(OSKALOOSA, Iowa) – William Penn University staff, faculty and students will ring in the start of the spring semester with the Dean’s Convocation on Thursday, January 18, at 11:15 a.m. in the main gymnasium of the Oskaloosa campus. William Penn welcomes Chicago native, Christina Fernandez-Morrow, as the keynote speaker.
Fernandez-Morrow moved to Des Moines in 2001 after accepting a public relations position with State Farm Insurance Co. She has worked in the non-profit world for most of her career and launched the Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines, the only agency in the state that focuses on leadership development for young Latinas.
While in Des Moines, Christina helped start a number of community organizations, including the Young Professionals Connection and Art Noir, where she was instrumental in kicking off their inaugural Hair Ball fundraiser. She was a founder of Iowa’s Latino Heritage Festival. Most recently, she started the Warren Morrow Latin Music Festival, named for her late husband who was also an active Des Moines resident and Latino advocate.
Among her recognitions for her community service, Christina was LATINA magazine’s Next Generation Latina award winner, featured in the Des Moines Registers’ “13 People to Watch in 2013”, and a 40 Under 40 award recipient.
Christina is currently serving as an educator at Des Moines University, where she creates live patient-simulated clinical examinations for medical students.

(OSKALOOSA, Iowa)–Eggs & Issues is back in action this Saturday, Jan. 13 from 8:30–9:30AM at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa. According to a news release sent by the Oskaloosa Area Chamber & Development Group, the first featured panel will consist of Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt and Mahaska County Supervisor Willie VanWeelden. Former Sen. Tom Rielly of Oskaloosa will act as moderator during this first Eggs & Issues event.
“Be sure to join us as we hear from our City and County Representatives,” reads the Chamber news release. “Join your friends and neighbors to thank these gentlemen for their service and to hear about all the great things that are going on with the local City and County governments.”
As has been the case during previous Eggs & Issues installations, the setting is informal and attendees are encouraged to personally meet and speak to their elected representatives. MidWestOne Bank will provide complimentary coffee during this event and the staff from George Daily Auditorium has volunteered to run the sound system.
The next Eggs & Issues is slated for Saturday, Jan. 27 at 8:30AM and will feature Iowa Senator Ken Rozenboom (R–Oskaloosa) and House Representative Guy Vander Linden (R–Oskaloosa). Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt will return to the forum on Jan. 27, however he will act only as a moderator and will not re-join the panel at that time.

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa) – The Mahaska County Conservation Board (MCCB) recently announced it will again hold its annual MCCB Bird Food Giveaway later this month.
On Saturday, Jan. 27, from 8:00AM–noon, visitors may take to the east side of the conservation center at Russell Wildlife in New Sharon to pick up cracked corn for feeding birds, free of charge. Although participants must bring their own buckets to fill, a news release sent by the Board states that staff will assist in both filling and carrying buckets.

The Mahaska County Conservation Board was established in January 1975. According to the MCCB website, the purpose of the Conservation Board is to provide quality parks, recreation, conservation, and environmental education opportunities for the public.
The five members of the Conservation Board are appointed by the Board of Supervisors for five year terms. They serve without pay, but receive their actual expenses incurred while carrying out their duties. The board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30PM, and public participation is welcomed.
The Mahaska County Conservation Board seeks to ensure that future generations have ample opportunity to enjoy parks, natural resources and the scenic beauty that Mahaska County has to offer.

(MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa)–Adan Dean Martin was born at 4:12 am on January 4, 2018, making him Mahaska Health Partnership’s 2018 New Year’s Baby.
Adan weighed 6 lbs., 7 oz., and was 20 inches long. His parents are Patricia Snook and Travis Martin of Sigourney. His grandparents are Tim and Faye Snook of Oskaloosa and Crystal and the late Larry Martin of Sigourney. His great grandparents are James and Bonnie Handeland of Eddyville and Wallis and the late Beverly Lippard of What Cheer.
Adan was delivered by Family Practice Physician Shawn Richmond, MD. He was not due until mid-January, so being the New Year’s Baby was a big surprise for the family. Big brother Joshua, 4, has warmed up to the idea of a little brother.
“He’s healthy, that is what we are most happy about,” Patricia said. “Both of my children were born here at Mahaska Health Partnership. With Joshua, the Birthing Center had just opened. It’s as wonderful as I remembered!”
As MHP’s first baby of 2018, Adan received a basket full of gifts from MHP and Whispering Tree Gifts, the Hospital Auxiliary’s gift shop located just inside Entrance #4 on the MHP campus.

