … Harvick has twenty-one top tens this year in his twenty-four starts, including victories at Las Vegas and Phoenix International Raceway.

Joey Logano is second with eighteen top-ten finishes … With just two races remaining in the regular season, Harvick is actually ahead of his championship pace of a year ago. At this point in 2014, he was seventh in the standings – 124 points behind leader Jeff Gordon on his way to earning the Number-6 seed on The Chase Grid … Next stop on the Sprint Cup schedule is the September 6th Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Harvick is the defending winner.

The Statesmen women’s golf team looks to transfer its recent dominant play into a new conference as it opens the 2015-2016 season.

William Penn, winners of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships the last two seasons, finished last year in 12th place at the NAIA National Championships. Gone may be Maggie Yang, the most decorated player in program history, but Head Coach Nik Rule returns three players who have all-league honors on their resume. The coaching staff also brought in arguably its best recruiting class ever as WPU looks to push even higher up the national rankings.

With Yang’s graduation, Demi Coertze (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Digital Communication) steps into the team’s top spot. She should have no issues adjusting as her first three seasons at WPU all culminated in first-team all-MCC recognition. Coertze owned a 78.8 stroke average and won three tournament crowns last year.

Natalie Booton (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Elementary Education) enjoyed a breakout season as a junior (honorable-mention all-MCC pick, 82.0 avg.) and will complement Coertze well. Jing Yang (Sr., Woodland Hills, Calif., Biology) and Courtney Cunningham (Jr., Muskogee, Okla., Computer Science) have also spent many weekends traveling with the varsity and will be even bigger assets as upperclassmen.

Alexi Rule (Jr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Elementary Education) and Jodi Saito (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii, Education) have been on the cusp in the past and should fight for varsity spots, while fellow returners Brooke Fletcher (So., Atlantic, Iowa, Business Management), Jordan Postma (So., Marion, Iowa, Biology), and Aramina Flores (So., Corpus Christi, Texas, History/Government) look to continue their improvement as sophomores.

Not only is the incoming class large in size, it is also behemoth in talent as eight new bodies put on the navy and gold. Transfer Miranda Keeler (So., Plattsmouth, Neb., Communications) heads the group after earning league Newcomer of the Year honors at AIB.

Helene Larsen (Fr., Viborg, Denmark, Business Management), Sofie Lund (Fr., Herning, Denmark, Psychology), and Elise Warne (Fr., Balwin North, Australia, Exercise Science) are all making overseas treks to compete for WPU, while Americans Tiffany Duhon (Fr., Lafayette, La, Elementary Education), Alyssa Kerry (Fr., Bend, Ore., Communications), Megan Rhoads (Fr., Schertz, Texas), and Bailey Rimes (Fr., Niceville, Fla., Public Accounting) will begin their first collegiate seasons this fall.

Schedule/Conference

Three home events highlight the fall slate, beginning with the Midwest Collegiate Open on August 31-September 1 in Moravia. The Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Oklahoma City, Okla. will be the team’s last and toughest test as William Penn takes on some of the NAIA’s best programs. The Statesmen will enter the year as the Heart of America Athletic Conference favorite, while Baker took last year’s league crown.

Cup Series Win List Holding at 11

With Joey Logano’s victory Saturday night at Bristol, the list of Sprint Cup Series race winners this year is holding steady at eleven – one fewer than in 2014 – with just two races remaining in the regular season. Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson are tied for the series lead in wins with four apiece. Logano and Matt Kenseth are right behind at three each.

With a maximum of thirteen race winners now possible, the remaining spots in the sixteen-driver post-season field will be filled based on regular-season point standings … The five highest-placed non-winning drivers in the standings today are Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard, Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer – who leads Aric Almirola by thirty-five points for what would be the final spot on The Chase Grid with Kasey Kahne just two points further back.

Last year’s stepping-stone campaign is hopefully only the start of big things for the William Penn men’s golf program as the team readies for 2015-2016.

A year older and more experienced, the Statesmen linksters placed fourth at the 2015 Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships and Head Coach Steve Tucker is confident his team is prepared to battle for the top as William Penn moves to the Heart of America Conference.

Four letterwinners have left the program since last spring (three to graduation, one moving on to D-1 play), but the cupboard is still stocked with skilled swingers. Frederik Lundsgaard (So., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) and Spencer Skipper (Sr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) will lead the charge, while Brandon Dizon (So., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) and Clay Tucker (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) also figure into high-profile positions. Lundsgaard heads the navy and gold returners with a 75.3 average; the rest of the quartet also posted sub-79 scoring averages.

Not far behind and certainly expecting to push for varsity slots will be returners Kyle Hashimoto (Jr., Acampo, Calif., Undecided), Charlie Hayes (Jr., Whitesboro, Texas, History/Government), Ben Roberts (Sr., Albia, Iowa, Industrial Technology), Jeremy White (Jr., Baytown, Texas, Mechanical Engineering), Justin Bothma (Sr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management), Peter Frederiksen (So., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering), Ethan Powers (Sr., Tipton, Iowa, Business Management), Rory Schafer (So., Solwezi, Zambia), and Cade Hartman (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management).

Bothma and White averaged under 80 a year ago.

John Baumunk (Jr., Sherrard, Ill., Business Management) will make his first appearance in the navy and gold after redshirting last year, while newcomers Joshua Snyman (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa), Zach Swink (Jr., Burlington, Iowa), and Bradley Hamilton (Fr., Earlham, Iowa) will take successful prep and/or junior college careers into their initial Statesmen seasons.

Schedule/Conference

WPU opens up by hosting the Midwest Collegiate Open on August 31-September 1 in Moravia, while six tournaments follow in a busy fall. The Statesmen will also host the William Penn Classic in Oskaloosa on October 11-12. The squad concludes its autumn season playing against the best in the nation at the NAIA Preview in mid-October.

Fellow Heart newcomers Grand View and Mount Mercy should be the early league favorites, but Tucker sees William Penn making up ground on them and being a legitimate contender next April.

Organizers: Record 1.1M Visited Iowa State Fair This Year

An unofficial count of attendance at the Iowa State Fair this year indicates roughly 1.1 million people visited the fairgrounds, breaking a previous record.

Organizers say about 8,000 more people visited the fairgrounds in Des Moines this year than in 2008, the previous record holder.

There was extra media attention on the fair this year, as Democratic and Republican candidates seeking their party’s nomination delivered remarks from the well-known political soapbox.

Nearly every day of the 11-day event had attendance numbers that exceeded 100,000- though there were some rainy days. Attendance dropped to roughly 75,000 on Aug. 18 as heavy rain moved through the area.

Organizers say they will do a more formal count of tickets to determine the final total.
