Sanders Still Golden In Silver Dollar Nationals

Three weeks ago the USMTS closed up shop for a summer vacation with Rodney Sanders standing in victory lane. He was back at it again Friday night with a dominating win on the first night of the 5th Annual Silver Dollar Nationals at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.

Not even the redraw could stand in the way of ‘The Sandman’ as he used his pole position to evade any chance of a brush-up thwarting his path to victory. In fact, only a few other drivers got next to Sanders-that was while he was briefly lapping them.

Sanders started 13th in Saturday’s United States Modified Touring Series main event, but it took him just 15 laps to take the lead and speed to his second win of the weekend at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., during the 5th Annual Silver Dollar Nationals.

Sanders’s 59th career USMTS triumph was his sixth straight in the Silver Dollar Nationals, completing his third straight sweep at the Kosiski family’s crown jewel event at the high-banked 4/10-mile speedplant.

Outside front row starter Jeremy Payne held off polesitter Corey Dripps to lead the first lap, and then built a huge margin between himself and the field over the next eight laps.

A caution on lap 9 erased Payne’s advantage, and two laps after the restart Dereck Ramirez snuck underneath at the flagstand to lead lap 11.

However, the next yellow flag on lap 13 was for Ramirez who slowed quickly with a broken suspension, handing the lead over to Terry Phillips.

Phillips was able to fend off Sanders for one lap, but by lap 15 Sanders had control and never relinquished the lead again, pacing the final 20 laps to score another $3,000 paycheck.

Jason Hughes, who started four spots behind Sanders in 17th, came on strong late in the race and was actually faster than Sanders on the stopwatch but ran out of laps and had to settle for the runner-up finish for the second time in as many nights.

After starting fourth and finishing tenth Friday, USMTS rookie points leader Jesse Sobbing started tenth on Saturday and clawed his way to a third-place finish at the checkers ahead of Phillips.

Brian Green recorded his career-best USMTS finish in fifth, while Zack VanderBeek, Jordan Grabouski, Casey Arneson, Tyler Groenendyk and 21st-starting Daniel Hilsabeck rounded out the top 10.

Although he won from the pole on Friday, Sanders’s stellar run through the pack was nothing new at the I-80 Speedway for the 25-year-old from Happy, Texas.

In last year’s sweep, he came from eighth and twelfth, respectively, and his 2013 feature wins came from the fifth and fifteenth starting spots.

He is now just 12 wins shy of matching Ryan Gustin’s record of 71 career USMTS wins. With 24 race nights remaining on the 2015 calendar, few would be shock to see ‘The Rocket’ challenge for that third spot on the all-time wins list.

Ryan Hunter-Reay Continues Andretti Autosport Dominance at Iowa Speedway

Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay raced his way to Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane for the third time in four years Saturday night in the Iowa Corn 300. Hunter-Reay held off the field on a late restart to give Andretti Autosport its sixth consecutive win and its seventh in nine races at The Fastest Short Track on the Planet.

Josef Newgarden was second and rookie Sage Karam was a career-best third, putting Americans in the top three spots for the first time since the 2006 Indianapolis 500.

“My car was on rails until the end. I was driving the snot out of it. It was loose, and I just kept my foot to the floor,” Hunter-Reay said. “It was a lot of work in the cockpit. This was one we really had to work for.”

Verizon IndyCar Series championship leader Juan Pablo Montoya crashed out of the Iowa Corn 300 only 10 laps into the 300-lap race. Montoya, who led Scott Dixon by 54 points going into the race suffered his first DNF (did not finish) of the season. Ironically, the last time Montoya failed to finish a race was last year’s Iowa Corn 300 some 18 races ago.

But no one could make Montoya pay for his early misfortune. The crash threatened to put Montoya’s healthy lead in jeopardy — especially with Scott Dixon running strong. But Montoya’s lead dropped from just 54 points to 42 over Graham Rahal, who moved into second place in the championship standings.

Dixon finished 18th after a mechanical issue and fell to third in the standings, gaining just six points on Montoya.

“Not a big deal,” said Montoya. “Disappointed in our Verizon Chevy because we had a good car.”

Next up for the “Fastest Short Track on the Planet” is the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West combination race and the NASCAR XFINITY Series U.S. Cellular 250 presented by New Holland July 31-August 1. Midwestern tribute band, Rock Godz, will close out the 2015 NAPA Auto Parts Concert Series in style on Friday, July 31.