(Pella, Iowa) – It was another banner night for the Oskaloosa Boys Basketball Team as they finally got their elusive win over the Pella Little Dutch. The sweetness of this win is compounded by the fact that it was on the road and by a decisive margin, 72-45.
The game was sloppy on the outset, as both teams had struggles getting into their groove. Oskaloosa would get a couple long balls from Tanner DeKock to take an early 17-7 lead after the first quarter.
In the second, the Indians started to push toward a run with Jarad Kruse heating up with 10 points in quick fashion. The Osky defense was stingy, but a steady push from Landon VanderLeest kept Pella within striking distance. The halftime score was 37-23 in favor of the Indians.
The third quarter saw Osky push the lead to 20 but Pella battled back to keep it at a 14 point margin heading into the fourth, 52-38.
Osky ran away with the game in the fourth, outscoring the Dutch 20-7. A few more Cole Henry dishes to Jarad Kruse finished the game with the 72-45 final score.
Kruse led the way for the Indians with 20 points. Henry had 14 points to go along with a game-high 11 assists and five rebounds. Spencer Tucker was also in double figures with 13. Xavier Foster only scored six points, but had 12 rebounds, five steals, and three blocks in the game.
Pella was led by Landon VanderLeest, who finished with 14 points.
Oskaloosa improves to 11-0 as we pass the halfway point of the season. They are now 6-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Pella falls to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
The Osky girls were in action and struggled mightily against the #12 Lady Dutch. Pella got off to an 18-0 start in the first quarter and cruised to a 63-14 victory.
Osky was led by Marleigh Denburger with 7 points. Pella’s Emily Holterhaus led all scorers with 21 points.
Oskaloosa is now 0-10 on the year with an 0-6 mark in conference play. Pella is 8-3 overall with a 4-2 record in the Little Hawkeye.
Oskaloosa will be back in action on Friday night at home against Indianola in a conference doubleheader. The girls will tip-off at 6:15. The following is a news release sent to KBOE on behalf of the Oskaloosa Police Department:
(Oskaloosa, Iowa)–On Friday Jan. 5, 2018 the Oskaloosa Police Department obtained an arrest warrant charging Deon Damon Freeman, age 26, of Oskaloosa, Iowa with attempted murder. The defendant was later located at his residence and taken into custody on this charge. The charge of attempted murder stems from an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported December 19, 2017 shooting that occurred at the intersection of Pella Avenue and Green Street in Oskaloosa. During the shooting the defendant advised police officers that he fired six rounds from his handgun into the back of another vehicle that was occupied by two individuals.
The defendant was taken to the Mahaska County Jail and released into their custody with a $100,000 cash only bond. Attempted Murder is a class “B” felony punishable by up to 25 years in a state penitentiary.
This investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.
Criminal charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Oskaloosa Water Board of Trustees will meet today (Jan. 8) for a regular meeting at 4:00 PM. Routine agenda items are on the docket, such as approving the agenda, approving meeting minutes from December, and more. A customer forum will also be held, as well as discussion about an agreement for professional services with Garden & Associates for water system improvements on A Avenue West, Hwy 432, and North L Street.
Looking ahead, the board will discuss the proposed Fiscal Year 2018-2019 budget, talk about wastewater operations, and will receive an update from the general manager. Before adjourning, the meeting will focus on updates from member(s) of the Board.

On The Green Restaurant in Oskaloosa will close its doors for good on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, according to a post on the business Facebook page. Although the date has been set, guests are highly encouraged to keep checking the On the Green Facebook page in case that date changes.
“The Oskaloosa Golf Board will explore options for the building so it continues to provide value to visitors, families and businesses in the community,” said Frank Hansen, President of Oskaloosa Golf.
While On The Green may be closing, Friends of Oskaloosa Golf will continue to operate the golf course as a public facility through the 2018 golf season. In lieu of a restaurant/bar being open in time for golf season, the news release stated that Friends of Oskaloosa Golf will have a liquor license for beer and wine and offer “pro-shop and on the deck” food specials.