Iowa man faces $1 million bond in connection with 1995 death

A $1 million cash bond has been set for an Iowa man charged in a 1995 homicide.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports 54-year-old Steven John Klein appeared before a judge Saturday morning — one day after his arrest in Muscatine.
Authorities say Klein is responsible for the death of 38-year-old Susan Kersten, who he was romantically linked to.
Kersten’s charred remains were found inside her burning vehicle in a field near an Iowa highway in September 1995. Her death was initially believed to be accidental, but an autopsy determined she died of blunt force trauma to the head sustained before the fire.
Authorities have not yet said what led to Klein’s arrest.

Softball All-District Teams Announced, Including Several Area Honorees

The All-District Teams were announced in all five classes, and several area athletes were honored.

In Class 4A, Oskaloosa was represented by a pair of sophomores: Alexis Groet and Aubrey Miller. Groet had a phenomenal campaign in the circle and really hit the ball well late in the year. Miller led the Indians in batting and played a very good defensive second base. They are joined by Pella’s Sara Tallman, Knoxville’s Taylor Carter, Newton’s Sydney Jenkins, and Fairfield’s Brynna Bowman and Mackenzie McClure.

In Class 1A, Lynnville-Sully’s Stacey Alberts was honored as the South Central Coach of the Year. There were several area honorees in this district, led by a trio of Alberts’ players on the Hawks. Seniors Madison Rasmussen and Lysandra James were honored along with junior Kasiah Ehresman. Sigourney had a couple of members on the team after a great year as well, as senior Jordan Carter and freshman Autumn Barthelman were named to the team. Twin Cedars’ Bailey Dunkin, North Mahaska’s Emma Deucore, Melcher-Dallas’ Megan Roush, and Moravia’s Autumn McDanel and Emma McDanel round out the area players. Cardinal’s Alexis Adam was named to the Class 1A Southeast All-District Team.

In Class 2A, there were two area athletes named to the Southeast All-District squad. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont senior Sadie Baugher made the team, as did Pella Christian’s sophomore pitcher Emma Schnell.

In Class 3A, PCM had a couple of honorees in the Central District. Seniors Molly Vignovich and Racheal Freland were both honored. In the Southeast District, Mid-Prairie’s Alex Rath and Amber Kral were named to the team. They’ll both be back for their senior seasons next year. Albia’s Emma Dinneen and Centerville’s Lexi Riggall also were among the players on the team.

The softball state tournament begins in Fort Dodge next Monday.

Twin Cedars Dominates, Moves to District Final

On the Mahaska Zone Network, you heard Twin Cedars dominate Southeast Warren 13-1 to move into the District 12 Final. The Sabers had another night where the offense clicked, although it was a scenario where Southeast Warren had a hard time fielding the ball cleanly more than the Twin Cedars hitter were finding holes. There were seven hits in the game for the Sabers offense and seven errors committed by the Warhawks, who entered as the higher seed.

Although the final seemed lopsided, the game was tight until the fourth, as Southeast Warren plated the first run on a wild pitch in the third inning. In the fourth, Twin Cedars plated three unearned runs off of three defensive mistakes, and never looked back.

It was a great pitching outing from sophomore Trace Embray, as he pitched six innings of three-hit ball and allowed just one run. He struck out 11 in the game. His effort and the one inning of relief thrown by Spencer McCarty will allow senior superstar pitcher Otis Roby to throw in the district final.

The Sabers will face an old rival in Pleasantville, who has had their season ended the last two years by Twin Cedars as they made their way to state. That game is sure to be a good one, as Pleasantville enters the higher seed, but will have to beat Twin Cedars in Bussey Saturday night.

That game can be heard on 99.5 FM and AM 740 KMZN and on kboeradio.com with the pregame starting around 6:45 for the 7 PM first pitch.

Freedom Rock Finds Home at Caldwell Park

Mahaska County Freedom Rock organizers were elated July 14 when Bill and Ray’s Towing placed the rock that will be painted in its resting place at the site of the new Caldwell Park. The 11-ton rock will honor veterans of all conflicts. Caldwell Park will be the site of the new nature center and other outlets for Mahaska Conservation. The Freedom Rock rests atop the hill at the east end near Mahaska Veterinary Clinic.

The project, spearheaded by American Legion Auxiliary and a number of support organizations, will bring a rock to be painted by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II to life. Sorensen’s goal is to have a Freedom Rock in each county in Iowa. The original rock is located in Adair County one m le south of Interstate 80 at exit 86.

The rock came from near Eddyville and was donated by Ben Shinn of Eddyville.

Fundraising to cover costs of flagpoles, lighting, benches, landscaping, the painting and other expenses continue. For more information on how to participate or on the project itself, contact Kim Dixon, 2102 263rd Street, Oskaloosa or call 641-673-0220.
